Decided after about a week of growth to go hydroponics. Left them in solo cups until first week of June while I designed and rebuilt my entire room. Started with 6 in hydro and 6 in soil. Lost 1 in hydro. Gave 2 away that were in soil. Now have 5 in hydro and 4 in soil.
First time doing hydroponics. I knew water Temps would be an issue, I live in AZ, so I got a chiller for the system. Does a great job of keeping the water temp at 67-69. Totally forgot about the resivor that feeds the control bucket....algae attack like you wouldn't believe. Spent the past few days getting rid of some root rot issues and cleaning the whole thing with Enzyme Komplete and hydrogen peroxide. You don't become an expert if everything goes smoothly. Working through the issues is how it sticks.... I will never make that mistake again lol.
So last week I had some issues with algea. I had designed the perfect setup and had it working perfectly. I added a resivor to top off the control bucket.... But I, stupidly, forgot I need to control the water temperature of both the plant sites with control bucket and the top off resivor. On top of the first week's issue of dirt roots all die and the air roots grow when moving from soil to hydro (which I had to do because going hydroponic was decided after I had started my grow) but my girls were so heavily rooted in soil before I moved them to hydroponics that the soil roots balled up, died, then started to rott. So when I added Enzyme Komplete which breaks down dead matter and helps with root rott. It destroyed all my roots. I was close to pulling everything and just starting all over. But instead I spent all of last weekend cleaning the hydroton, and the roots, and the complete system with diluted hydrogen peroxide and scrubbing, replaced vinyl, air lines, air stones, booted the resivor, and crossed my fingers...i lost the weakest plant within 36 hours. The other 5 had new air roots by Tuesday. I changed the timer to give 6 hours darkness followed by 2 hours light for 3 days. This got the roots expanding exponentially. By Friday the roots were down to the water and the girls are eating, drinking, and enjoying the new sun.
It's been a learning experience but I saved 5 out of 6 plants from certain death, and won my first battle with pythium. 3 weeks after the switch from soil to hydro and everything is finally moving smoothly. Water level dropping, pH is steady but variable at 6.18-5.81 all week. EC is 1.61-1.63 and holding steady.
Week is going smoothly. I'm currently running an experiment between my soil and hydro plants to determin the best ways (for me) to Train. Lst? Hst? Defoliation? I'll post results when I have them. I'll update the week come Sunday with new photos and an update.
Still testing my new, extremely powerful light. Had it on Full Spectrum starting on Monday 7-5, which included UV bars on the light as well, and had it on 80% power from 33 inches away from my tallest plant. Six days later I started to see canoeing on some of the leafs. At first I thought it might be Winburn cuz I had just moved my fan, but even with the band moved it still wasn't enough to make sense to me. So I looked at the plant a little closer and saw some yellow tips and some deformed leafs. I'm pretty sure it was the light being too intense and too close. So I raised my light is high as I can in my tent, and I turned the UB spectrum off, since it's really not needed until end of Bloom anyways, and I lowered the power to 50%. We'll see how this does. I also set up my custom SCROG with about $20 worth of parts from Lowe's. My first time doing SCROG so we'll see how this goes. Well that's pretty much it for the beginning of the week. Have a good grow everyone!
The SCROG is filling in nicely. Last night was the first 12 hour night for these lovely ladies. Over the next 2 weeks I will be managing the stretch, while getting the second layer of the screen built. Smooth week. Doing some research, I think I might switch them to a 36 hour day with the light on for 24hrs and off for 12. I have found some articles that back up this move. If it works I could potentially cut 13 days out of an 8 week flowering. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.
Almost the end of the week. I thought I'd put up a midweek post. First week of flower almost in the books and the stretch has started. Everything is going well so far. Nutes dialed in, plants happy, the green thumb is working its magic.
Well this week was plain Jane. A little nute burn started, you can see it on the tips, but I was purposely giving them high nutrients in order to see what they could handle. The sativa in the middle is stretching hardcore. I'm currently having issues trying to keep my humidity below 55. I can't seem to get it lower than 58. The monsoon season in AZ is temporary though and should rectify itself soon enough.

Everything is ok. Still having issues getting the humidity to stay under 60%. I finally resorted to cutting the larger fan leaves in order to increase air flow. I also put a fan under the plants blowing up. Should be ok from mildew until the buds mature. Hopefully the humidity will drop by then, or, I might end up with some bud rot.
End of week 12, looking good. Stay tuned.
So far so good. Water lines getting clogged a little with roots but I put together a little work arround using the water level indicaters I built into the system. (see picture) They are kind of on auto pilot. At this point in the grow I have learned how this particular batch likes things. For example 1.63 is the optimum EC currently. By monitoring how much the EC increases/decreases vs water level I can tell if they can handle the food level, and adjust accordingly, before they burn. I keep them right at the border of too much nutes. If you look you can see all the tips are just barely burnt. I ride the line.
I'll update again on Sunday with some fun stuff.
Same as always. Monitor my numbers, adjust as needed. Only issue is trying to get light to all the bud locations. Im trying to not remove any leaves but it's kinda impossible. I remove just what I have to and I remove from the top down. If I can push the leaf below the cannopy I do. I have not lost one leaf naturally this whole time. I attribute that to my wonderful new light the Spectrum X from Medic Grow. I researched the crap out of all lights before deciding on this one. It has 2 removable UV/IR bars and as you can see, the girls love it. Go get yours below with my link and get 5% off. By far the best buy I have made for my hydro set up. Go get yours!

Anyway, the girls are getting close. Just a few more weeks and it will be harvest time. Then gonna make some bubble hash and some butter. Gonna be an awesome fall. Shortly after harvest I will be doing another grow from start to finish with a video diary.
The black widow in the back, far left is going through some issues (foxtailing on some of the upper buds). I narrowed it down to either getting thrown back into reveg or to much nitrogen. But I now thing its light stress. I'm still learning the light, as this is my first hydro grow and 1st with this new, powerful light. The light is as high as it can go, so a couple days ago I turned the light down. Then tonight I flushed and set up nutrients for this week, like every Sunday, I changed up the nutes and left out as much nitrogen as I could. I'm pretty sure its light stress though cause the Sunny D in the middle back are starting to bleach.
I guess as this week goes on I will know for sure. By the looks of things I should be starting to take buds of to dry in about 2 more weeks.
Thanks for reading. Now click like on my journal..... Thank you!
Sativa all the way. Fantastic day smoke. Smooth, smells like kool-aid. Green Crack is my strain of choice, has been for years, and will continue to do so.
Everything was great until the great hermaphrodite incident of 21. Don't underestimate the amount of light that can make ur plant grow some balls. Also plants don't have eyes, they feel light wherever it hits them. We have to be in line with our eyes in order to see the light coming in. This means that what we see is just a fraction of what the plant can "see". If you can see any light at all. Hang blackout curtains around the entire tent. For 40 bucks I could have saved 4 months of my time, effort, and money. 😢
