Growing this Roc Bud Inc., ROC’s Auto Mix Freebie No-Till style in the StealthBox! CODA, a small company out of Colorado hand made this air pruning living soil bed to perfectly fit inside of the drip tray and dimensions of the growbox. Their name is CODA on Etsy shop. There is about a 2 in gap around the entire perimeter of the grow bed where the intake vent is located, allowing airflow to pass around the entire bed. There is a drip tray below that holds up to 3L of water so that I can feed from bottom if needed. The bottom of the bed is filled with 2 inches of 3/8in-1in Black & Red Lava Cinders & 3/8in-1in mixed river stones, this helps prevent the bottom of the bed from becoming anaerobic while also allowing the roots to find additional minerals and oxygen. The rock also helps wick extra moisture from the drip pan which maintains steady moisture at the bottom. I filled the bed half way with soil and then laid down a light mid layer of; basalt, dolomite lime, oyster shell & kelp meal before adding in the remaining soil. I topped the bed off with a 1in layer of local vermicompost & Malibu compost. I added a generous amount of cover crop seed plus a light layer of barley mulch, cocoa bean shells, bokashi bran and some decayed wood full of IMO’s from a dense forest nearby. Once the cover started to become more established I put more barley mulch on top to finish the bed and prepare for 🌱. This Auto Mix has received only foliar applications of Fulpower, Agsil16h & Microbes ph corrected to around 5.8-6.2ph. Since the soil is brand new it will need more time to develop before I can stop worrying about ph. For now I will correct foliar applications to 5.8-6.2ph and root drench 6.2-6.4ph. I am using TnB naturals ph adjusters which are naturally derived and safe for the microbial populations. Terp Tea Bloom - Aurora Innovations (Roots Organics)
Terp Tea Bloom 1.302 mll
Top Dressed the bed with 4tbsp of Roots Organics Terp Tea Bloom, 1tbsp Diastatic Malted Barley & 1tbsp Bokashi Bran. I’ve introduced more red light to encourage stretching and have continued to tuck the tops, stems & leaves under the scrog net. I have stopped all foliar treatments and will now use Ful-Power & Agsil16h in root drenches. This will most likely be the last application of Agsil16h as I typically stop feeding silica after the flowering stretch has finished. My other tents with normal pots are dealing with major fungus gnat issues while this guy has almost zero. Anytime I take a closer look at the soil surface I see tons of mites & rove beetles & rove beetle larvae zooming around doing their thing. The no till environment really allows these predators to flourish while conventional style does not support them the same way. My infested pots have rove beetles and mites in them but with them being so small it only encourages conditions for pests to breed and not the beneficials. She grew a significant amount within 7 days. Her Bud structure is pointy and super hairy, almost like some super silver haze buds. I see purple hints throughout her buds so maybe she will be nice and colorful by the time she’s finished? Top dressed with 1/4 cup and watered in around 2tbsp of Montmorillonite, thanks for the advice @deFharo ! 💦🌞👨‍🌾

@deFharo, Awesome! Thank you for the suggestion, your knowledge and advice are always welcome! 🤙😎

@FreshCoastOrganics, me gusta la idea de disolver la montmorillonita en agua y hacer un riego profundo, de esta manera se garantizaría la presencia de la arcilla en todo el sustrato. 👌

@deFharo, I know that’s the only thing I needed that I couldn’t source in time (probably could have but was impatient) I have a compost that is high clay high CEC that I was thinking of making into a tea and feed it to help solve the minimal clay issue.. not to sure if it would help or if it would be better to water in bentonite, montmorillonite, etc?

@FreshCoastOrganics, I like your comment, exactly as you wrote. It is a complicated but beautiful life cycle. We can see that you've done your "homework without cheating". By the way, I am at the stage of working with myclium at this point, I still lack some equipment, e.g. a lab microscope, centrifuge, magnetic mixer, petri dishes etc. This ecosystem is interconnected so much that as you go deeper into it, you discover "magic" in it. For my next journal I will also use plants growing together. I will have a few questions when I start, would you mind if I ask for your advice when I need it ??

@CrazyHorse, Thank you very much! The companion plants have been acting as a “green manure” source but it also acts as a food source for the worms and detritivores living within the soil. I cut the cover crops ever 1.5-2 weeks, beneficial bacteria and mycelium then start to feed and break down the cover crop, then the worms, springtails and mites come to the surface at night to feed on this fungi/bacteria rich organic matter and then bring it back below the mulch surface before sunrise. If I defoliate I chop the leaves and put them back on the soil surface to complete the law of return. By mimicking the food web, these organisms supply the bed with a steady source of plant ready nutrients and minerals. As I continue to use this bed the soil will become richer and more stabilized and will be able to grow with less amendments, nutrients, microbes, etc saving money and time! This is basically regenerative agriculture on a nano scale but the bigger your bed is the better this method gets!

@Hemporio_Afghani, Thanks mate! I couldn’t agree more! I was considering getting a couple bluemat carrots for this bed but have to figure out where I could mount a reservoir…. So hand watering for now but plan to go automatic in the future! Thanks for stopping by growmigo! 🙏😎

@FreshCoastOrganics, it's funny you mention that as a few days ago I ordered some of their soil, grass roots pots & live worms and they also sell ecothrive stuff so I got some of that too😁 I've already got plenty of dry ammendments from livingsoils.co.uk already which are feeding my current plants really well. I find it all alot better than liquid ferts. I'll be watching your grows, they look amazing 😎

Hi, Q: what is the yucca meal? I looked it up and it mentioned cassave. Or Manihot esculenta. Its called yuca in spanish. That Powdered Diastatic Malted Barley has my attention 2!!! 🙏🌿🌿🌿🙏
Organic_LarF
Organic_LarFcommented4 years ago
@FreshCoastOrganics, Thanks, very intresting products. I was aware of the yucca plant, i even have 1, but as i looked up for it, especially with the word meal, it always went back to the cassave. Glad thats sorted out. Its on the list to buy in the future. Thats for sure. Just like the coda bed. Intresting stuff!!! Thanks for being innovative. 🙏🌿🌿🌿🙏

@Organic_LarF, Hey there! It’s actually a meal made from the root of a desert plant called Yucca. It is a common desert plant in Southwestern United States. It can be commonly found under the name “yucca root powder”. It is a natural wetting agent and prevents the soil from becoming hydrophobic while also acting as a food source for microbes, worms, etc. It is high in natural saponins so it can be used watering to help permeability. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yucca https://justingredients.co.uk/products/yucca-root-powder Also, I was able to source the Diastatic Malted Barley from a bread company. Beer companies may also be able to source this as they deal with the companies who supply this product. The powdered barley I found is full of enzymes and it also acts as a food source for the microbes and worms! Anytime I’ve used it the plants perk up like crazy! I initially amended the soil with it but I’ve also been mixing it in with nutrient solutions and teas, it incorporates nicely and doesn’t get clumpy. I’ve been using about 1/4-1tsp per 4L of water.
