Germinated in between 2 cotton pads, sprayed with water. Put in a bowl and covered with cling film. Put in a dark drawer 23C and 70.6% RH.
29 Aug: Started germination process for Wanda.
31 Aug: Wanda sprouted. Tap root is 1cm long and hairy already.
1 Sep: Planted Wanda.
Second set of seeds from my first grow are 'Wanda' White Widow and 'Orla' Orange Bud. 'Wendy' White Widow and 'Ophelia' Orange Bud are my first set of seeds and are 2 weeks ahead as I could only fit two pots in the grow tent. See separate diaries for the other plants.
Starting the seeds off in a grow tent indoors until they hit vegetation phase, when I will move them to the greenhouse. I have a bluetooth thermostat that connects to an app so I can check the temp and humidity remotely. There is also an alert feature where you can set a temperature range and it notifies you if it goes higher or lower than this.
Using the Darmai 40w light in the grow tent on a 20/4 light schedule, set to blue spectrum.
Water is PH 7.5, 220 ppm and temperature 22C when watering. Only watering around the seedling.
Soil was PH 6.5 at time of planting and is now averaging 7.0 PH.
No nutrients added this week as there are enough in the soil to last the first 2 weeks.
1 Sep: Planted in a 20L airpot with Biobizz light mix soil. Watered plant sparingly around the seedling.
2 Sep: Wanda broke through the surface of the soil. Watered plant sparingly around the seedling.
3 Sep: DISASTER - she is completely bent over and looking pretty dire. I've noticed that this second set of plants (Wanda and Orla) are using much more water than the first set (Ophelia and Wendy). I am putting this down to the fact that I prepared all the pots at the same time from a new bag of Biobizz light mix. Whilst I planted Ophelia and Wendy straight away into those pots, I left the other two pots in the greenhouse ready to plant Wanda and Orla when ready. I can only assume the soil lost a lot of moisture over this 10 day period and whilst I was watering in the same capacity as the first set of plants, this wasn't enough. I've been watering pretty much every day since planting, versus every 2-3 days with the first set. I gave her some water straight away and she picked up and was standing straight by the end of the day.
4 Sep: She has picked back up again and looking OK.
7 Sep: End of week 1 and around 5 cm high. Today the temperatures hit 28C and the temperature in the loft (where the grow tent is placed) soared. I have a fan in the grow tent but it was just circulating warm air and I was unable to get the temperature down. Therefore I took her outside to take advantage of the sunshine and a light breeze. She is definitely smaller than her sister 'Wendy' White Widow was at one week old, but I am putting this down to stunted growth due to underwatering. I am just hoping that it won't effect her too much overall.
8 Sep (day 8): Start of week 2. Still looking small due to stunted growth from underwatering 😢 I'm hoping this won't effect the growth or cause too much of a delay, but I am conscious she is an Auto and I don't have the option of extending the Veg phase until she is the right size for flowering.
9 Sep (day 9): She’s looking good today, getting taller and greener. I’ve moved Wanda and Orla out to the greenhouse to join their sisters today. I’m going away for the weekend and the greenhouse is more self sufficient than the grow tent. My main worry is keeping the humidity high enough, as the dehumidifier will stop it getting too high, but won’t stop it getting too low. I’m anxious to leave them of course, but not much I can do. If they do well in the greenhouse this weekend, I will probably keep them out there rather than put them back in the tent. Keep your fingers crossed for them please folks 🤞🏻
10 Sep (day 10): She seems to have been fine in the greenhouse overnight, so I am feeling a bit more comfortable to her for the weekend. She was dry on top, so gave her a little plain water to see her through the weekend.
11 Sep (day 11): Am away for the weekend. Hoping the girls are doing ok 😰
Sep 12 (day 12): Back home now and the girls survived without me for a couple of days…PHEW! Some nice growth too, but she is looking a little yellow on top?! Maybe I am being paranoid, will keep an eye on her nonetheless and turn the light power down 5%. Gave her some plain water.
Sep 13 (day 13): More growth and looking ok, but a bit spindly. I’ve had the fan on her gently to try and strengthen the stem, but she still looks very fragile. Also worried about her colouring which looks a little yellow and blotchy in places. Hoping it’s not Mosaic Virus, but going to post a question just in case 😰 By now you will have realised I’m a total Mama Bear Worry Wort when it comes to things I care about!
Sep 14 (day 14): End of week 2 and she is growing but still looking yellower than I would like. Community answers to the questions suggested adding Calmag, but as she is 2 weeks tomorrow and the nutrients last in the soil for 2 weeks, I will do this tomorrow. When I went into the greenhouse today the humidity was at 85% because the tank on the dehumidifier was full. I emptied it and set it off again.
NOTE: Nutrient amount is the total amount of nutes given during the week.
Sep 15 (day 15): Start of week 3. She is definitely growing, but I am still worried about the amount of yellowing. As it is now the start of week 3 I can add some nutrients safely without overloading her as the soil has enough nutrients for the first 2 weeks. Fed her BioBizz nutrient schedule week 1 at 1/4 of the recommended dose. I also gave a slightly higher dose of Calmag as suggested by the community - 0.4ml/L which is 1/2 of the recommended deficiency correction dose. Bought some Leaf Coat from BioBizz to try and protect the plants, especially as Wendy had some white spots on one of her leaves. Also bought some odour remover as I am getting a weak scent now from Wendy and Ophelia. When I went into the greenhouse this morning the dehumidifier was full again and the humidity too high. I am going to need to set the drainage hose up so that the water drains out rather than goes into the tank. If its filling up this quickly overnight, I am not going to be able to empty it as soon as it gets full and the humidity will need to be even more controlled during flowering phase. I will try and do that later today.
Sep 16 (day 16): Bit of growth overnight and she is looking a bit greener and less yellow, although I could easily be imagining this via hopeful thinking! I fixed the pipe outlet to the dehumidifier yesterday and this seems to have stopped the tank filling up as the humidity was a solid 65% when I went in this morning. Odour remover is doing its job.
Sep 17 (day 17): Bit more growth overnight and she is looking OK. Leaves still seem to have that mottled look and I am still worried it might be TMV. I am going to see what the new leaves look like when they grow and see if they have the same appearance. I also need to give the Calmag and other nutes a chance to work because apparently it takes 2-3 days for them to take effect when you are using organics. Hoping to see her looking healthy by Sunday...
Sep 18 (day 18): Very noticeable growth overnight and the new fan leaves are much bigger. Whilst the current leaves don’t look too great, I’m hoping the new leaves will be free of issues and signify she is healthy overall. Fed her 0.5L of water with BioBizz week 1 nutes at 1/2 dose.
Sep 19 (day 19): More good growth overnight and new leaves still looking healthy. Keeping fingers crossed that we are on the right track now.
Sep 20 (day 20): Wow, she seems much taller this morning! I turned the grow light off to take photos yesterday and forgot to turn it back on again like an idiot 🙈 She had indirect light from Ophelia and Wendy’s one and doesn’t seem impacted, but I’m hoping she isn’t taller due to stretching?! Ugh, the stress! New leaves are looking healthy still, so I am hoping she’s over the worst…for now!
Sep 21 (day 21): End of week 3 and looking much healthier. Leaves are growing FAST and looking healthy, so I am confident that the nutes have got her back on track and she is making up for lost time.
NOTE: Nutrient amount is the total amount of nutes given during the week.
Sep 22 (day 22): Start of Week 4. Good growth again and some nice new leaves. Watered her with 1L and week 2 of the BioBizz note schedule at 1/2 strength. Bought a new watering can as I had lost the rose attachment for my old one. I wanted to try and ensure she gets an even distribution of water, which seems to have worked.
Sep 23 (day 33): More growth overnight, but not as much as yesterday. Still looking healthy with nice green new leaves.
Sep 24 (day 24): Looking bigger today again and hopefully making up for lost time. She’s looking nice and green and healthy on top.
Sep 25 (day 25): Still looking healthy and green, more growth again.
Sep 26 (day 26): Still looking good this morning and more growth again. I emailed Biobizz to ask when I should start on the bloom schedule as Ophelia is on her way into pre-flower. They said I could start at the first signs of flowering. They also said, that I don't need to halve my doses for auto flowers! The only exception is to feed 1ml of Bio Grow per litre maximum. Very interesting. So I have upped the nutes as per their guidance. So I watered her today with 1L and Week 2 of the nute schedule at a full dose. Interested to see if it makes any difference, but not sure she could be growing any quicker!
Sep 27 (day 27): More growth and looking healthy. Leaves are looking nice and big and green.
Sep 28 (day 28): End of week 4 and looking on the right track I think, nice and healthy.
NOTE: Nutrient amount is the total amount of nutes given during the week.
Sep 29 (day 29): Start of week 5 and looking much taller! Still healthy, new growth on some nodes.
Sep 30 (day 30): Growth overnight, getting taller with fuller leaves and node growth is getting bigger. Struggling to know when to water. I used to water twice a week, but the pot doesn't feel light enough yet so I am paranoid of over watering. She is dry on top, but I used the water meter and if I push it all the way to the bottom of the pot it reads 'wet'. Everywhere else reads 'nor' or 'dry'. She isn't showing any signs of dehydration, so I will be cautious and not water.
Oct 1 (day 31): All looks good apart from some growth on the very bottom nodes which has yellowing leaf ends. I'm not sure what it could be as everywhere else looks so healthy with none of the same symptoms. I'm going to assume its where she was watered and the leaves were wet and perhaps burnt when drying. Will look into it either way.
Oct 2 (day 32): Fed her with week 2 of the nutrient schedule at full dosage. As she has gone a week without water and seemed fine, I am upping the water to 2 litres.
Oct 3 (day 33): Looking good and huge growth overnight height wise. I wanted to leave one of my four plants without LST so I could do a yield comparison at the end. However, I think I need to rethink this strategy as she shares a light with Orla who is now much shorter after LST. The light height will become a problem now, because she is so much taller without the LST. Will have to LST her tomorrow I think, otherwise the light will become too much of a problem.
Oct 4 (day 34): Started LST which went well. Hopefully it will work well. I measured her before I started and she is now 16 inches tall! So much growth height wise. Gave her a fish mix foliar spray.
Oct 5 (day 35): End of week 5 and all in all a good week. Lots of growth height wise and on the new nodes and branches. Leaves looking big and healthy. She seemed to respond well to the first LST and is pointing upwards.
NOTE: Nutrient amount is the total amount of nutes given during the week.
Oct 6 (day 36): Start of week 6. Still doing well post first round of LST. More growth in all places and looking a nice colour and healthy.
Oct 7 (day 37): Whoa, looks like she is going into pre-flower?! Orla and Wanda are 10 days younger than Ophelia and Wendy and they were much bigger when they went into pre-flower. Not only that but they had a tough start as seedlings and I thought it would stunt their growth. Well at least I will have a different experience with these plants as they are a totally different shape and have way less branches currently 🤔
Oct 8 (day 38): All good today and definitely in pre-flower! Did some more LST to even put the canopy and get some light to the lower branches and nodes. Fed her with week 2 of the nute schedule and 2L of water. Feels a bit early to start the bloom nutes. Thought I would use the fish mix foliar spray I created earlier in the week. BIG MISTAKE - it absolutely STANK!! Note to self: when using fish mix foliar spray, throw it away after usage and mix a fresh one each time. Nausea level: 8/10. 😷
Oct 9 (day 39): Looking good and responded well to yesterday’s LST and feed (including the rotten fish mix 🤢).
Oct 10 (day 40): Looking good and healthy still. Lots of growth and flowers beginning to appear. She’s grown SO much since the beginning of this week, I can’t believe it. Can’t believe she was the runt of the litter!
Oct 11 (day 41): Whilst mixing up the feed tonight my PH meter read 1.5!? PH has consistently been 6.5 - 7.0 once I added nutes so this was very weird. Mixed up the calibration sachets and it was still off so I can only assume it’s broken. FFS 🤬 Bombed it down to my local grow shop and got a replacement 60 seconds before they shut. I went for a Blue Meter this time, given my cheap one from Amazon died at the most inappropriate time! Even so, it’s bloody expensive 🤯 Waterproof though, so hopefully won’t suffer the same fate as the last one. Once back up and running, I watered her with week 3 of the nute schedule and 2L of water. Feels safe to start bloom nutes now. Sprayed her with a foliar fish mix spray and remembered to throw the remainder of the fish mix spray away this time to avoid having to fumigate the greenhouse again after the last incident 😰🤢 Did a bit of LST for good measure to try and even the canopy.
Oct 12 (day 42): End of week 6. Seems to have responded to the LST, feed and foliar spray well. Looking very healthy and pointing upwards again. Growing like crazy!
NOTE: Nutrient amount is the total amount of nutes given during the week.
Oct 13 (day 43): Start of week 7. Looking good and main cola flower is becoming more prominent. Other flowers are also growing well and the canopy is looking pretty even from the last round of LST. Gave her 500ml of water rather than nutes today, as she was only fed 2 days ago.
Oct 14 (day 44): Looking good, nice colour. Healthy and onset of stretching is about to start I think. Moved the lamp up a couple of inches as Orla (who she shares a lamp with) was showing very slight signs of heat stress. Makes sense as they are growing taller and closing the distance to the lamp.
Oct 15 (day 45): Looking healthy and growing well. Fed with 2L of water and week 3 of the nute schedule.
Oct 16 (day 46): All good, more flowers appearing.
Oct 17 (day 47): The canopy is getting pretty uneven with some prominent flowers getting much bigger. Did some gentle LST to even things out. Fed with 2L of water and week 4 of the nute schedule. Checked in on her this evening and she has responded well to the LST already and pointing upwards again.
Oct 18 (day 48): Continued to respond well to the LST. Flower sites are getting bigger now and some new ones on the way. Stretching is still occurring on some of the newer branches.
Oct 19 (day 49): End of week 7. The main cola has stretched up a lot, so just adjusted the LST on that one branch to get it lower. Rest of the canopy is looking nice and even. All in all, a good week.
NOTE: Nutrient amount is the total amount of nutes given during the week.
Oct 20 (day 50): Start of week 8. Still looking good and healthy. Lots of growth happening. Current flower sites are getting bigger, new ones are forming and the branches are stretching. Canopy is still nice and even.
Oct 21 (day 51): All good and growing well.
Oct 22 (day 52): All good. Fed with 2L of water and week 4 of the nute schedule. Wendy was showing (what I think) is a Calcium deficiency, so have added Calmag back in using the preventative dosage on the nute schedule.
Oct 23 (day 53): All good. Flowers getting bigger, including the newer ones and all the surrounding foliage is filling out. She's looking 'fuller' 😍
Oct 24 (day 54): All good. Canopy is starting to look uneven again. I’m trying to rotate the plants to boost lower branches via the hottest part of the light, rather than LST. Will decide tomorrow if I need to adjust the LST again. It's getting dark earlier now, so I have dropped the light schedule to 18/24 from 20/24. I have read that this can benefit bud development too, so will see how this goes. Main rationale for dropping the light schedule is to keep the greenhouse as inconspicuous as possible. So the lights go out when it gets dark and then come on again at midnight.
Oct 25 (day 55): All good. Fed with 2L of water and week 5 of the nute schedule. Have now swapped the Fish Mix over for the BioGrow as they only recommend giving Fish Mix up until the second week of flowering. I thought Wendy had a nitrogen deficiency after switching over to the BioGrow, so I decided to keep the Fish Mix (and extra nitrogen) going as long as possible. No Calmag today as only giving it once a week at the preventative dose.
Oct 26 (day 56): End of week 8. Bit of LST to try and structure all the new growth. Very good week and she is growing and flowering really well.
NOTE: Nutrient amount is the total amount of nutes given during the week.
Oct 27 (day 57): Start of week 9. She's still looking good. She and Orla are looking so much bigger than their sisters Ophelia and Wendy. Obviously I am further along the process and know a bit more now, but I think the main reason is the LST. I did it as early as possible on the others as I'd read to start as early as possible in Veg. Both of them are short stocky plants, whereas I waited a bit longer for these two and only did the LST when they had prominent branches to pin. The result is that both these girls are much taller and better formed.
Oct 28 (day 58): Fed with 2L of water and week 5 of the nute schedule, microbes and Calmag. Flowers really are huge on her and nice white pisitils. Starting to see the formation of proper colas as the flowers group together.
Oct 29 (day 59): Looking nice and healthy still today.
Oct 30 (day 60): She's really growing fast. Still stretching and the flowers are continuing to flourish.
Oct 31 (day 61): Fed with 2L of water and week 6 of the nute schedule. Happy Halloween! 👻
Nov 1 (day 62): Ordered a jewellers loupe as I hear thats what most people use to inspect trichomes. Cant wait for it to arrive so I can take a look at her sisters more closely. She's just beginning to get trichomes now and will be too early to check them for harvest signs. Pistils are starting to go amber, but I refuse to panic about it this time. Her sisters pistils went amber quite early too, but they seem to be doing ok. I must admit though, hers have stayed white for longer 😶I continue to rotate the plant to put the lower flowers under the hottest part of the light to aid growth.
Nov 2 (day 63): End of week 9. Noticed a couple of issues today. Some tiny leaves have shrivelled up completely at the bottom of the plant. There is also a drooping green leaf and another which is very yellow and looking like its on deaths door. I'm not sure what its causing it yet (as it could be a whole myriad of things), so played it safe and fed them all with 1L of plain water today. The greenhouse is consistently warm, but with the humidity dropping the girls are getting thirsty quicker, so I don't want to overdo the nutes. Jewellers loupe arrived. What a disappointment! Its a standard one, but they are so small and you have to get so close to the plant to magnify them that the slightest shake of the hand or gust from the fan makes it impossible!!! Can see jack shit clearly and got a face full of resin for the privilege. Going to do some research on other alternatives! Annoyance level 8/10 😤
NOTE: Nutrient amount is the total amount of nutes given during the week.
Nov 3 (day 64): Start of week 10. Thanks to Amazon next day delivery, I now have a handheld pocket microscope device which was recommended on a few sites. It has a built in LED light and is longer than the jewellers loupe, so at least you don't need to get quite as close! Still suffer from the shaky hand and fan issues as you have to stay super still to get a good position and view of the bud. Don't have any trichomes to view on her yet though.
Nov 4 (day 65): Something is badly wrong 😱😱😱 The issues I found with a few leaves 2 days ago seems to have been just the beginning! Now there are lots of yellowing patchy leaves that fall off as soon as you touch them and some other green leaves warping into weird shapes! What the hell is causing her leaves to look like that?!? As always, her sister Orla is fairing much better. I noticed the same with Ophelia and Wendy - Ophelia the other Orange Bud, is so much hardier than her sister Wendy the White Widow. Perhaps its the strain and White Widows are just fussier?! I don't know what to do for the best, so I am just going to carry on regardless and see what happens. Fed with 2L of water and week 6 of the nute schedule, microbes and Calmag. Stress Level: 9/10 😖
Nov 5 (day 66): She is looking even worse today 😰😢 Yellowing leaves which are crisping up and continuing to fall off. One of them has mould on the back!? Surely it cant be powdery mildew?! None of the other plants are showing these signs, so it seems odd to just get it on only one leaf?! I have hit the research and I am struggling to determine what the issue is. Yellow leaves are a sign of nitrogen deficiency, but I don't understand why that would be happening 4 weeks into the flowering period?! Could be a calmag deficiency, but would that really cause those weird warped leaves?! The only thing that makes sense at the moment is cold shock, as I have done a couple of waterings outside of the greenhouse. Basically, its really difficult to water airpots unless you water really slowly, as it all comes out of the side holes. So you have to water in the middle of the pot and very slowly. If I feed all 4 plants in the same period, it takes 30-40 minutes. Another aspect is that I have tried different ways of watering before. If I water too quickly or with the watering can shower head, a lot of water comes out of the sides of the pot. This is good in the long run as the plants won't get waterlogged, but all the excess water on the floor of the greenhouse spikes the humidity levels by at least 10%! As I don't want bud rot, I don't want that excess water causing issues. So I tried taking the plants out of the greenhouse and watering them there, so any excess water isn't inside the greenhouse. This makes watering much quicker, but does expose them to a blast of cold air and its now getting really cold outside. 5C or so in the evenings when I am finished with work. Looking at the symptoms of cold shock, they do seem to fit the bill. No more watering the plants outside! Hopefully she will recover. I am going to remove the yellowing leaves and hope for the best. Stress Level: 10/10 😵
Nov 6 (day 67): She's looking a bit better today so lets hope she is on the mend! Thirsty AGAIN...I even checked with the moisture probe and she is dry all over the pot. Fed with 2L of water and week 7 of the nute schedule. Fed her INSIDE the greenhouse where its warm this time!
Nov 7 (day 68): Still looking ok but not perky enough for my liking. Maybe she is just recovering...? Why didn't somebody warn me that this whole experience would be a total head fuck of confusion!?
Nov 8 (day 69): She's looking really sorry for herself again and her leaves are drooping badly. She also has yellow edging around a couple of leaves which look typical of nute burn. I've read so many articles that say its REALLY difficult to get nute burn with organic growing, so I don't understand what's going on. Maybe it is a Calmag issue like Wendy had after all? I did cut the Calmag out for a few weeks on the advice of BioBizz. Confusion Level: 10/10 😶
Nov 9 (day 70): End of week 10. I started a 'flush lite' on her sister Ophelia yesterday and I noticed she's looking good today and has a number of leaves praying upwards. Makes me wonder if the 2 litres I've been feeding them wasn't enough and if I should have watered until run off each time. As I have said previously, I have had lots of issues getting watering logistics correct within the greenhouse. I bought a huge tray to capture excess water from the flush and this worked well. Ahem - until I couldn't lift the tray full of water out of the greenhouse without spilling it all over myself and the floor that is. Humidity spiked 10% FFS. The joys of greenhouse growing eh 😰 I decided to give it a try and gave her 5L of water tonight rather than a feed and will see how she looks tomorrow. I also decided to give her a little trim, so I cut away a couple of old fan leaves and also a lot of new growth on the stem. I felt it would be best to trim them off and allow all her energy to focus on the existing buds. Worst week yet...stress, confusion, despair.....need I go on!? 😓
NOTE: Nutrient amount is the total amount of nutes given during the week.
Nov 10 (day 71): Start of week 11. She's looking a bit better today. Still hydrated from the larger watering yesterday and has perked up a little bit. Some of the taller buds still have leaves sagging, but the lower leaves look a bit better. She also seems fine after yesterdays trim. I decided to call upon Amazon for another gadget and order a handheld microscope that connects to your phone wirelessly. The pocket microscope is way better than the jewellers loupe, but still requires a steady hand and a face full of resin 😷 This way I can take pictures of the trichomes too 😍 She doesn't have many trichomes yet and the leaves are still mainly clear. Will take some photos once I see some appear.
Nov 11 (day 72): Looking good and still hydrated, so no more water required as of yet. The leaves on the taller colas are no longer sagging and are pointing outwards. In hindsight I now know that is a definite sign of underwatering and will be able to look out for this sign in the future! I think there are SO many warnings out there about overwatering that I have under compensated. I will definitely be learning from this and will continue to water at the increased levels. However, I don't want to over compensate now and will try and continue to water only when she is dry and the plant is light. I think tomorrow she will be ready. I've ordered a giant syringe to collect the excess water in the tray to save myself further soakings, spillage and humidity spikes 😠 I need to get my act together and sort out where I am going to dry my other 2 plants, Ophelia and Wendy who are 10 days ahead of Orla and Wanda. Obviously it cant be in the greenhouse with the other plants, but where?! I still have the small grow tent where they started life, so that seems the most obvious choice. However, the heater and the de-humidifier are both in use in the greenhouse and cant be moved yet, which means more expense if I have to buy additional ones. I have put the second thermostat in the tent so I can see the current temperatures in there and it ranges from 17-20 degrees. This might end up being ok, but average humidity is 47% and when I add the branches it will no doubt shoot up. I am going to need another de-humidifier at least. I'm also worried about the smell if its moving back into the house, so would possibly need an extraction kit - more expense 😤 I may try without it first and if it gets too stinky, add the extraction kit then. My daughter has told me that if her room starts to smell of weed, she will NOT be happy. Ahem. Bad Mummy 😳Also read yesterday that some random snow may be arriving in a weeks time which has worried me! I hope the greenhouse will be able to maintain its temperature also. UGH bloody weather - its almost as unpredictable as my plants 😂😂
Nov 12 (day 73): Fed with 6L of water and week 7 of the nute schedule, microbes and Calmag. Tried out my new giant syringe, which holds 1/2 a litre. It allowed me to suck up the water from the large tray and squirt it out of the greenhouse door 💦 I also wasn’t drenched and the humidity is now coming back down to 40% finally! Got a plan for drying now and will be clearing a space in the cellar tomorrow to house a bigger tent with extraction kit.
Nov 13 (day 74): She's looking good again today and definitely benefitting from the extra water. I really should have been giving more sooner, but I'd read that 10% of the pot size was sufficient. Since then, I have seen articles saying it should be 20-35% of the pot size 😫 I’ve been clearing the cellar out today. Can’t believe how much crap we had down there, but I’ve cleared a nice big space for my new kit. It’s so dusty and musty down there, but it’s had a fair old clean where possible. My back is bloody aching, I will tell you that much. Went down the grow shop and was there for a good while getting all my new kit. So, after much hullabaloo we managed to get all the kit into my 2 seater car 🙈 I will likely do my next grow down there as it’s going to start costing a fortune to keep the greenhouse warm when it gets even colder. She’ll be back in business next spring!
Nov 14 (day 75): So its D day for her sisters Ophelia and Wendy today and I will be chopping them down and doing a wet trim. I feel quite emotional, but that has been offset by exhaustion! I've spent the whole weekend clearing out, organising and cleaning (within reason) my cellar. I have also set up my new tent and equipment for drying. It worked out cheaper in the end to buy a kit, as the items individually cost almost as much as the kit and I got a Spider Farmer 400W light included 😍 which I can use for my next grow. Equipment included in the kit is as follows: Grow Tent 120 x 120 x 180, Spider Farmer SF4000 450w LED Dimmable Light, Heavy Duty Timer, Pair of Rope Ratchets, Clip Fan, Digital Min-Max Thermometer/Hygrometer, 4 Quick Release Clamps, 6” Acoustic Ducting (5m Length), Rhino 6" EC Fan (594m3/h), Rhino Pro Carbon Filter 6" 300 (600m3/h), 6" Padded Clamp. I also added: Oil Filled Radiator, Inkbird Temperature Controller, Electriq 12L dehumidifier, Trim Bin and a LightHouse Round DryNet - 75cm (30"). I started putting up the tent and realised it was too tall and I had accidentally been given the 120 x 120 x 200 one 😫 I would have kept it, but it was too tall and wouldn't fit, so I had to go back to the grow shop for them to swap it for the 180 high tent. Got that up and then started on the extraction kit. Watched some YouTube videos on how to put it together and realised the grow shop had also accidentally forgotten to give me the padded clamp 😒 I gave them a call and this time they had someone drop it round for me. All in all, they have been great so I didn't kick up a fuss and I am really relieved they are open on a Sunday!!! However, I did lose a couple of hours with the setup. Finally got the extraction kit up, which wasn't easy to do on my own, but I managed 💪 I now have a complete set-up inside the house to do a grow for a comparison against the greenhouse and will definitely work better for the winter and spring when its cold. It also means that both Orla and Wanda are now alone in the greenhouse and have a light each. Exhaustion Level: 10/10 😴
Nov 15 (day 76): Looking good today. More room in the greenhouse and a light to herself which will hopefully allow her to fatten her buds nicely before harvest.
Nov 16 (day 77): End of week 11. Looking really good and definite fattening of colas in the last 24 hours. Finally seeing some resin building up on some of the buds, so took my first pictures of her trichomes which are clear as expected. Fed with 6L of water and week 8 of the nute schedule.
NOTE: Nutrient amount is the total amount of nutes given during the week.
Nov 17 (day 78): Start of week 12. Looking much better and healthy, fattening buds with more trichomes and resin. I was watching a YouTube video last night which was talking about how much to water your plants. They mentioned that if you don't water enough, then the plants can get nute burn because they cant absorb the nutrients as they are too dry. So I think all the issues I went through a couple of weeks back were all down to underwatering and they caused nute burn as well. I will never know for sure, but I am pretty sure thats the mystery solved and lesson well and truly learned!
Nov 18 (day 79): All looking good. Humidity is keeping within the right range now that I am using the syringe to remove excess water from the tray and not spilling it in the greenhouse 😂
Nov 19 (day 80): Looking good and healthy.
Nov 20 (day 81): Still looking very well and continuing to fatten up her buds. Took more photos with the microscope. First signs of some trichomes beginning to transition to cloudy on the bigger buds, but majority fully clear. Have decided to feed 1L less as I am getting about 1.5L run off in the tray. Fed with 5L of water and week 8 of the nute schedule, microbes and Calmag. Got less run off, around 0.5L.
Nov 21 (day 82): Looking good and healthy.
Nov 22 (day 83): I have now finished drying Ophelia and Wendy, so I am moving Orla and Wanda into the grow tent indoors. It's beginning to get very smelly in the greenhouse with just the two plants and I am nearly out of my second tub of odour control gel. To save buying more, I may as well move them into my new tent with the extractor fan. Also means I can try out my new Spider Farmer 400W light for the last few weeks and see if I can get those buds any fatter 😍 Its also getting really cold and snow is forecast. Temperatures are dropping to below freezing now and the heater is having to work really hard to keep the temperature at 22C even though I have the thermostat set to 24C. Will also save me going out to the greenhouse in freezing temperatures and just down into the cellar instead. She's looking good today, so let's hope the last few weeks in the tent continue to keep her that way.
Nov 23 (day 84): End of week 12. Wow its pretty hot in the tent with that new light! Damn, its hitting 29-30C when the light is on. I have a mini fan in the tent and have now added a tower fan as well, so will see if that makes a difference. All in all a good week and lots of bud growth.
NOTE: Nutrient amount is the total amount of nutes given during the week.
Nov 24 (day 85): Start of week 13. Brought her up to the sink for her watering today, which is much easier than messing around in the greenhouse with syringes. Bringing her upstairs from the cellar isn't an issue as the pot is light at this point. Fed with 5L of water and week 9 of the nute schedule. Turned my back for a second and found my cat chewing on her leaves 😱😰😻 She was clearly fascinated by the scent. Maybe she thought this was a huge catnip plant just for her! Bloody hell, lets hope it doesn't affect her in any way. She didn't ingest any of the leaves, so hopefully just a taste 🙀 It's much harder taking her back down to the cellar when the pot is full and heavy and I managed to soak myself via the airpot holes 😭 Seems that I am destined to get regular soakings via this growing process!
Nov 25 (day 86): Looking good today, buds are continuing to fatten. Its still very hot in this tent with the new 400w light and is reaching 30C 😰 I am having to routinely try and open the tent door to let the temperature drop down to 24C and then close it back up again.
Nov 26 (day 87): Looking good, but the heat is still a problem. Keeping an eye on the pot weight in case she needs watering more often, but she seems ok and not in need of water yet.
Nov 27 (day 88): All good and despite the heat, she's not in need of water as the pot doesn't feel completely light yet.
Nov 28 (day 89): She's really packing on the weight now and the buds are continuing to fatten right up! I'm also getting a lot of new white pistils coming out which is a new experience. With my other plants Ophelia and Wendy, the pistils went orange and stayed that way. Mind you, this whole experience has been different with these two plants. I did the LST when they were bigger and they are a completely different shape. They have grown SOOOOOOO much bigger than the others. Even though the other plants were 10 days ahead, I learnt from my mistakes and applied them to these plants and the difference has been HUGE. Got a load of pictures of the trichomes. I normally try and take a close up picture of each bud, which is why there are so many. This also lets me compare the trichome colouring overall. Trichomes are around 50% Cloudy, 50% Clear now I think and still only a few ambers. Still a way to go I think, so will just keep going until I think I need to start flushing. Fed with 5L of water, week 9 of the nute schedule, microbes and calmag. Of course my nosy cat came along and tried to EAT HER AGAIN 😼😰😡
Nov 29 (day 90): Getting annoyed with this heat issue now. I really don't want to turn the light down but it is throwing out SO much heat. I am also getting fed up of having to keep going down to the cellar and open the tent door to drop the heat from 30C and the leaves on the girls are turning upwards at the sides which is a sign of heat stress too. I rang up my pal at the grow shop for some advice and he suggested that I need to move the ducting from the extractor further away from the tent. Essentially, the heat from the ducting (which is on top of the tent) is then cooking the tent from the outside in 😫 He also suggested that my humidity is too low at 38% (even though thats what I had read on the RQS site) and that it should be higher for the girls to thrive. Guess I have been worrying about bud rot a bit TOO much 😱 I went down and set the dehumidifier up to 50% and moved the ducting as far away from the tent as possible. Let's see if things improve.
Nov 30 (day 91): End of week 13. Yep, heating issue is much better. Humidity isn't rising as quickly as I want, but the max temperature is now at 26C which is much better. When the light goes off, its cooler in the tent in the dark too, so I'm getting more of a night and day temperature which I didn't get in the greenhouse as the heater was keeping the temperature constant. All in all a good week despite the heat issues. Lots of weight going onto the buds and the plants look much more like the ones I see in other peoples diaries 😊
NOTE: Nutrient amount is the total amount of nutes given during the week.
Dec 1 (day 92): Start of week 14. Looking good, buds are getting HUGE now. Am going to start flushing her sister Orla today, but Wanda has so many white pistils, it just doesn't feel right to start yet. Dutch Passion said that the plant is ready to harvest when all the pistils are orange and they are mostly white at the moment. I will just have to keep an eye on the trichomes instead for now. As always the different buds are at different stages. They look 50% Cloudy, 50% Clear at this stage to me. High temperatures in the tent seem to have stabilised since last week and moving the extraction duct end to the other side of the room. Fed with 5L of water, week 10 of the nute schedule, microbes and calmag.
Dec 2 (day 93): All good, still fattening up nicely.
Dec 3 (day 94): Looking fine still. Not quite ready for a watering yet, but will need one tomorrow I think.
Dec 4 (day 95): Brought her up from the cellar for her watering and some of the leaves are beginning to yellow now. Looking at the trichomes, I would say its up to 80% Cloudy, 20% Clear now and a couple of ambers beginning to show up. I am going to start her flush. Gave her 9L of PH balanced water (at 6.5 PH).
Dec 5 (day 96): All good, still fattening up nicely.
Dec 6 (day 97): All good, leaves starting to yellow even more since starting the flush. Colas are getting seriously big and fat. I cant believe how much bigger she is than her sister Wendy. I know she had a calmag deficiency and everything, but SERIOUSLY the difference is HUGE!
Dec 7 (day 98): End of week 14. Looking great and still not ready for another flush yet, but will need watering tomorrow I think. Have an explosion of new white pistils on her! Cant believe she is still growing at this stage?! I guess now I have started the flush, I can keep an eye on her and harvest when I have more orange pistils, no clear trichomes and a small percentage of amber. I want them to be mainly cloudy so the THC is at a maximum. Very exciting 😀
NOTE: Nutrient amount is the total amount of nutes given during the week.
Anybody know what this is at the top of my bud?! Looks like a flower?! Got so many new white pistils all over which is surprising this late into flower?! Is this why she is called white widow? 🤔
Dec 8 (day 99): Start of week 15. Looking huge but have had an explosion of white pistils all over the buds. Some articles say this is normal, some say it may be normal for the strain and some say its too much heat/light. As always its difficult to know which it is, but reading articles on 'fox tailing' (which I think is too much heat/light at late flowering stage), it says that the white pistils are OK if they are all over the buds, rather than in one area (which they are). I also found some white clusters that look like little flowers on the top of two buds, so I asked a grow question. Looks like bud bleaching from the answer I got from the question. Wanda is a bit taller than Orla and the two buds with bleaching are the highest and closest to the light, so this makes sense. I've raised the light a few inches higher and turned it down to 80%. This has also dropped the temperature in the tent to 24C, so hopefully all good. I think they will still get enough light at this stage, but I've still only been using my 400W light for a few weeks and getting used to the levels. I am going to go by the trichomes rather than the pistils which are looking mostly cloudy. More ambers, but probably 5% overall at a guess? Will give it to the end of the week and check at her next watering. Continuing with the flush, so gave 9L of PH balanced water.
Dec 9 (day 100): All good. I've been reading up on her strain on the Dutch Passion website. Looks like the white pistils are native to the strain as it says the buds are white. There was also a picture on the site of some buds at harvest point and they looked just like mine, covered in white pistils...PHEW!
Dec 10 (day 101): All good, no water required yet and pot is still heavy. Checked trichomes and they are still ok to go a few more days I'd say. More amber trichomes appearing, but still not masses overall so will wait a little longer.
Dec 11 (day 102): All good, still doesn't need water yet.
Dec 12 (day 103): Needs watering today. Took her sister Orla up for watering and checked her trichomes. She's ready for harvest and I don't want to let her go any longer. I would say she is 20%+ amber trichomes now. Harvest and wet trim took 3 bloody hours 😵 Didn't want to be there for another 3 hours with Wanda, so will harvest her tomorrow. Didn't bother watering her, but have kept the light off as Orla is now in the net drying in the same tent.
Dec 13 (day 104): Harvest day!!! Cut her branches down and put them in the trim bin. She is so different to Wendy, in that she just has lots of big colas so it was really easy to just trim those down. The wet trim took 2 bloody hours 😵 I am drying her in the same tent as Orla in the lighthouse net. Put her into the net and turned the extractor up a bit. Weighed her and I have 467g. I read that you lose approximately 70% of the weight when drying (thats a bloody shame 😩), so am hoping to end up with around 150g (5OZ) when she is dry. Thats quite a step up from the 16g I got off Wendy my other white widow 😩😯.
Dec 14 (day 105): End of week 15. Both girls harvested and drying in the tent. I will continue to post updates on this page until she has finished curing and then I will add the final 'Harvest' page.
Dec 15 (day 106): Drying nicely and losing moisture. However, still damp in comparison to Orla who is crisping up already. Assume its a strain thing and all those white pistils! Continuing to go down into the cellar and swish them about each day. With the nets, you need to turn the buds regularly so they don't get flat on one side 😂
Dec 21 (day 112): She’s dry now and ready for trimming and curing. I am going to put Orla and Wanda into glass jars rather than Grove Bags like their sisters. I want to make a comparison to see if there is any difference. It’s more of a pain to have to burp the jars, but as I have to check on the new seedlings daily, I am in the cellar anyway. Dry weight was 93 grams, which is a HUGE improvement on Wendy. Will update the harvest page in 4 weeks when she is cured and I have had my first smoke 😶🌫️😀😎
I grew two White Widow plants for my first grow, 10 days apart. Wendy my first didn't harvest very much, but I learned my lessons quickly and was able to produce a MUCH bigger plant with this one. I got a really nice harvest so am very pleased 😁
