Hello Growers! I'm excited to give Durban Poison a try. I've never sampled or grown this classic. This is a 10 week flowering, 80% Sativa / 20% Indica feminized photo-period. I plan to grow her DWC style, and ScrOG her out to fill my 2x4x8 foot Gorilla Grow tent. I hope to use multi-leveled trellis netting to grow some tall speared colas. Wish me luck 😀. The Germination details: Saturday October 16 ---13 Hour seed soak in distilled water. The seed sank in the first hour after a finger poke. 3pm, paper towel/ coffee filter method between two small dishes, placed on top of my router. Approx. 78F. Sunday October 17 ----11:30 am seed has sprouted a root about 1.3 cm long (see pics above), after 20.5 hours. The little sprout was then sandwiched inside a rook wool cube with some Great White powder and placed into her 6" net cup with hydroton media. WEEK 1 VEGETATION ....And we're off and growing again. I'm giving her gentle light and nutrients till she gets rooted. So far no roots are showing at the bottom of the net cup. I wanted her to stretch up some this week. This will allow me to back fill the net cup with hydroton to block out light from entering the reservoir. I'm pleased with this weeks growth. My Nutrient Inputs: To keep costs down, I will be using a powdered nutrient ( 5-12-25 Tomato Blend ) by MasterBlend, plus Epsom Salt (Magnesium Sulfate), and Calcium Nitrate. This is essentially the Jack's 3-2-1 method ( for those of you who are familiar with it ), except I'm using MasterBlend, a more readily available manufacturer in Canada. I mixed up two concentrated stock solutions to make a Part A and Part B, for fast, easy reservoir mixing. The formula is roughly 3 parts MasterBlend, 2 parts Calcium Nitrate, and 1 part Epsom Salt, all measured by weight. To Make Part A - Start with a 4 Liter bottle of distilled water. Remove about 2 liters and set aside. Mix in 720 grams of MasterBlend and stir until fully dissolved. Then mix in 240 grams of Epsom Salt (magnesium sulfate) and stir until fully dissolved. Now add back enough distilled water, that was set aside earlier, to make 4 liters of stock solution. Store in a cool, dark place. Light proof containers are advised. To Make Part B - Start with a 4 Liter bottle of distilled water. Remove about 2 liters and set aside. Mix in 500 grams of Calcium Nitrate and stir until fully dissolved. Now add back enough distilled water, that was set aside earlier, to make 4 liters of stock solution. Store in a cool, dark place. Light proof containers are advised. Part A gets mixed into the reservoir, followed by part B. Equal amounts of Part A and Part B are typically used. These stock solutions will make several hundred gallons ( depending on your dosage strength ) of mixed reservoir nutrients, inexpensively. WEEK 2 VEGETATION This week is basically a repeat of week 1. Still using the same reservoir water from last week. On Sunday, roots started showing at the bottom of the net cup. I let her continue to stretch up some this week. This will allow me to further back fill the net cup with hydroton, to block out light from entering the reservoir. She is showing signs of hunger. Now that she has started growing a few roots down into the reservoir, I'll start next week with a stronger reservoir feed and move her under better lighting. My Nutrient Inputs: To keep costs down, I will be using a powdered nutrient ( 5-12-25 Tomato Blend ) by MasterBlend, plus Epsom Salt (Magnesium Sulfate), and Calcium Nitrate. WEEK 3 VEGETATION See VEG Week 2 for details of stock solution A & B. I use the Bluelab Combo Meter to measure pH, ppm (TDS) 500 scale, and temperature. This week started with a reservoir change out. 3.5 Gallons of reverse osmosis water + 7 mL Green Planet Plant Guard + 7 mL GHE CALiMAGic + 21mL Stock solution Part A + 21 mL stock solution Part B = 500 ppm, pH 6.8, 66F. I then adjusted the reservoir pH down to 5.6 using Phosphoric acid (exercise caution when using this stuff, it can blind and burn skin), 85% by volume as a pH down. A 1 ml pipette does this job precisely a droplet at a time. Next task was to set up her grow environment. I moved her from my hallway into a 2x4x8ft Gorilla grow tent. She was put under an Electric Sky ES300 version 1 (no dimmer version). This light is now 3 years old, and isn't as efficient as newer LEDs; however, the spectrum works well and lights up this footprint just fine. The first light cycle (Monday) was at a height of 40 inches. On Tuesday I dropped the light to 24 inches from the top of the plant, where it will be maintained for the duration of the vegetative grow cycle. I'm running a 16 hours light cycle with a 8 hour dark cycle. I have no reasoning for doing this, other than hoping to save a few $$$ and reduce the reservoir temperature. A humidifier is used that has its own built in humidistat. I top it up once a day with R.O. water. The humidity is set at 60% R.H. to achieve my desired VPD of 1.0Kpa. Daily this week, I have checked the reservoir during the first hour of lights on. Each day the results have been the same - 500ppm, 6.4 pH, 72F, and daily I have been adjusting the pH back down to 5.6 - 5.7. In my case, this has required 6 or 7 drops of my pH down. The next day the pH has risen back up to 6.4 again. Maintaining this pH range shouldn't create any problems. Now that the roots are making their way into the nutrient reservoir, she is really starting to grow. I'll try to post a root zone picture next week (where did I leave my tripod??😑). The plant grew to a height where her cotyledons matched the top of the net cup. This was ideal, since I wanted to back-fill the net cup up to the cotyledons with more hydroton to block light entering the reservoir. Her growth pattern of her leaf sets is 1 - 3 - 7 fingers so far. The leaves are quite serrated on the edges and generally are not looking at all "sativa-ish?". On Friday I pinched off her first set of true leaves. They were looking a little pathetic and were not really contributing to the plants health. The main stem is really thickening up nicely, and the nodal spacing is staying tight, producing a squat plant at this early stage. So far I am really pleased with the growth😀!!! WEEK 4 VEGETATION See VEG Week 2 for details of stock solution A & B. I use the Bluelab Combo Meter to measure pH, ppm (TDS) 500 scale, and temperature. Monday - This week started with the usual reservoir change out. 3.5 Gallons of reverse osmosis water + 7 mL Green Planet Plant Guard + 10.5 mL GHE CALiMAGic + 24.5mL Stock solution Part A + 24.5 mL stock solution Part B = 640 ppm, 5.6 pH, 65F. Tuesday - The reservoir measured 630 ppm, 6.4 pH, 72F. I then pH'd back down to 5.6 pH. Wednesday - The reservoir measured 630 ppm, 6.3 pH, 72F. I then pH'd back down to 5.6 pH. Thursday - The reservoir measured 600 ppm, 6.4 pH, 72F. I then pH'd back down to 5.7 pH. I noticed the leaves are twisting away from the light and the leaf tips are clawing down at the tips. I moved the bucket down to floor level (removed the small bucket under it), this place the light 33 inches from the canopy top. 4 hours later I decided to change out the reservoir. 3.5 Gallons of reverse osmosis water + 3.5 mL GHE CALiMAGic + 30mL Stock solution Part A + 30 mL stock solution Part B = 530 ppm, 5.6 pH, 67F. Friday - The reservoir measured 530 ppm, 6.6 pH, 70F. pH'd back down to 5.8. Saturday - The reservoir measured 520 ppm, 6.5 pH, 71F. pH'd back down to 5.8. Sunday - The reservoir measured 510 ppm, 6.6 pH, 71F. pH'd back down to 5.8. WOW, I've witnessed the explosive growth that DWC can provide!! I'm seeing an issue with some of the leaves turning 90 degrees up/or down? ( Friday's pic ) Like they are trying to avoid the light. I'm not sure what this issue is? Maybe, they are tired of me looking at them, lol😍. Too much light??? I am seeing some downward tip clawing on the leaf tips. Too much nutrients??? I backed off the feed a little on Thursday, and moved this girl away from the light some. I also wonder what impact the change in relative humidity has on this girl. Prior to opening the tent, the relative humidity is typically 60 to 65%. Shortly after opening the tent, the RH drops to 40% and I receive an alert from the Pulse App. If anyone has any insight into this issue, please comment below. Otherwise, she appears to be growing just fine. Really tight inter-nodal spacing, thick main stem development, and she is putting out the 9 finger leaves at only 6 inches tall😄. That's it for this week. Please follow along, drop a like or comment, and share your experience with this strain. Peace, DeaneR😎

WEEK 5 VEGETATION See VEG Week 2 for details of stock solution A & B. I use the Bluelab Combo Meter to measure pH, ppm (TDS) 500 scale, and temperature. Monday - 7 pm. The reservoir measured 510 ppm, 6.8 pH, 71F. I then pH'd back down to 5.8 pH. Tuesday - 12 am. Reservoir change out. 3.5 Gallons of reverse osmosis water + 5.25 mL Green Planet Plant Guard + 10.5 mL GHE CALiMAGic + 21 mL Stock solution Part A + 21 mL stock solution Part B = 580 ppm, pH 5.7, 67F. Wednesday - 1 am. The reservoir measured 570 ppm, 6.4 pH, 75F. I then pH'd back down to 5.7 pH. The reservoir level has dropped about 1/2 inch in the past 24 hours. Thursday - 1 am. The reservoir measured 570 ppm, 6.5 pH, 74F. I then pH'd back down to 5.7 pH. Friday - 1 am. The reservoir measured 540 ppm, 6.5 pH, 75F. pH'd back down to 5.8 pH. Friday - 5 pm. The reservoir measured 530 ppm, 6.6 pH, 70F. pH'd back down to 5.9. Topped up the reservoir (Back to the white "zip-tie" indicator on the display tube) with 1 Gallon of reverse osmosis water + 2 mL Green Planet Plant Guard + 2 mL GHE CALiMAGic + 6 mL Stock solution Part A + 6 mL stock solution Part B = 530 ppm, pH 5.5, 67F. Saturday - The reservoir measured 520 ppm, 6.5 pH, 71F. pH'd back down to 5.8. Sunday - The reservoir measured 510 ppm, 6.6 pH, 71F. pH'd back down to 5.8. The reservoir is now 1/2 empty and holds about 1.75 gallons of nutrient/water solution. Reservoir change out tomorrow. WOW, I've witnessed more explosive DWC growth this week! This girl is getting well established and hitting her stride. She has started producing 11 finger leaves, and has really become a dense bush, with a lot of tight nodes. No training techniques yet...still judging her growth characteristics and structure. She is consuming over a half a gallon, per day, from her reservoir. I'm hoping to ease my maintenance of this girl, with a move to a larger reservoir next week🙏. Please follow along, drop a like or comment, and share your experience with this strain. Peace, DeaneR😎

WEEK 6 VEGETATION See VEG Week 2 for details of stock solution A & B. I use the Bluelab Combo Meter to measure pH, ppm (TDS) 500 scale, and temperature. This week started with a move from the 5 gallon bucket, to a bigger reservoir. I DIY'd a tote, to use as a 12 gallon reservoir. I run this DWC on the second floor of my home, and wanted a simple, LEAK PROOF design. It utilizes a Bucket-top 6 inch net-cup. This allows me to start my girl in a 3.5 gallon bucket, and graduate from there, to a 5 gallon, and finally to the 12 gallon tote....easy transplanting. A fine tooth jigsaw blade cuts the net cup hole easily. A step drill bit works great for the access hole, as it cuts cleanly and doesn't drift. Existing holes were used for the airlines. A heavy Duty garbage bag keeps light out. I fill the system with 3 batches X 4 gallons of nutrient/R.O. water mixture. My mix/fill bucket contains an aquarium power-head that both mixes and adds oxygen to the water through the venturi effect. A spigot on the side of the bucket is used to drain it, through a short length of hose into the reservoir. To empty the reservoir, I use a small transfer pump. The pump runs on two AA batteries, and moves about 2.8 gallons per minute. This pump gets inserted into the access hole and transfers to a five gallon bucket. Monday - 2 pm. New 12 Gallon Reservoir fill up. 3 X (4 Gallons of reverse osmosis water + 8 mL Green Planet Plant Guard + 8 mL GHE CALiMAGic + 32 mL Stock solution Part A + 32 mL stock solution Part B) = 600 ppm, pH 5.8, 67F. The plant is 10 inches tall and 27 inches from the light. Defoliated the lower fan leaves that were once hanging over the edge of the bucket,.... but are now laying on top of the tote. Tuesday - 6 pm. Reservoir level down 1/2 inch. The reservoir measured 580 ppm, 6.3 pH, 70F. I then used 10 drops of my pH down to bring pH to 5.8. Wednesday - 8 pm. The plant is 12 inches tall and 25 inches from the light. Seeing some tip burn from nutrients. The reservoir is down ~2 Gallons. 2 Gallon R.O. top up. The reservoir now measures 500 ppm. I pH'd to 5.9 @ 69F. Defoliated some lower fan leaves and small branches. Thursday - 2 pm. The reservoir measured 490 ppm, 6.2 pH, 70F. I then pH'd back down to 5.8 pH. Thursday - 10 pm. The reservoir measured 480 ppm, 6.0 pH, 73F. Friday - 2 pm. Air temp 72F, RH57%. The plant is 13 inches tall and 24 inches from the light. The reservoir measured 470 ppm, 6.2 pH, 71F. pH'd back down to 5.8 pH. Reservoir level down~1.5 Gallons from full. Topped the plant above the 7th node. I was aiming for the 6th node😂 I couldn't see through this bush of a plant, lol. That'll due for now - Noticed a hollow main stem (trunk). Saturday - 4 pm. The reservoir measured 460 ppm, 6.3 pH, 68F. pH'd back down to 5.8. The reservoir is now down 2.5 Gallons from full. Peeked in at the roots - looking white and healthy, developing nicely. Sunday 5 pm - The plant is now 14 inches tall - raised light 1 inch, to 24 inches from the plant. The reservoir measured 440 ppm, 6.4 pH, 69F. The reservoir now contains about 8.5 gallons of nutrient/water solution. Reservoir change out. 3 X (4 Gallons of reverse osmosis water + 8 mL Green Planet Plant Guard + 8 mL GHE CALiMAGic + 28 mL Stock solution Part A + 28 mL stock solution Part B) = 550 ppm, pH 5.8, 67F, 12 Gallons. Defoliated some lower leaves. WOW, good growth this week! Still dialing in her feed strength. I burnt her tips a little. Hard to tell she's been topped or defoliated at all😝. I'm thinking another two weeks of veg (8 total) to get this girl to fully fill and cover this 2x4 footprint. After one round of fill, and reservoir change out, I am pleased with my DWC set up and method. Only another 12 or so rounds to go!!!! WEEK 8 VEGETATION See VEG Week 2 for details of stock solution A & B. I use the BlueLab Combo Meter to measure pH, ppm (TDS) 500 scale, and temperature. A great week in the tent, with big changes! Monday - 2 pm. Reservoir measured 500 ppm, 6.1pH, 69F @ ~11 Gallons. Tuesday - 2 pm. Tent 74F @ 60%RH. Plant is 24 inches tall and 20 inches from the light. Reservoir level down to ~9.75 Gallons. Reservoir measured 490 ppm, 6.3 pH, 69F. Ph'd back down to 5.8. Raised the light 3 inches to 23 inches above the plant canopy. Wednesday - 1 am. Tent 75F @ 58%RH. The reservoir is down to ~ 9 Gallons, 480 ppm, 6.2 pH, 70F. Reservoir top up to 12 Gallons. Added 3 Gallons of R.O. water + 18mL CALiMAGic. Reservoir now at 500ppm, pH'd down to 5.8 @ 69F. Thursday - 2 am. Tent 75F @ 57%RH. The plant is 27 inches tall and 20 inches from the light...wow 3 inches growth in a couple of days! Raised light 2 inches. The reservoir is down 2 Gallons to ~10 Gallons - measured 470 ppm, 6.4 pH, 71F. I then pH'd back down to 5.8 pH. Friday - 1 am . Reservoir @ 9 Gallons and measured 470 ppm, 6.5 pH, 70F. Reservoir top up with 3 Gallons of R.O. water + 6 mL Green Planet Plant Guard + 6 mL GHE CALiMAGic + 18 mL Stock solution Part A + 18 mL stock solution Part B) = 510 ppm, pH 5.7, 64F. Reservoir now 490 ppm, pH'd back down to 5.8, 67F @ 12 Gallons. Saturday - 7 pm. Tent 76F, 61%RH. Plant is 29 inches tall and 20 inches from the light. Reservoir is @ 10 Gallons, 490 ppm, 6.0 pH Sunday 9 pm - The plant is now 15 inches tall (to the netting) after training flat for ScrOG technique. Adjusted the light to 24 inches above the trellis netting. The reservoir contains about 8 gallons of nutrient/water solution. The reservoir measured 480 ppm, 6.6 pH, 68F. Reservoir change out. 3 X (4 Gallons of reverse osmosis water + 8 mL Green Planet Plant Guard + 12 mL GHE CALiMAGic + 26 mL Stock solution Part A + 26 mL stock solution Part B) = 580 ppm, pH 5.8, 68F, 12 Gallons. Defoliated, applied ScrOG netting, LST, HST. Good growth this week, from 22 to 29 inches!, and drinks over a Gallon a day. At the end of the week, I applied a D.I.Y. PVC trellis netting frame (4 inch squares), to begin the ScrOG training process. After "pancaking" her out flat, I thought "YIKES!...What have I done to this beautiful bush of a plant?, maybe I should have just flowered her out?". That though lingered for a bit, and I soon brushed aside all doubts about my actions. Knowing from experience just how resilient cannabis is, I'm picturing a full trellis in short time. The stems on this girl were very flexible. I believe the Green Planet Plant Guard Silica really helped to keep her stems pliable. A 15 inch space between the top of the reservoir and the the trellis net seemed appropriate when judging how to splay out this girl. Enough room for me get my paws under her for training/pruning, and maintenance of the reservoir. Please follow along, drop a like, comment, or question, and share your experience with this strain. Lots of trimming, tucking, and futzing around. Monday - Trim and tuck session. Tuesday - Tent 75F @ 60%RH. Plant is 24 inches from the light. Reservoir level down to ~ 10 Gallons. Reservoir measured 590 ppm, 6.0 pH, 70F. No pH adjustment. Wednesday - The reservoir is down to ~ 9 Gallons, 580 ppm, 6.5 pH, 70F. Reservoir top up to 12 Gallons. Added 3 Gallons of R.O. water + 6mL Green Planet Plant Guard +10mL CALiMAGic + 18 mL Stock solution Part A + 18 mL stock solution Part B) = 600 ppm, pH 5.8, 71F. Reservoir now at 590ppm, pH'd down to 5.8 @ 70F. Saturday - 1 pm. Reservoir @ 9 Gallons and measured 580 ppm, 6.5 pH, 70F. pH'd back down to 5.7. Sunday - 2 pm. Room @ 70F, 45%RH - Tent @ 76F, 63%RH. More Defoliation/Tuck/Bend. Readjust light up an inch to 22 inches above the canopy. Reservoir @ 8 Gallons, 600 ppm, 6.4 pH, 70F. Added Box fan to lower left side of the tent. Moved the 6" oscillating fan to upper canopy, left side, rear of the tent. Tent Relative Humidity reduced to 55%. New reservoir change out - 3 X (4 Gallons of reverse osmosis water + 8 mL Green Planet Plant Guard + 12 mL GHE CALiMAGic + 30 mL Stock solution Part A + 30 mL stock solution Part B) = 640 ppm, pH 5.8, 68F, 12 Gallons. Good progress this week filling in the trellis net. Lots of new tops forming. On Wednesday I changed the light schedule to 12 hours ON/12 OFF, from a 16 hour ON/8 OFF. Tent 76F, 55%RH. Reservoir down ~ 2.5 Gallons and measures 670 ppm, 6.2 pH, 69F. Seeing some tip burn, and nutrient levels are climbing. Need to lower nutrient concentration. Top up reservoir with ~2.5 Gallons of R.O. water. Reservoir now 12 Gallons 560 ppm, pH 5.8, 68F. Raised light 2 inches to 24 inches above the plant canopy. Canopy about 6 inches above/through the trellis net. Friday - Reservoir at 570 ppm, 6.3 pH, 68F. pH'd back down to 5.8. Saturday - Reservoir @ 9.5 Gallons and measured 580 ppm, 6.5 pH, 70F. pH'd back down to 5.7. Sunday - Room @ 70F, 47%RH - Tent @ 76F, 60%RH. Readjust light up to 20 inches above the canopy. Reservoir @ 8 Gallons, 560 ppm, 6.7 pH, 70F. New reservoir change out - 3 X (4 Gallons of reverse osmosis water + 8 mL Green Planet Plant Guard + 8 mL GHE CALiMAGic + 28 mL Stock solution Part A + 28 mL stock solution Part B) = 560 ppm, pH 5.8, 65F, 12 Gallons. Good progress this week. Added a second layer of trellis netting. How much is this girl going to stretch???????😳 over the next weeks of flower. Hey man! Just a thought, but maybe when those leaves turn 90 degs they are praying really hard, I mean it could be osmotic pressure in the plant that makes it turn that way, and apparently there's not much light difference on both sides of the leaf that it doesn't affect it's position
DeaneR
DeaneRcommented3 years ago
@bobtheblob, I'm still puzzled. Whatever the cause, the symptoms have subsided😉.

Great work as usual👌 Does that dwc method up the humidty in your house much? I'm already running a dehumidifier in the basement and taking almost 8 liters of water out of the air and keeping the basement at 55% RH and the rest of the house at 40-45% rh, and I'm using soil.Hard to keep the rh where I want because our house looks like a jungle, plants everywhere. I'm using the water from the dehumidifier to water all the house plants, I just add some (kelp me kelp you) to bring the PH up a little from the RO water coming from the dehumidifier all plants are super happy. Mery Christmas!!!

@DeaneR,Hey thanks for getting back to me👊.. Thinking about trying it out in the future sometime, we'll see.. Later!!!
DeaneR
DeaneRcommented3 years ago
@northernMike, Thanks Mike. I don't think this DWC method raises my homes RH, any more than my previous coco grows, with fabric pots (think of the surface area of the pot and media drying, plus runoff in the tray). I found little loss due to evaporation using this DWC style. I put a plastic sheet around the stem of the plant, to block light and reduce evaporation. The plants do grow quickly though, and are transpiring a gallon per day...So its like having one of those room humidifiers running 24/7. It's been a warm/damp December in my area. Normally, my NG furnace helps lower my house RH. I disabled my HVAC's humidifier and run a DC furnace fan 24/7 to help circulate my house air. My house was built in the 60's, so the basement is always damper than the rest of the house. Have a happy Happy, merry Merry!!!!👊
