May 23: planted quickly as the seedlings seemed to be stretching for light under fluorescents and it was nice and sunny out.
Three into raised bed which we now know has alkaline soil that needs to be replaced. Three more into large grow bag with good soil for comparison.
May 26: it’s very dry here during the day (25% RH) so I’m misting the seedlings with water frequently. This is a new ploy and I’m thinking that low humidity is why my outdoor seedlings usually start so slowly compared to indoors.
Later start makes for a better start than last year. 👍 having said that, it has been a coolish spring with some pretty low overnight temps for May and early June so I’m glad I waited.
Experimenting with three plants in a big pot with one to be trained around the rim.
June 24: looking good. Decided to mostly tie down rather than top the Gorilla Glue Autos after seeing how well the Auto White Widow has responded to the tie down.
June 30: tie down method is surprisingly easy and helpful for an outdoor grow. Broke the main stem on one plant, but mostly problem free so far.
July 1: easing up on the FPJ and adding more P using bird guano. Adding 1/2 tsp per 5 gallon pail, but will likely increase this.
Added malted barley as a top dressing.
July 3: added Power Bloom as a top dressing along with the malted barley.
July 6: broke main stem near top on one doing tie down. See before and after pics.
July 8: some plants are starting to flower so I’ll call this a flowering week.
July 11: the biggest plant has really big fan leaves and is already about a metre tall. The three plants in a big bag is starting to look like a chair or something. Plant tied to rim giving off nice growth tips.
Flowering isn’t far enough along for them to fluoresce under flash light. Okay to do this for for autos, but likely not a great idea for photoperiods.
July 14: now 50 inches tall or about 1.3 m. Pretty big for an eight week old autoflower.
July 17: The earliest ones are really fast growing and now almost five feet tall and it’s not even 8 weeks old yet.
Added second Scrog net to the “chair” which refers to the theee plants in one big bag.
Found a single scrawny male plant in the main planter with these feminized seeds. He was culled.
July 21: these plants are quite tall for their age. The biggest ones are 61 inches tall after 63 days of growing. Awesome but I’m not sure letting them go untrained would maximize yield. The fermented plant juice made from cannabis tops seems to be super potent causing plants to grow really quickly. Too quick actually so I have been cutting out the FPJ lately. Anyway, still experimenting.
July 31: added second round of Power Bloom and malt as top dressing. Started using soluble wood ash as K source. See today’s Gorilla Gelato diary for details.
Well these are not ‘normal autos’. Size very much depends on the available soil volume with the ones in the raised bed being over 5 feet (1.5 m) after just 8 weeks. These plants tend to be tall and skinny so a sea of green approach might have been better than trying to tie them down (too much work at scale with too many losses due to broken limbs). Anyway, they have flowered nicely and things look pretty good. Harvest starting soon.
Aug 21: switched to plain water.
Aug 24: nearing end so just plain pHed water.
Aug 27: suddenly cool and humid for a few days. Foliar spray of LAB for the entire garden to help guard against other micro-organisms. In KNF these LAB are sometime referred to as ‘the police’ as they help keep things under control. Used frequently last year and had minimal bud rot problems.
@Eroben, thanks. It’s 3.5 inch cell size netting that I used on the big Candyland manifold. With the tie down going on two plants there, I just wanted to see if it would work. Seems like it, and I’m amazed at how well the tie downs are working.
