May 18: third attempt at cloning. Two earlier attempts failed due to over heating from pumping. Need to use a cycle timer to keep water temp down. Tried one min on, and two min off, but still too much with water hitting 28 C in a few hours. Now trying 1 on 4 off. Third time lucky?
May 31: visible roots showing so it looks like the third try worked. First two attempts failed due to water overheating from pump running too much. Cycle time 1 min on and off for 4 min has worked.
June 1: taking best rooted clones and planting in ProMix HP. Still fragile for a couple weeks so kept in shade out of direct sun in afternoon and under fluorescent lights (17/7 cycle) overnight. Clones supposedly grow faster than plants from seed once rooted, but I’m surprised to see obvious foliage growth after just half a day.
June 2: out of 5 L pots so planting directly into dry soil and then gently watering. Outside but covered with shade cloth.
The overnight lows are high enough and I should be able to get away with treating the clones this way.
June 4: sunlight yesterday was quite strong but the shade cloth worked and the clones survived me being away for the afternoon. So far so good.
June 7: clones seem to be thriving so it looks like this transition to soil outdoors is working. Overcast skies helping in that the sunlight isn’t too strong for the little ones.
June 15: clone in ground as part of ‘domestic four’ which also includes Hash Bud clone, Fast Skunk, and 11Roses x Super Skunk Auto. These four photoperiods will be left to flower with natural light cycle. This rarely works this far north because we tend to get big/huge veg but by the time most start flowering it’s too late for them to finish before frost. Gonna try anyway because light deprivation is a pain that should be avoided where possible. Also want to see specifically what happens to the clones.
June 24: Bubble OG is the biggest and easiest to clone of the three big manifolded plants.
It has been a cool and wet June here.
June 29: field clone is falling behind. Native soil was used, which is excellent for most plants, without adding peat, perlite or compost. This was intentional to see if it would work. Amended soil plants are doing better than this one.
July 23: the clone in the field is smaller due to the use of native soil and the lack of consistent watering and attention.
Bubble OG is likely the fastest growing strain this year.
July 28: great purple colour to the buds is a surprise but very nice. Still growing very fast.
July 29: done with force flowering as all plants are solidly flowering. Force flowering works but it is a lot of work and takes some serious dedication. Back to natural 16 h light cycle. Great to see the flowers forming on all the plants though so it is a very satisfying project.
July 31: added second round of Power Bloom and malt as top dressing. Started using soluble wood ash as K source. See today’s Gorilla Gelato diary entry for details.
Sep 24: like the other Bubble OG plants, I’m using a far red light at dusk as a bloom booster. A few seconds of bright 730 nm light at the right time (I’m using Civil Twilight as listed on timeanddate.com) puts the plant into dark mode. This saves two hours compared to the normal plant response, and it’s been described as being like a 26 hour day where you have an extra two hours of darkness for blooming.
The field plant has been ‘phyto-forced’ (I think that’s the term) just like the big Bubble OG manifold. See that diary for details about how beavers cut the power a couple of time at dusk and how that caused some plants to re-veg.
Yes, I’m blaming the re-vegged buds on beavers chopping down trees which fall on the power lines. That and the long days and the warm weather.
Sep 27: took another round of 595 g wet or a total of 2169 g wet so far.
Sep 29: field clone is showing the nice purple colour on the buds.
Oct 4: took last of the remaining three clones for 335 g wet for total of 2,504 g. Not sure of the exact clone count for Bubble OG but likely around 15 in this batch not counting the field plant which I’ll weigh separately.
Grow area clones were force flowered and formed better buds under stronger sunlight. Field clone was not light deprived. Early buds are better but the field plant got bigger.
All of the Bubble OG plants and clones were ‘phyto-forced’ by shining a far red light (730 nm) on them at dusk. See Part 2 of Bubble OG manifold for further comments.
