Hello all,
I have been wanting to log a grow for awhile and today when one of my orders came, I saw a chance to grow out and document an exciting new release. As of this posting on 10/07/22 the current freebie from NASC is a Twenty20 Mendo strain they developed for a Speakeasy series for the seed bank. The name spoke to me and I had to have it. Double Whiskey Sour is Double White x Whiskey Zulu. I will be soaking this seed in standard tap water only for about 24 hours. I will then put into a Root Riot rapid rooter cube and put in a germination tray with dome in tent for couple days and hope to see a sprout. I use the rapid rooter cubes instead of direct sow so I can better ensure temp and humidity as well as avoid the hotness of the Fox Farm for a seedling and give it a little buffer. I try to transplant pretty soon after sprouting to avoid transplant shock and count day one as first full day with those all so recognizable leaves out. I hope to do a decent job with weekly updates and photos. I will also be logging this grow on the AFN Network to earn my Cultivators Club Badge under same user name.
Some information about this grow:
Pot: I usually grow perpetually with 1 gallon pots as I like variety and stuffing my tent. But since I am documenting this grow, I want to give this one a bigger battery and more chance to perform. So I will be using 3 gallon fabric pot. I have some square ones AC Infinity ones I have never used that I plan to try out.
Media: I use Fox Farm Ocean Forest soil. I know it is hot for seedlings so I use Root Riot rapid rooter cubes thinking it helps buffer in early days. I sometimes get some funkiness I chalk up to hot soil when they are in first weeks.
Nutrients: I have been working my way through lines trying to find my one. This plant will be first to see the Cold War Organics powdered nutrient line. I will be using Coming of Age, Angel's Touch and Bud Bread as my primary nutrients. I will be "saucing my bases" with some Ruby Ful#$%, Carbonaria and Winter Frost all from New Millennium, Fish Shit and Cal Mag. I feed every other watering and I will throw in some recharge on water only days here and there throughout grow.
Methodology: I top my plants pretty young. I don't count nodes, I look at plant and decide if its time or not lol Sometimes its day 14, sometimes its day 20. Rarely later than that. I will use tomato clips to start the LST process fairly young and then go with tie downs to try to even out as well as I can. The pots I am using have slots on all 4 corners for bamboo stakes and that's how I plan to support if needed.
Dry & Cure: I will go for about 20% amber or so. Don't go too strict on that I don't even scope until the bud looks mature to the eye to me. I will let her go longer but with using Winter Frost, I have been seeing 75-80 days max but using bigger pot may push it closer to 85. She will tell me, this is just a guess. I chop plants whole and hang upside inside 4 ft lawn bags in closet as close to 60/60 as I can get for 10-14 days. Then a dry trim, possibly burped in brown bag for day or two if needed then sealed in a Grove bag for at least a month.
OK, I think that's all to kick this off. Lets see how it goes :)
Week 1 begins with sprout on day 4. All is well and she will be given water only for next 3 weeks. Don't expect much in form of update over next 2-3 weeks but I will update weekly with photos and anything weird or notable occurs.
Week 3 begins: She recoverd quickly from topping and was looking like a beast. It was time she entered the dojo. She got some training today via tomato clips off Amazon. She will likely start nutes this upcoming week. She got hit once with Recharge otherwise it's been PHed water only.
Week 4 begins with plant on day 26 from sprout. She shows signs of preflower and last week of vegetative growth likely. She has exploded out to a beautiful bush so far and kicked out a tent mate by completely over shadowing her. The way she is growing I wish I could give her even more room than she already has but she is tent to tent width wise and hanging over some vegging plants along edges of tent. She will get her first feeding today as its been water only except for some Recharge a week or so ago. I did some light defoliation, lollipopping and some more low stress training today via clips and it will likely be the last training as she will be in to full flower before long. I don't know if its because I have been growing in smaller pots or what but this plant has been really impressing me so far!! Glad I have two more of these beans and right now is week 6 of the Speakeasy series and I am 6 for 6 thus far and in running for box, more to come.
Day 31 update
She is a beast. I hate I had to butt her up to end as she was overshadowing the other plants. I've gotten one out and am working to get these other vegging plants out of tent so she can have as much room as she needs.
Day 39 and all is well. I got lazy and didn't tie down taller branches so canopy isn't as even as I'd like but she's spread out. She's getting flower nutes now and taking full dose like a pro. I fried another smaller plant with same feed so she is hardy. No more training, just alternating water and feedings.
Another week and all is well. I'm continuing to feed every other watering and she is going 2-4 days between waterings. Today is day 47 and I was late to lollipop and defoliate but I did both ones last time. She's already recoverd and perked up since doing so. No more training for her. Just light defoliation until the home stretch.
Day 55: She likes to drink. Sometimes she'll go 3 days, sometimes 1 day. Nothing but slight defoliation from here on out with continuing to feed every other watering. Once she starts to stack up and look a little more mature I will think cutting off nutrients and hitting her with some Winter Frost. Having done mainly smaller 1 gallon soil grows recently this gorgeous lady is really impressing me! I have had double buds before, I forget the proper terminology but this one had me doing a double take with that cluster.
Today is day 64, so I am technically in start of week 9 so I am going to skip over week 8 in diary to be more accurate. Everything is going well so far. Still alternating feeding and watering. Environment is pretty consistent, plant seems pretty happy with no real signs of deficiency. Being day 64 and still in the "cotton ball" phase tells me she will likely go on the longer side. I stop feeding about two weeks out when they look mature but she has a ways to go to I think about cutting off feedings. Not much else to report. I did some light defoliation this week where applicable.
Hello all,
Today is day 72 and she is continuing to progress slow and steady. No where near thinking about cutting off nutrients, this big girl is on track to go about 100 days but that's just guessing. I have had them mature up quick before so well see. Nothing new to report, I am continuing to alternate feeding and watering. I will probably hit her with Recharge one last time next watering and then no more after that. I finished up the 12th week of the Speakeasy series with my Sangria stuck at local post office. Meanwhile, the 4 boxes for collecting all 12 have been claimed. Oh well, the genetics are the prize to me including this large luscious lady. More to come!
Greetings all,
Today is day 79 for this one and she is continuing to stack weight with little to no fuss. I have pushed the nutrients alittle bit and have ever so slight top burn. I regret nothing! lol The feeding will continue until her buds mature more. Starting to be lazy on PHing the water only days and need to tighten up. No signs of any issues yet but thats why I need to straighten up now. My well water comes out at about 8. So that will raise soil PH pretty quick I imagine. More next week! Thanks for looking
Today is day 89 and she still has many long hairs, some white but while in the tent I decided to check with scope and was surprised to see she is further along than the naked eye led me to believe. I am probably going to start hitting here with Winter Frost alone for a feeding or two then start to flush. I expected she would be a 100 day plant mid way into her veg and I still think its in the ballpark. I will get full plant photo mid week.
Today is day 103. The buds continue to swell and mature. I checked trichomes a couple days ago and she was about 15% amber. I am going to continue to water only and don't think she will see next weekend but her time will come when its time. More to come!
Update: Chopped on day 105. I had to break her down into 6 parts to use my normal dry chambers so I am not sure how that will effect time. I usually go for 10-14 days. I will update on trim day when the deed is done. I am not looking forward to that! I was lazy and did not remove any fan leaves day I chopped.
This thing was a beast from day one. I topped young, went hard on nutes and she just took it and kept growing. I would give this girl a big battery, I used 3 gallon. Imagine if I had 5 or 7 gallon pot? Top her, she can take it! Train her, she will thrive! If she vegges long and gets big, expect her to go long. All my Twenty20 autos get big but go a full 100+ days. If you give her the room, the battery and the food this girl can set personal bests. She did for me!
This girl got chopped on day 105. Today is day 11 of dry. I had to chop plant into about 6-8 pieces and hung upside down inside 4ft lawn bag in dry closet. RH was lower than desired but bags mitigate that. I pulled out today and bucked buds from stems and put into two piles. One pile with smaller buds I will run through a bowl trimmer and one pile with larger buds that I will hand trim. I them put them spread out across 3 brown bags to dry a little more before trim. This is partially to have a tad drier before trim and partially I planned to do it tomorrow the whole time and just wanted to get a head start.
Before I put away I had to weigh just to get idea. Because I had none. Now I know weight will change but not too much due to loss of moisture because they aren't damp. But I do understand the trim will take away. I took off stems and large fan leaves today but I still will lose some of course but the total dry weight of the unmanicured bud today was 10.5 ounces. If I get trimmed up tomorrow and its 8 or over I would be pretty siked! They aren't that leafy so 2.5 ounces of trim would be shocking but we will see. A half pound from 3 gallon pot of soil? YES!! I usually grow smaller plants in smaller pots. In a 3 gallon pot, I would have to look it up but my best yield the few times I ran this size would be 4-5 ounces. My personal best is 5.8 ounces or so from my first ever grow in 5 gallon pots. No matter how manicured I get with this tomorrow it crushes my personal best!
Update tomorrow with final dry weight and some pictures
Update:
Well I had something pop up and I didn't get a chance to trim till today. With it being a weekend and being done after work it was less than ideal for this size plant. I ended up taking all the colas, hand trimming and putting in a 1 lb grove bag. I took all the popcorn bud and put it in bowl with trim and am going to make infused coconut oil with it.
Just the prime hand trim colas weighed in ar 188.5 grams (6.73 oz). This is what I consider my yield and it's my personal best. The popcorn buds and sugar leaf weighed in 67.5 grams and will make for a strong batch of oil.
She will sit in the Grove bag for about 25-50 days still I dip in but I can see an ounce of this getting stolen to press for rosin and cold cure if needed. I will try to get some good bud pictures and initial smoke report as soon as I'm able.
Update: 8 days into cure I took out some to photo and press. I don't weigh returns but she gushed generously.
Wow man those are some huge stacked up colas! Funny that many ppl still think autos can’t yield. I just started one of these on 1/9 and only pray she ends up as crazy as yours!
