Still working on perfecting germination/transplant out of paper towel. 6/6 germinated fine but the Apple Fritter and Gushers couldn’t kick their seed shells and ended up dying :( - replanted those two 10 days after the initial germination. I think they will catch up with the others just fine assuming no more issues.

Anyone have advice on seeds that can’t kick their shells after germination? I wanted to try to help split them open with tweezers but didn’t want to harm the baby seedling inside.

Spritz the seed shell with water every hour or so until it falls off. The water softens the shell and helps the plant just enough to get rid of it. Trying to do it manually can cause unexpected damage too easily in my experience, which involves 100s and 100s of seedlings in close to 40 years of cultivation.

Lot happened since last update. Had a few casualties and replants. Mostly and issue with germination and not bucking the seed shell appropriately. The Apple Fritter replant is about 10 days behind the other seedlings and the Platinum Punch clone is substituting in for the Gushers because I ran out of seeds :( Although the AF is behind, I think I can get it caught up with the others before flowering them. The Platinum OG Punch Breath (aka PP plant 😉) is one of my favorite indicas from a local breeder who also is responsible for the Platinum Chunk Cookies also being grow in this run. Although it was more rocky of a start than I’d like, all in all I think I’m in good shape.

Lot of progress since the last update as well as a few unfortunate mishaps - Sometime late in week 5 of veg I topped all of the plants tallest main branches (2-5 tops each) after already LST’ing them earlier in veg which I think is promising so far. My usual approach to training the plants has been to top early in veg near the 6th or 7th node (as many of have probably been told) to try to get the plant to establish a more bushy growth pattern. This time I wanted to try to let the plant establish itself more before removing any tops (hence starting with LST). My thought process was that if I LST early on in veg I could get the plant to remain short and bushy and break the plants apical dominance. Then, wait until the plant is larger to top (and remove at that time, proportionally less “plant” from the plant, lol). So far I like the looks of the plants structure, and taking tops 2 weeks before flowering should lead to a good amount of main colas 🤞🏻 Secondly, and where the mishaps start, I introduced a small space heater to the tent. Since the temps started dropping here, my basement has cooled a lot and by proxy so has my tent. I noticed that my tent was especially cold Christmas Eve morning, and threw a heater in and rushed out to the festivities and accidentally burnt/dried out a few leaves and one branch on the already stunted Apple Fritter. After suspending it from the tents ceiling, I’ve had no further issues with it. Unfortunately its much harder to find floor space with six 4gal pots than it was with three 6.25gals. Switching to 12/12 now, can’t wait to see these girls flower!

Started these girl’s flower cycle on 12/26/22. Starting week 5 now. • Platinum Punch - Thirsty girl. Uses probably 25% more feed/water than the others. This is the only strain in this run that I have previous experience with, and I knew she was going to stretch like crazy into flower so I had to employ some bending and manipulating of branches to keep a proper distance to the light. I know this strain finishes *purple af* so it’s exciting to see the beginnings of this already. I have a good feeling that she is going to be the winner again when it comes to bag appeal and yield. • Platinum Chunk - She was the last plant to show signs of flowering, however stretched quite a bit early on. This plant shares a parent with the PP plant so this does not surprise me. It also is showing signs of turning purple already as well so that’s cool. Hopefully she finishes strong as well. • Zkittlez - This plant is growing the most consistent colas out of the lot. Looks to be about 10 main tops on this plant, all pretty much equal to each other. So far she is stacking well. • Biscotti - Very short and stocky plant. Looks to want to grow laterally rather than stretch upward during early flower. I have a feeling this plant will put up some chunky colas which is exciting. Very tight internodal spacing. • THC Bomb - This plant is quite sparse after pruning the smaller branches. It seems to want to devote all its energy to its main colas and did not grow sturdy side branches. Looks like the remaining branches will produce well though. This plant showed some early signs of nutrient burn, so I skipped a feeding (on all plants) and opted for a watering instead. I may withhold some feed from this plant again if it looks the same in a few days but since I caught it early it already seems to be resolving itself. • Apple Fritter - This poor girl… After already having to replanted 10 days late, it was also burned by the heater and was noticeably stunted. Fortunately the remaining healthy and strong branches look to be bearing good fruit for what it’s worth. This plant had to be boosted up to help even out the canopy but now gets appropriate light compared to the others. Hopefully will update more frequently going forward. Happy cultivating growmies!

Week 7 going strong, planning on going a full 9. I’m still impressed with this run so far, although I think I may have flown too close to the sun while chasing yield in my 4x2 tent. I think my efforts of maximizing top bud sites sacrificed bud size and density once they started flowering. I’m contemplating buying another 4x2 tent off my buddy and split my 6 plants up into groups of 3/tent going forward in hopes of (obviously) increasing yield but also to hopefully improve bud density by giving each plant proportionally more light than before.

Chop time for these ladies. Cut them down on Feb. 25th at 60 days of flower and started the hang drying process. Aiming for 60% humidity and 60 degrees for 10-14 days until I trim and then burp them in jars. I will post a final update for this journal once that is completed with final weights and bag appeal pictures.

Decently balanced smoke. Very resinous and large buds. Not the most dense but I screwed this grow up so that is mostly on me. I’m excited to try this strain again this summer outside!

Bummed that I tried for too many tops and ended up sacrificing yield, bud density and quality… live and learn!

Unfortunately this one ended up hermaphroditing on me late in flower without me seeing it. Luckily it was so late there wasn’t enough time for it to pollinate other plants. Bummer seeing that happen because it was a true hermaphrodite and not a stress reaction. Not the first time that has happened with seeds I’ve had from ILGM…

This mf stretched so much in flower it was an absolute menace. Had to bend the branches and tie them up to constrain it but I love the bud so much it makes it worth it lol. Pungent sweet floral candy smell and purple

Ive a great idea if ya ever have to help the seedling out of its shell get an old tweezers and pull the bottom apart about 10 mm put some double sided tape on each side and gently squeeze on each half of the seed when you think it has stuck to each side of the shell gently take the squeeze off the tweezers and it should pull apart or help it along by pulling each side to pull the seed open 😉, the spongy double sided tape is super sticky, can put a piece on first finger of each hand and lightly stick to each side of the seed and pull apart gently 👌, i getting a patent on this idea and making a tool 💡🤔✌️

@Paul_on, great idea! I think that is definitely worth a shot rather than prying the shell open. Thank you for the advice gromie!

Did you all see my idea to use two pieces of double sided tape wrapped around a tweezers or similar or first finger on each hand and stick to each side of the shell dont squeeze to tight when its stuck pull the two sides apart 👍🏻simples
