Hello and welcome to week 10 for poor Bertha. She has had a rough ride and is an anomalous plant but somewhat interesting nevertheless. Day 66: Bertha has three distinct areas of maturity. The tip is the most mature the cola nearest the base is youngest. Everything in between is in between. I will likely have to harvest this plant in parts. The buds are not so much fattening up anymore as they foxtailing. She's not in great shape bless her. Still... the frost levels are off the charts and the smell is so so nice. i would say 90% bud trichs cloudy on oldest buds. Day 68: I have adjusted the timer such that the main tent is now getting 20/4 upped from 18/6. After monitoring DLI at 18/6 for a week I am unhappy with the overall level but because of the varying heights of the plants I am limited in what I can do in adjusting the light height. Some areas were only getting 20 DLI. So I have rearranged to have the taller plants on the edges and the lowest in the middle and doing it this way all plants are getting between 35 and 50 DLI at 20/4 - although one or two cola tips here and there are getting 55. Will monitor for a week. Day 69: Fertigated 8l Day 70: More foxtailing and more progress. Bertha is not far away. Unsure whether to harvest in parts. End of week summary: Bertha is ticking along slowly but surely. Not much to report that you cannot see for yourself.

I have decided to let Bertha finish, it is only likely to be a few weeks anyway and I am not desperate for the space.

Alright guys I cannot say anything about this harvest yet I haven't the first clue what it will yield but the buds do not look tight or compact, they look light and airy and foxtail-y. However, the one redeeming quality that Bertha has is her absolutely intoxicating smell. I am using this mini harvest to test my small drying setup which is a really small 60x60x60 box, with a 4 inch hole in the middle of one side, and two USB fans moving the air around inside. I've been tweaking the setup and I have it pretty stable at 20.7 degrees celsius and 55% RH. If I am able to maintain these conditions (careful regular monitoring). Then I expect the dry to take about 5-7 days on the basis that she is really smol - if it takes more then great. I have been unable to pull myself away from the hole at the side of the tent multiple times already. It's just one of the most wonderful things I have ever smelled.

UnorthadoxDudecommented2 years ago
@Z4Z0Z, I am having about a 1 degree variance at the moment and the RH dropped to 47% overnight, I've lose the air hole and lets see how quickly it rises.

@UnorthadoxDude, I use the same setup for drying except that I cannot perfectly control temperature in that box...

I’m glad you kept her around; even though she didn’t turn out the way you hoped it’s still a really cool grow! Every grow is worth the experience Thanks for hanging on and sharing this one with us 🌱💜

@Themythicalchristine, by the way, I decided to add some photos of my other plants to this diary, since all the other diaries are full of photos and as Bertha isn't changing rapidly, I figured I'd stick them in here. :)

@Themythicalchristine, It is really fruity but sort of smells like sweets. Like refreshers specifically.

@NegotiatedBubble, Got it and makes sense. Good idea on weighing to determine when the bud stabilizes on the weight loss. Thanks!

@NegotiatedBubble, Good to know! Thank you for the recommendation, it is very much appreciated! I'll keep you updated on what I setup.

@MedicineMaker, you will need a tiny oscillating fan blowing indirectly and not on the actual buds. A larger fan in a 2x2 will dry out the buds prematurely. Something like a 200mm computer fan might work (stationary or tent exhaust). I picked up the below one for my cloning chamber: https://www.amazon.com/UTUO-Variable-Exhaust-Cooling-Adjustable/dp/B08MZBJMK4/ref=sr_1_4?crid=27DGGWUCUK7EN&keywords=220v+variable+speed+controller+computer+fan&qid=1678330506&s=electronics&sprefix=220v+variable+speed+controller+comptuer+fa%2Celectronics%2C137&sr=1-4

@MiyaguiOkPolilla, well the flavour and smell are both really good 8/10 the high is almost all head high, quick acting, not super long lasting. All in all better than nothing which i what I expected after all the problems!

@Drgreen13, thank you! She was a brief but wonderful smoke!

NegotiatedBubblecommentedweek 112 years ago
Nothing wrong with fox tails for personal smoke. Depending on the strain, it may give you more surface area for trichomes. Some concentrate producers will induce fox tailing for more resins to press. I heard that mentioned by Guru on the Dude Grows Show.

Alright it's day 74 in week 11 for Bertha. The smell is overpoweringly strong. The older colas have not grown or fattened at all this week. The younger colas are still progressing. I am going to check the trichs later but I am very close to chopping her. I need the space now and shes not far from done. I have also ordered some new kit. Clip on fan to replace floor fan giving me more space again... and a new tent for Citronella.

Beautiful grow! I'm glad you kept her as well, who know the smoke may be amazing anyway. So why do you think her growth stunted? It seems my Blueberry at week 7 has completely slowed down on growth. Not sure if it is related to doing some defoliation, I tried to be mindful and not take to many fan leaves. Thanks for sharing all your grows, I learn a lot. 🙏

I can't wait to hear about Bertha's smoke report. I know she has had a hard time of it, but from the frost levels and smell I bet she will surprise you 😀
UnorthadoxDude
UnorthadoxDudecommented2 years ago
@MedicineMaker, How nice 😊. I am a bit weird (in many ways) but specifically relevant here is that I care quite a bit more about the way something smells than the way it tastes. Quite honestly her scent saved her life (for a bit longer anyway). There isn't really much to do with her now but keep an eye on proceedings really. I think she will be at least partially chopped in probably about a week and a half or maybe 2 weeks.

@UnorthadoxDude, Oh well, I'll be here for you throughout the grow to see how it all turns out. Crazy how strong a smell Bertha is producing! I really hope it all turns out well! I'm wishing you all the luck with her and I remain positive!
UnorthadoxDude
UnorthadoxDudecommented2 years ago
@MedicineMaker, I am sorry to make you wait but I do think it will likely be about 2 months from now before I do a smoke report - by the time she finishes, dries, and cures. Quite possibly longer. I had some hope briefly last week that she might produce 20-30g, however that relied on the buds fattening and to be honest it looks like they are foxtailing now - which is no surprise given all the stresses this plant has had. The only one slightly concerning thing is that the smell is really close to one of the three plants in my first grow... and that plant turned out to have botrytis. I am therefore keeping an overly paranoid overly close watch on her. Like I don't take many photos but I am checking all the bud sides, every cola stem, gently exploring inside the plant. This is how I have come to notice the frost. From the outside it is not impressive, however when you move a couple of colas gently apart you can see it is absolutely packed and I mean PACKED. The only thing you can smell in the tent is Bertha. There are thirteen cannabis plants, dozens of basils and chamomiles, and karen is 2 days older than Bertha and quite significantly more massive... dripping with frost and a really strong smell. Yet when you open the tent literally all you can smell is Bertha. It smells exactly like Barratt Refreshers candy.

Congrats on the harvest! 👏 With that amazing smell you are talking about I'm so curious about the smoke report. Even with the issues I believe Berth will surprise you. Wishing you luck on a good drying and curing!

@MedicineMaker, The yield wont be surprising. Well under 10g I reckon. Still curious to the taste because if it's really good I might give Big Bang a second chance in the future.

UnorthadoxDudecommented2 years ago
@Breadandbuds, I check her several times every day for nanners, I am paranoid because of her problems. She is not strong, but she is trying her very best bless her. She has such a distinct look that I wonder if I have a strange pheno as well as the rough grow. She is not far now, I am actively checking trichs every day. The top of the plant looks to be 1-2 weeks more mature than the least mature cola. I am not sure whether to wait until the youngest buds are ready, or to chop in part. The other issue is that the older buds are foxtailing like crazy now... so she is not making fat buds just increasingly long and thin ones. Trichomes on the buds most mature (older growth with dark pistils) is I would say somewhere like 20% milky, 80% cloudy. Elsewhere the youngest looking buds are barely 30% milky. I could quite easily chop the top colas now, but I am going to let her trundle along.

UnorthadoxDudecommentedweek 112 years ago
She's had about three days now and has shrunk and shrivelled enough that I can clearly see the buds. Very very disappointing, every bud is just a thin foxtail all over the plant. I think I will be luck to end up with 5g dry. The smell of chlorophyll is overpowering at the moment but that is mostly coming from the leaves as it was not wet trimmed. There has never been a smell of grass as yet. Under the cholorform I can still smell her and if you touch a bud it smells really strong. So far so good. as she is drying out I am struggling to maintain the humidity. I have the box completely sealed yet it doesn't seem to go above 47% RH. I am tempted to spary a mister one time on the bottom of the box but I also don't know if it is wise. I am hoping the untrimmed dry will help slow things and protect what little bud is there.
