Got the tent all tidied up from last grow and happily curing, so onto trying autos! I've got bigger plans for the future, but want to get a feel for what it's like and had the seed and some leftover purple cow indicanja leftover from Lady Sybs. Still in her germ pot, but ready to get right to it once she gets a little bigger. Light dimmed to 25% but using the side bars more this go... letting her get a little warmer than the low 70s Fahrenheit I ran last go, as I'm learning more about LEDs. Figure I'll 24 hour it till veg, stepping down to 20/4 and 18/6 at veg and flower. But as always, the lady says what she likes. I'm just gonna try and meet it.
Truckin' along, so far so good. I really love this stage, so much change so fast. Leaves popping out fat and healthy and she seems to be tolerating the higher temps just fine. Counting nodes now, figure I'll be topping or FIMing in the next few days, haven't decided which. Cotyledons have already shriveled to the point of coming off with a gentle flick - much earlier than my last grow, which was a photo. But everything else seems quite secure and alive.
Well, she went and had herself a little stretch and sprouted pistils on me in the blink of an eye, so I guess I'm gonna forgo topping and just watch how this one grows au natural to get a feel for autos (I've got future projects germing in the back of my head). Her cotys fell off pretty fast, with nothing but a gentle flick of the finger. Top dressed with a bit more soil... broke af atm so just threw in a gallon I'd kept from Lady Sybs. Still not using any additional nutes except the purple cow soil and a weekly spray of purecrop1. The winter storm going on outside has humidity down stupid low (25% outside) and I'm not set up with a humidifier (low humidity is way outside the norm for my region) so I'm struggling with that a little.
Changed my mind last minute as one do, and threw the scrog up over her. I've had conflicting advice, and realize many think it's pointless with an auto, but I'm going to anyway. It'll give support when/if she gets heavy.... and it keeps me from picking at her, lol. Started pushing very light nutrients (half dose of the FF stuff I still have leftover) since her first serrated leaves have started going yellow. I expect them to, but kinda use them as my turkey timer. Raised the light another 8"ish inches and using the side lights to push a little extra as temps allow - they get pretty warm. I'm letting her go warmer this run, but still trying to keep it below 84F. She got suddenly thirsty so I gave her a good watering a day ahead of schedule, she perked right back up in an hour.
Between work, life, and stretch, the week has been a bit of a blur. Laughing at myself for being outpaced by a plant... again. This was more than I was expecting so fast, but I guess the math scans. Accounting for the three inches of soil I dressed her with, she's put on 14 inches in 14 days. I should probably not measure from the top of the soil when I know I'm going to change it. Grow and learn, lol. I don't know if the scrog is doing anything for me aside from keeping me from picking at her, but it works at that anyway. She's getting thirstier and hungrier, droopy 2 days after 3/4 gallon water, minor light spots on fan tips. Half dose gb/tb 3 times this week, quarter dose cal mag every time as well. Maybe it's not the best stuff, but it's what I've got and I'm eating cup noodles this week too, ha. We can suffer in solidarity. The buds are forming very satisfactorily, hairy af. Slight purpling in some upper fan stems. I wonder if this might indicate some later coloration? She looks otherwise healthy to me, but I've really no clue what she's 'supposed' to look like.
Going bloomingly. Retucked her lateral branches in the scrog a bit to open her up a little. Stretching seems to have completely stopped, while buds are stacking and fattening. Trichs visible to the naked eye. Adding 2 tsp/ week unsulphured blackstrap molasses into the diet, on alternating water days - current schedule is half nutes, RO water, half nutes, molasses. Smell is coming in pretty strong, earthy and piney. Good old smells that bring a smile to my riotgrrl heart. Darkening at the tips of leaves, but doesn't look serious. Start of fade maybe? Was shocked to notice my mechanical light timer was in fact set to 20/4 all this time, not 18/6. I must have been stoned when I did that. >.< Oh well, didn't seem to hurt her any so I'll just leave it be and edit my previous entries to reflect actual light times.
Stacking up, getting fat. Showing deficiencies in mid range leaves - I *think* is potassium, and maybe a little cal/mag. It makes sense in my head that I was too shy with nutes when she was hitting her stretch, and also I hadn't realized that plants grown under LED had additional needs. So upping the food, hoping I haven't done too much harm but I'm not sure what the comparison would be. Her buds are fattening, even the lowers look like happy little trees soon filling many happy little bowls. Becoming glad that I missed my topping window, being able to watch the natural (well, "natural" for a bred auto in a human driven environment) barely fettered structural development of her. Stank is amping up - garlicy earth? Kind of meaty? But gassy. Like a mushroom burger at a truck rally. But when I rub the stem or give a bud a little squeeze, it's all lemon pinesol. Laughing to myself that sometimes the answers really are calmag and two more weeks. Hands have been messing with me this week and I can't get a good picture of the trichs, but seeing mostly milky with a few glassies. I'll take her to 11 if needed, been retroactively disappointed in myself suspecting I really should have given the mxop a little more time.
Belatedly treated my spotted leaves with doubled up nutes and a shot of cal mag. They'll never be pristine again but the damage seems to have been curbed - the crumbled edges come from me gently hand rubbing off the dead and dried bits, so I can gauge how fast the drying was spreading. It seems to have halted, and I've no complaints on bud development. She's coming up lush and kush with buds and bouquet swelling. Hoping to chop next week but we'll see how she goes. Almost completely milky trichs now but I want that sweet, honeyed amber.
Last week last weeking. The smell shifted to surprisingly sweet with earthy tones... kinda like dirty honeysuckle. End of week trichs completely milky with only a sprinkling of amber, which I'm harvesting at day 72 as I want a good motivational/ social smoke.
Harvested at day 71, all milky trichs but little amber as I decided I want a good motivational weed. Super uplifting, anxiety melts away and is replaced by the next giggle at life. A surprising sweetness is impossible to ignore, juicy and tropical like mangos, but that good old pinesol stank is all over it too.
@DotMinatrix, im sure your be fine you last grow looked great 💪
autos are easy just try not to stress to much as the life cycle is short and u dont want to slow down growth 👍
@Anonymous_2022, thank you! Haha I'm actually more nervous this time than my first grow. I've heard autos are persnickety and now that I've got a good grow, a problem one will hurt more haha.
Hey @dotminatrix, great diary!
Thanks a bunch for growing our AK Auto, and sharing this diary with us :)
We hope that it was a nice experience, and that you enjoy the harvest!
Have a nice weekend
@Fast_Buds, In fact I had a marvelous weekend, thanks to this likely lass. I got the seed as a freebie from a NASC purchase - Can you verify it's from y'all? I regret not taking this chick more seriously and researched her needs more as my first attempt at growing an auto, but I'd love to give this strain another grow with renewed vigor. I'm a very new grower but an old 'head, and damned if this crop hasn't gotten me feeling green again myself!
