For my first grow in 3 years I've decided to give Royal Queen Seeds' new Epsilon F1 a try.
Excited to see how she grows.
The seed was germinated in between paper towels and then put into the air pot.
The medium is Canna Coco Coir. A heat mat and tube heater, both controlled by an Inkbird, are in the tent to help keep the air pot warm.
Nutrients are Green House Feeding's Hybrids powder during vegetation with their Booster powder added during flowering. I have some calcium powder and some Canna Mono Magnesium on hand if needed.
I want to keep the nutrients as simple as possible.
She will be given tap water throughout the grow.
Fingers crossed that it goes well.
Update: She has emerged with vigour 3 days after germination and being placed in the Air Pot.
8 days since germination and the Epsilon F1 has burst into life with impressive vigour.
GHF Hybrids powder was mixed at a rate of 0.3g per litre.
She was fed twice. 500ml of tap water containing powder diluted to 400ppm @ pH 5.9.
She was also given 500ml of tap water (230 ppm) plus 1/2 ml per l of magnesium in between main feeds @ pH 5.9
Added a Co2 bag to the tent.
Fed on day 9 with 1.5L @ 480ppm, pH 5.9.
Run off measured immediately at 690ppm
She is growing very quickly.
Nutrient powder is mixed at the recommended dose of 0.7 grams per litre and then diluted down to 560 ppm.
Added at PH 6.4.
Also adding Moonshine Hydroponics liquid nutrient enhancer at 1 ml/L.
Practicing fertigation with Coco coir.
Great progress from a plant that emerged only 20 days ago. You blink and she has grown another cm!
Powdered nutrients are being mixed at 0.7 g/L and diluted down to 650 ppm.
Fertigation seems to be going well. Run off from the Coco is +/- 100 ppm of what goes in. She is being given 800 ml daily. I might up that to twice daily as we approach flower.
And we're in flower!
Big stretch in the latter part of the last week.
The plant looks happy and healthy. RQS have really done well with this strain. She has sprinted to this point and should get to the finish in style too.
I'm using GHF's Booster in addition to their Hybrids powder.
Hybrids: 0.7 g/L
Booster: 0.3 g/L
Fertigation is giving run off ppm below what's going in by some margin but the plant looks great so I'm not going to change anything for now other than continue gradually upping the ppm of the input.
Using tap water (250 ppm) pH adjusted down to 6.1.
She is well into flower now with a big stretch again this week, over 25 cm. She is now 80 cm tall.
Epsilon F1 is by far the fastest growing cannabis plant I have grown. Also the easiest.
The buds are beginning to fill out nicely and there is a complex but very nice smell coming from her. The smell is mild.
Nutrient mix this week:
Hybrids: 0.6 g/L
Booster: 0.4 g/L
Run off ppm is still under what I give her but has stabilised around 200 ppm under.
The stretch has ended now and at 95cm she has developed into a tall girl with long side limbs easily filling the 0.7 sq/m tent. Along with the long thin leaves, this tallness may be the sativa genetics coming through on this plant.
I did a little defoliation, taking some of the larger leaves from lower down in the plant and a few from further up the stem and branches that were shading the bud. I may take more off but not many more. She has relatively long distances between nodes on the stem and has a full canopy up top.
Fertigation signalled that it may be the end of the stretch because the run off ppms rose to just over 1100 for a couple of days however the temperature during the day and night is also higher and more uniform so she is sucking up more water now too.
Nutrients this week:
Hybrids: 0.5 g/L
Booster: 0.5 g/L
I'm keeping the EC below approximately 1.9 but gradually rebalancing the nutrients by reducing the Hybrids powder and increasing the Booster content when mixing up a batch.
There's a beautiful smell developing with a hint of citrus.
She is maturing nicely. The buds are swelling and giving off a very mild aroma unless you touch the bud. Then she leaves a beautiful scent on your fingers which is not mild at all and quite complex.
Nutrient mix this week is:
Hybrids: 0.4 g/L
Booster: 0.6 g/L
She is being hand watered 2L every day with approximately 300ml run off.
Run off PPM this week has been equal to or up to 200 ppm over what is being fed. I'm keeping input EC around 1.7 (850 ppm) or slightly below.
I'm using tap water with approximately 250 ppm.
The finish line is in sight now albeit a week or two away. This Epsilon F1 has progressed at a rapid pace and with extreme vigour. All through the grow she has not missed a beat.
The pistils have quickly began to turn orange and the buds are really swelling up.
The trichomes are still mostly clear and glassy but given the rapid rate of change of this F1 variety I wouldn't be surprised to see a brown trichome appear in the next 7 days or so. At that point she will be cut down.
She is thirsty too right now so I've upped the water and tried to keep the input EC between 1.5 and 1.7 (750ppm to 850ppm)
Run off ppm was gradually rising to over 1100/EC 2.3. I did a light flush with just water at suitable pH to help bring the ppm down. Now I've raised the volume of input water to 3L per 24 hours which will hopefully keep the run off closer to the input and stop an excessive build up of salts. She gets 2L of feed in the morning and a further liter late in the day with the run off sucked up and measured each time.
Nutrient mix this week:
Hybrids: 0.4 g/L
Booster: 0.6 g/L
I'm on the cusp of starting final flush but may wait until the triches are getting cloudy.
Very close to harvest now.
~80% of the trichomes are cloudy.
~70% of the pistils are brown and turned in.
I started flushing 5 days ago with tap water and some of the main fan leaves are now yellowing.
Earlier last week there was evidence of new growth at very the top of the main cola which spawned some new pistils. I put this down to light stress so I moved the light further away.
I also changed the light schedule to 12/12 due mainly to the high temperatures we are experiencing at the moment, pushing temps in the tent to just over 30°C and the fact that my electricity bills over the last two months have been huge so I am happy to reduce that.
It is a case of hurry up and wait now.
Now that she is at peak maturity I've noticed that the smell is there but low key. I think I would be ok with growing this strain outside in a small pot in a garden or in a greenhouse with some odorous companion plants around and not worry too much about it not being stealthy. Obviously this is only a problem if you live in prohibitionland like I do.
This plant was a dream to grow. She never missed a beat throughout and proved to be quick growing and resilient. The seed sprouted faster than any others I've grown. She continued on how she started, reaching every growth milestone at record pace while changing and stretching faster than I expected.
Highly recommended for growers who want a strain that gives off little smell during flowering. The perfect stealthy strain for indoor and outdoor growers in prohibition states and countries.
I was keeping a close eye on the trichomes and pistils and decided to cut her down when most of the trichomes were cloudy.
Smoke report to come.
Looking good pal! Just been catching up on U.K. 420 and see you said you had a diary on the go over hear. My next grow is RQS Apollo F1. I will follow along ✌️
Loving the great notes - keep it up!
If you have been reasonable with the feeding, then you can just gradually reduce the nutrient strength. I just switched to the Pour-Through method for monitoring feeding. Result? I was absolutely overfeeding and have been flushing like crazy.
@NegotiatedBubble, Thanks. I was tapering off the nutrients gradually but the plant is way ahead of me and changing so quickly that I started flushing proper today.
95cm!!! I have come to this to try to get some idea what to expect from my current run. All 6 have exceeded 70cm one has exceeded 1m and they are 28 days old.
