How do i know when to harvest, i know to look for amber tricomes, but are there any other clear signs?

The bright yellow pistils that protrude from the stigma, turn brown/red/orange over time, as the plant develops through flowers, new cycles will produce fresh white pistils, and with each cycle the plant will produce fewer and fewer new ones each time until gradually you will notice hardly any, all will be brown red-orange, this is generally what I use to let me know when the plant is ready to have its trichomes checked. Using this it's pretty hard to miss the cue.

im considering harvesting in 2 runs… since im growing outdoors and i see most of the main colas are ready or almost ready but most of the side branches has not gotten enough light, so removing the main colas to get other parts of plants more light, but how do i go about it?

I've done this before and the benefits are negligible at best, i would just let the whole plant finish on it's own.If you only have a couple more weeks left just let them ride it out and harvest at one time.I wouldn't recommend 2 runs to dry unless you lack space to do them all at once.
