This is my very first grow, and I decided to go with the General Hydroponics 6-part nutrient feeding schedule... because I don't know any better. Anyway, done is done and we're going to keep plowing forward! I used the paper towel method, and as soon as the seeds popped their tap roots I moved them to rockwool cubes to finish sprouting and take hold. I'm growing in an AC Infinity Advanced 2x4 Grow Tent kit and just got my 4.5L humidifier in today. My ambient room temps have been steady around 70-71F and a constant 55% RH. My Controller 69 is set to 0.6kpa and with the humidifier in, we're getting closer. I'm still learning as I go and I will consider this first grow a learning experience ^_^
Last note, I'm going full dwc. I bought the Vevor rdwc buckets w/ airstones, but wish I'd just made them myself. The external reservoir for the system leaked from the water level gauge, so I can't use it. I ended up just unhooking everything except the airstones. Much easier this way, even if it's more labor-intensive.
Wk2 Day 10: Update, one of the seeds' taproot broke away from the seed, so I started another seed in the paper towel... #growingpains [This seed ended up being a dud; it opened but nothing came out.]
UPDATE: So, the first two seeds I listed here ended up dying a few days later, and I seeded 2 new Zkittlez seeds from Seedbank.com. I decided to change my approach this time. Instead of the paper towel method, I decided to sow the seeds directly in their medium. Instead of rockwool, I decided to pick up some promix and use that instead. Also, instead of placing them directly in their buckets, I've changed it to a double solo cup method. I will update you with some pictures of how it works later, but basically, it's like this:
1. Buy an off brand solo cup that's round, and then buy the name-brand solo cup that's got a square bottom. This is the best way I've found to achieve the gap you want because we're keeping it DWC.
2. Using a razor blade (box cutter, etc.) just shave off some holes in the bottom of one of your cups (you want 4 holes, check pictures for examples), I usually do 4, one per side of the cup. Once your holes are cut, drop that cup (empty) inside the cup it's going to rest in for the next few weeks (these are totally reusable btw). Now that you have the cups inside one another, pour some pH-balanced water into the cups until the water barely sits inside the inside cup. You want the promix to be able to wick the water up.
3. Fill the "grow cup" where your seed will go with promix and sow your seed [after you soak them or whatever method you want to use.. I decided to just sow the seeds directly after a 12hr soak) juuuuust under the surface of the promix (you could even just drop the seed on the promix and then cover it lightly with the mix lol)
4. Put the grow cup inside of the "watering cup", and you should have about an inch difference between the two cups because of the different shapes. The promix will wick up the water, and between that and the nutrients the seeds already have, you won't have to water again until you're in the veg stage.
This is the hardest part. Don't mess with the seeds. I killed the first two because I got impatient lol.
5. What we're waiting for here is the plants to poke their roots out of the grow cup and into the watering cup. It's time to start feeding them nutrients as soon as that happens. Just before the plants get root-bound from being in a small space, just take the grow cup out of the watering cup, and then drop it in the lid of whatever dwc system you have.
So that's where we are now. Today is day 16 of germination and the girls are looking great. Marge is stunted a little because of an unfortunate overwatering, but she pulled through!
Don't forget, they don't count if they're autos. I forget some idiot told me that a long time ago lol. Him and some loser one armed guy, not worth even remembering his name, that you could do this brother you got this, and soon you will have an entire room dedicated for it! (Evil laugh)
