So today marks the start of week 6! Pictures from day 42. This has been my favourite week so far. Not a lot to report other than FLOWERING! We had signs of flowering last week but now the bud sites are clear to see and Iā€™m so happy that there seems to be a lot of them! Sticky orange seems to be about a week behind purple skunk in terms of flowering. Theyā€™ve both continued to grow and we have how reached height capacity in the tent. So Iā€™ve had to LST the main stem and hopefully this will give them more room to grow a couple of inches. Never thought Iā€™d say this but I hope they donā€™t grow too much more. Also defoliated them really gradually this week.. just a few leaves every few days to not stress them too much. Theyā€™ve taken it well. Iā€™ve only been watering once a week and up to now, this has been plenty. But today when I lifted the pots they felt completely dry and I noticed a couple of the bottom branches had started to go a little bit limp. So from now on Iā€™ll keep a much closer eye on their water levels and figure how much extra theyā€™re going to need. Possibly dried out quicker due to the dehumidifier I added last week.. who knows! Iā€™ve switched from grow to bloom nutrients today to fatten the buds up as much as possible! Smell is manageable atm. The filter in the dehumidifier and leaving the window wide open in the lung room is doing the trick for now. Other than defoliating and a bit of LST Iā€™ve just really let them do their thing again this week. Things are still going way better than expected for my first try.

@Budz_Bunny, hi there thanks so much for the info. I have always thought there is a good chance I will need to upgrade those lights (I have 2- one for each plant) and they donā€™t have different settings or strengths. They were advertised as seeding/growing/flowering and at the time I set up, money was limited and the price was pretty great so I decided to go for it and hope for the best! I am thinking of adding a little dehumidifier in the next couple of weeks to avoid a mould problem. I went into this with zero expectations but now Iā€™ve seen how well they seem to be doing, I would be devastated if something went wrong lol. But I really appreciate the advice so Thankyou :)

Hi Buddy You can cut off the lower leaves without having a bad conscience, it will soon get too little light anyway, but don't cut off too many leaves, I would cut off a maximum of 6 per plant so that it doesn't have too much stress and the large leaves that cover the side shoots can also be removed bit by bit as you have enough mass. Or guide the side shoots past the leaves. Carefully bend the tip down so that the side shoots grow even more because the tip is no longer the highest point. Once they have passed the leaves, simply loosen them again and allow them to grow normally. It is better to bend down a little more each day and pre-bend the shoots with your fingers (warm them up)

@AcidBurn_40, thankyou for the advice :) Iā€™m a little worried about causing any further stress as this morning, the nutrient burn on one plant seems to have gotten worse. Iā€™ll keep an eye on them for the next few days (done a big flush today) and as long as I can see growth and a few more healthy leaves sprout, I will defoliate slightly to give them more room. Iā€™ve tucked a few leaves and manipulated a few stems like you advised so fingers crossed!

You have a.Nitrogen toxicity, this slows growth alot, also, do not feed until run off, unless growing in coco coir. The soil need oxygen and watering prevents it from getting into the roots... wait until the soil is dry then feed only water for 2 weeks or until a lighter green. Feed alot less water to help airation.

@OrganicLivingSoil, brilliant thankyou. I guess if Iā€™d known this last week I could have avoided any real damage. Iā€™m guessing no nutrients were needed at all last week annd I should have just let the soil do its thing for annother couple of weeks. Every days a learning day here!

@Crownlaura, Nitrogen builds up in the tips of leaves, causing darker tips, downward curling and slower growth. looks fine now, just check the PH of each watering, 6.2 to 6.8 is perfect and will allow all nutrients to become available to plant.
Crownlaura
Crownlaura
@OrganicLivingSoil, hi Thankyou for your advice. Can I ask what you saw to indicate the nitrogen toxicity? Iā€™m not doubting you at all (my week 4 pictures show you are 100% right!) but in week 3 pictures, my amateur eyes did not notice any signs at all.

So, bit of an update on sticky orange. The nutrient burn looked slightly worse this morning but only on the brand new top leaves. So Iā€™ve put her in the bath and given her 2 good flushes with luke warm water. PH from the run off is 5.9. Leaving her in the bath for half an hour and giving her a good shake every few minutes to get as much water out as I can - I donā€™t want to replace nute burn with an overwater issue! Purple skunk seems happy so my conclusion is that S/O doesnā€™t need half as many nutrients as P/S. taking a plant out of the tent has given me space to give purple skunk a good inspection and boy are her branches getting thick!

First diary error - the smell! The smell has been really mild when you walk into the room where the tent is but today (day21), Iā€™ve been able to smell from across the hallway:/
