I'm back – and it's time to celebrate. Here in Germany, weed will be legalised in a few weeks – including growing it at home. Everything will be so much more relaxed. I'm saving up for a bigger tent.
As a prelude, however, a cultivation in the usual small tent. The genetics is Amnesi-K Lemon, which I won in a Kannabia competition. Many thanks once again! It’s supposed to make you laugh a lot. I'm looking forward to experiencing the effects. And I'm also a bit excited because it's my first plant that isn't an automatic.
Two other things are new: I'm using the soil mixed and prepared by love_to_grow, which he kindly gave me as a present. This reduces any fertilising to a minimum. The soil smells very nice! I'm really looking forward to seeing how the grow turns out. Go have a look at his profile; he is currently testing the soil with several cloned plants in order to perfect it. His experimental grows are always insightful.
As such living soil only works in larger containers, I have invested in a pot with automatic watering system that holds 60 litres of soil. Also new: a cultivation box for seedlings with LED lighting, which was available very cheaply from a discounter last week. Are they already preparing for legalisation?
The seed popped after 6 days.

As soon as the roots had grown through the plug – about 9 days after planting the seed – I transferred the little plant to its final destination, a huge self-watering pot by Lechuza. The top layer is not the super soil from love_to_grow, as it is very rich in nutrients and probably too "hot" for young plants. I used some standard soil made for growing herbs, which contains few nutrients. Before planting the plug, I sprinkled "Living Organics" from Green Buzz Nutrients to promote root growth.
The plant looks quite lost in its huge pot! But hopefully, that this will change soon.
Our new friend's first week was uneventful. I only gave her water occasionally and a tiny sip of "More Roots" because the top layer of soil is low in nutrients. (Once her roots have grown into the living soil, I don't plan to add anything extra). She looks perfect.
I think by now, the roots must have reached the deeper level that contains the living soil. That's why I only added water about every second or third day. The plant looks very pretty, if you ask me. It's fun to check on her in the morning.
Today was the day! Cutting off the top always feels a little cruel, but I'm sure she will do fine. She seems to love her environment so far.
I left only two growth tips and hope she'll pour all her strength into them. I also left all the leaves for now.
As a small compensation I gave her some foliar spray by GBN.
My tries with LST were not too successful in the past, let's see what I can do with these little tent pegs.
Mulch to conserve water and keep flies away. And to use that wonderful word MULCH. Mulch mulch mulch.
The week was uneventful. Her leaves are still looking great, she seems to have everything she needs. The amount of water she gets has about doubled.
It's a bit hard to write about her size, since I'm bending the upper growth tips. But topping definitely has slowed her down a bit.
I'm wondering weather I should top her again and when to change the light. For now, topping once is maybe enough; I don't want to wait too long for buds.
Probably another week of growth before switching? Tips are welcome.
Same day edit: I think I will find out how sturdy this plant is after all. While checking the plant in the evening, I noticed that I must have broken one of the two main twigs... The breach was already dried when I took a look. So in a desperate attempt, I made two fresh cuts, dipped them in some GBN Fast Start Gel and taped them together. Hope dies last, after all.
Last week was more eventful than I had hoped for. After I had bent the two intended main branches with LST in the morning, I realised in the evening that one of the branches had broken through. Unfortunately, nothing could be saved. I thought about how I could still achieve an acceptable harvest and ultimately decided to top each of the three remaining branches again. Quite a lot of stress for this poor plant! I actually wanted to bring it to maturity as quickly as possible, but now it will grow for at least another week until I change the light.
Apart from that, it looks great. Even through all this stress, she grew a lot. She just seems to love the soil. I only add water.
I'm going to switch her tomorrow, day 40.
I switched her last week. Some tips started to get yellow, so I have to change something soon. I'll consult the soil Guru and, of course, am open for suggestions!
Edit: It seems CalMag and PhDown did the trick!
I'm late with updating! Flowering will start very soon. The remaining yellow tips are on older leaves - it was a lack of CalMag and/or a too high pH that caused the trouble. She's doing fine now.
The buds are forming rapidly.
Did some defoliation and lst, nothing more.
And long live the international revolutionary fighting day of the working class!
As we say where I come from. :)
I did literally nothing and she still shows no sign of deficiencies. The buds are bulking up. It's a breeze!
Defoliated a lot on my free day. There are so many bud sites and they did not get enough light. I also removed some small twigs at the bottom - should have done that earlier, they took energy to produce but will not have any buds due to the lack of light.
I did nothing, not even water her in the last days, since the pot is doing that by itself. So this report is a little short...
The buds grow nicely, though.
I thought the nutrients might have been not enough in the last week and added some from Green Buzz. Not sure if related, but the buds grew in size. I'm going to do the same again next week and then I think it should be time to get a bud under my microscope.
Only water for her now. The buds grew a little bit, but are ripening mostly. I will start checking the trichome development every second day from now on. Many are still clear and I only found one or two amber coloured. I'm aiming for about 20% amber.
90 days now - photoperiodic plants are not for the impatient grower!
Harvested on the 94th day, since many trichomes turned amber. Since I didn't have time to wet trim, I just removed some of the bigger leaves and hung it upside down. So, no wet trim weight. Very curious though; I'm really bad at estimating.
There are many buds, but the buds did not grew especially big - as I am used to with sativa plants. The smell is intense and everything I left on the plant is covered in trichomes.
Things I want to remember for my next grow:
1. Cut the small thin twigs on the bottom early.
2. Check the trichomes often, since they change fast.
I loved growing in the living soil that love_to_grow prepared! When he goes official, I'm definitely going to buy his stuff. It was so relaxing to just watch this plant grow without having to worry.
I will try to re-activate this soil (hopefully with his help?) for the grow after next.
