First Grow - Triple Automatic: Purple Haze, Apple Fritter, Purple CousKush
Alright, here we go!
First ever grow, absolutely no experience, could not manage to keep succulents or cacti alive in the past so let's see how this works. I did read alot and watched youtube videos, hope it helps.
I'm growing in my cellar where it is a stable 16-17° with 56% humidity. I will find out if the LED inside the growbox is enough to keep the temperature above 20°C, else I will turn on an additional electrical heating.
I threw the seeds for 24h in a waterglass, then in jiffys with a heating mat under them, set to 23°C (73,4°F).
I counted the days from when I first saw the seedlings emerging from the soil.
Week 2 it is. Not sure if they are doing really good, but they grow. Second set of leafs out, first real leaf about to build I guess (?).
Unsure with the light, should I still go with ~200-300PPFD as recommended for seedling stage, or rather up to 400-500ish for early growth? Since they don't seem to stretch to much, I'm going with a couple of more days with around 300. Since I have no dimmer on my light it is more around 330 to 350, depending on where I measure.
Watered a bit on Day 11 to keep humidy around 70% because the first 1.5inches/5cm were really dry, around 400-500ml per plant.
The leafs seem slightly yellowy, not so dark green. Could be a bit nutrient burn because I likely chose not the ideal substrate (Plagron Grow Mix, rather strong pre-fertilized. It's supposed to be enough fertilizer in there for the first 3 weeks of veg)?
Week 2 and still alive, I'm kinda suprised. They also grow quite a bit the last few days, impressive (to me).
I am currently trying to keep the right VPD for early veg.
RH is around 75ish if the air vent is off, which is borderline in the VPD chart at 24-25°C. I want it slightly lower because I just learned about mildew and want to avoid it of course! Unfortunately it drops to 50% when I turn on the air vent. So I tried to play around a bit over night with turning the vent on every hour for 15mins (mechanical timer) or so, which led to a rollercoaster curve between 50 and 75%. Not sure but I think the plants don't really like that either. So I turned it off this morning and put an old passive dehumidifier which my wife had lying around for her car in the tent (this simple plastic containers with a bag of dry pellets inside). I will observe and see what it does.
Last watering was 3 days ago with around 400ml each plant, substrate still seems moist an inch under the surface, I will wait a bit more.
The leafs look a bit pale and the tips slightly yellowy and weak, could it be lightburn (currently 400ppfd) or windburn? I probably let the fan run too long/too strong for a while. I turned it off for now for the next hours.
Going good so far. Purple Haze (top middle) and Purple CousKush (bottom right) have developed great as far as I can tell. Their stem is a bit thicker and the leafs quite packed, not sure if that is good or if I should raise the light a bit.
The Apple Fritter (bottom left) is a bit behind, only one with a thinner stem. Could it be because I treated them rather early in seedling stage with Neem Oil? The Apple Fritter was the first one I watered with the Neem Oil water, so it could have gotten the most, but that's only a wild guess. Could be simply genetics aswell, although I though a "modern" strain like Apple Fritter would outperform the others, but what do I know?!?
Still haven't watered them after the initial one (1st of May with Neem Oil) after planting them in the big pots. Substrate still seems slightly damp an inch under surface (finger test) and the pots are still heavy.
The Neem Oil seemed to do the trick with the gnats, feels like there aren't any new ones, haven't seen one in 2-3 days-
Week 4 day 1. Plants seem to be doing good. Purple Haze has a yellow leaf tip, I can only guess it's from making contact with the pot all the time.
Since it's my first grow I'm uncertain if I should try LST, or go completely without stress to learn what and see what yield and quality I get without, so I can compare it to different methods of training in later grows.
Just yesterday I gave em each around 600ml of water with Plagron Power Roots after 10 days of not watering! They didn't show signs of underwatering yet but I felt it was a good time.
Update Day 26: Getting bigger and more beautiful every day. I defoliated 1-2 of the lower leafs on each plant to ensure airflow. Have a bit high humidity (65%ish) due to the weather outside (rainy and humid), fan and vent on full power. Apple Fritter surpassed the others in size, Purple CousKush is a bit behind.
2 Days ago I watered them with a bit of Power roots and half of recommended Plagron Bloom in 600ml water for each plant (was probably wrong since they aren't blooming yet...), but no signs of nutrient burn or anything so far.
They keep growing and started flowering.
The Apple Fritter developed a ball (I think - picture with red circle) a few days ago, I removed it and can only hope no further ones appear.
It might have had a light issue during night time once, that would perhaps explain it. Gonna watch it closesly and hope it's not a genetical issue.
As a total newbie I was a bit furious about the many diaries that skipped so many weeks in flower, but I get it now. There isn't really much (visually) happening.
What have I done the last two weeks:
Mainly trying to compensate the small size of my Purple Kush (35cm) first with a Trellix Net and LST on the top bud of the way higher grown Apple Fritter (55cm) to even out light. I was afraid that might ruin the top bud of the Apple Fritter so instead I lifted the Purple Kush up on another pot, now they're about even and get the same light.
I fed (perhaps too much on the lower end) with Plagron Terra Bloom and Power Roots. Quite some lower leafs are turning yellow. I also lowered PH from 6.4 to around 6.
The picture shows my lousy attempt to bend down the top bud of the apple fritter.
