[FAILED] Afberry (Automatic) - Purple City Genetics
In only 24 hours a tiny root did develop, so i took her out of the glas and put her in soil. Basically the next day she made it out the soil, as you can see in the photo.
I wanted to try a small breeder/brand, i thought the collection of Purple City Genetics did sound quite good, so i had to try them. I heared a little bit about them, and what i did hear was very positive.
The first week of the Afberry was quite rainy, so i did keep her under the growlight for about 90% of the time.
I think she is quite a slow one growthwise. But i'm hopeful, that the next week will be better.
I did water her with about 1l of water and 4ml/l BioBizz Root-Juice. I think right now it is a little too wet, i'm quite sure i havbe overdone it. But we will see.
Well, i don't know, but she is lacking behind. I've seen some fungus gnats on the soil, this is why i did use nematodes. So maybe her slow growth is caused by the gnats, that are - hopefully - soon dead. But because of that, i have to take care, that the top of the soil is quite moist. Hope she doesn't dislike that. What i learned in the past few days is, that i should only water the plant in the morning.
Something i noticed is, that she doesn't seem to like standing in the sun for too long. So i'm keeping here under the grow light most of the time. Today she was right in the sun for 90 minutes. That didn't make here unhappy as it seems.
I'm not happy with her progress, i actually thought, that she is going to be a plant with very good growth. Maybe i did expected a little too much of a plant from Purple City Genetics. 😥 I also gave one of the three seedlings i ordered to a friend, but that seed didn't germinate.
We are going to see, if she just has a little bit of slow start, and after that is just growing and growing. 🙏
There ist not very much to tell.
Finally had to put her much higher, because compared to my other plant, she is just tiny. But there was some groth, so she is 20cm tall right now.
Last week i did write about fungus gnats. Haven't seen one in days. So the nematodes killed them off. I'm happy. This is way i'm going to use nematodes as prevention on the beginning of my next grow. I do hope, that this was the root-cause, why she did not develop as fast as i thought she would. But i also did take a look to a lot more growdiaries, and honestly, there are many people with tinier plants at that stage. So i probably shouldn't complain, because there are many variables, that i just can't control right now without a grow tent.
Right now i'm thinking about toping the plant, but i probably won't because i just want to see how the plants are growing quite normal with minimal LST.
So, last week i said, that i wouldn't topp her, but i did it anyways. I was just too curoius and learning from my other plant, that it is more beneficial, that the branches are more or less the same height, so the decision was made. And it looks like she took it quite well. I also did bent the leafes and branches, so that they are all exposed to the light. I do hope, that they will grow more or less in the same speed, so that there aren't any differences in height.
But, i also did fuck up in the last week. I did overwater her. I could see it on her leafes for about 2 days, that she didn't liked it. Also i had some runoff. So, i won't water her until the pot is significantly lighter as it is right now. Because the pot is really heavy in the moment. Instead of watering her with 1,5l i just should have used 200ml, so that the top is moist again.
Well, i'm still learning, but i'm getting better in growing and realising the mistakes i made.
Still, this week was the best week in growth with here, she gained over 10cm in height, although i did top her! But i think i have seen, that she might have started preflower. I really hope, that she doesn't start flowering this week, because she is just too small right now. But well see.
That's it for this week.
Growth was quite good this week. I also did put her in the direct sun on two afternoons this week.
The pot is so heavy, because i had overwatered the pot in the first few weeks. So right now i just watered the top a little bit 2 times with about 150ml of pure water. My hope is, that she grows more roots and taps into the moist soil on the bottom of the pot. I'll give her a few more days, until she gets watered with 1l of water again.
Preflowering was already on its way in the last week, now i think, that she may build her first buds in this week? So from here on out i would say she is in the flowering stage. Quite curious, how she is developing.
Growth is good; the plant is looking very green and healthy.
BUT: She started to develop male characteristics, which is quite bad. So, I thought about what to do. The thing is, I don't want to have to check on the plant every day. So, my solution is to put her in quarantine in my cellar. I bought a cheap lamp, and she’s going to stay there for the rest of her life. 😀
I’ll probably help her pollinate the flowers, and I’m going to harvest the seeds when she’s done. It is what it is. I’ll try to use some of the seeds and see how the plants develop. I hope the seeds turn out well; if that’s the case, they’ll probably make nice presents for friends and family 😅
I’m unsure if I will continue this diary unless people are interested in seeing the development.
So, my first seed of PCG was not a good experience, but I have to be accountable because I made mistakes—especially overwatering her in the beginning and then underwatering just to be safe so that she wouldn’t develop root rot. I also stressed her at the same time with LST and topping. Additionally, I switched on the lights in the kitchen during some periods of the night when it should have been dark. I also put her in the sun on warm days, which she probably didn’t like so much... So, I’m responsible for the stress and, therefore, the poor performance and the hermaphroditism.
As I mentioned in the last update, I put her in quarantine, so she’s in my cellar. It’s quite cold down here, around 20 degrees Celsius.
My neighbor lent me a light she bought for her plants during the dark winters. I guess it’s about 40 watts—not much, but she seems to like it very much.
She looks very good, a healthy green (although it doesn’t look that way in the photos). She seems to like it there. I think she has a great canopy, and her branches are perfectly stretched, so everyone gets enough light. I’m quite happy with that.
One of the pollen sacs didn’t develop any pollen; it just fell off. So maybe I won’t have seeds. But I also tried spraying two nodes with colloidal silver, so maybe there will be seeds.
I think her buds look nice—they are very airy and tiny, but somewhat cute. I’m curious to see how she’s going to develop. For now, she’s staying under quarantine in my cellar.
I completely forgot to update this diary.
But actually there is not so much to tell about the plant right now. She is forming more buds. Nutrition was increased this week. I'm quite curious, how my full growsetup from AC Infinity is working for this plant.
Since the last report i used the polen two times and tried to polinate her buds. But i also tried to polinate one bud on my Wurlz F1, maybe something is happening.
I'm unsure, how long her flowering is going to take, i'm going to visit my family in about 3 weeks and won't be here for about two weeks. If she shouldn't be ready, i'll probably going to take her with me.
I really would like to buy a good camera and a good lens, to photograph the plants up close...
[I'm also going to increase the light to 20 hours.]
It is going downhill. The next pest is incoming. The plant lice are here, and they are doing damage. She really doesn't look good anymore, i had to get rid of some of her leaves. Because they were really infested with the lice and looked pretty bad. I did use a anti-pest-spray from Compo Bio, which is using organic compounts, to kill them off. But honestly, the plant is looking worse from day to day.
I really would like to see her getting better, but right now, i think, that she isn't recovering anymore. But we'll have to see. I do hope, that i get at least some seeds from her.
Honestly this grow was just problematic from the beginning. I have one Afberry seed left, probably going to use it in the grow that is going to start in january, because right now i want to try some different seeds next month.
Let’s keep it short: The grow has failed!
As I mentioned last week, there were some plant lice, so I had to spray the Afberry with Compo Bio Schädlingsfrei Plus AF, an organic pesticide.
It seems she couldn’t handle it anymore, and she looked worse the next day and continued to decline each day after that. Today, I had to cut her down and throw her in the trash. The smell of the buds was also quite bad, so there was nothing to save. What was interesting, though, is that she did produce some seeds, but they were still green.
I have one seed left (I gave one to a friend, but it didn’t even germinate), and I’m going to try it in my first grow next year. If that seed performs just as poorly, I’m done with it. Everything seemed to stress this plant—that’s ridiculous. Maybe I should try seeds from another batch of Afberry from Purple City Genetics, but honestly, I wouldn’t buy one right now because I’m really disappointed. 😒
