Second grow underway. Wanted to try growing two plants instead of one. Since I’m still growing in my 2x2, space is at a premium, so I will grow these plants in 3 gallon pots for their final home instead of 5 gallon like I used previously. I am also using a new light, which will necessitate a bit of a learning experience to figure out how to use it best. I am planning on more aggressively scrogging this time to keep the plant sizes under control and to hopefully increase my harvest of good buds and decrease the larf. Since I am changing a lot of variables, I will use two freebie seeds I got from seedsherenow.com. Seeds are Ethos Genetics (Gary Payton x Fishscale) x Grandpa’s Cookies #10 cross. Seeds are feminized so I should be good to go. Sowed seeds into peat pods soaked in Recharge on August 1. Both germinated on the 3rd. I had the light intensity higher than I probably wanted, and simultaneously too far away from the tops of the seedlings for the first couple days, so they both got a little stretchy. Roots emerged from the pods on the 7th, so I transplanted both seedlings to solo cups with Coast of Maine Stonington Blend with 5 tsp of grow dots in each. I also moved the light closer to 11” from canopy and turned the intensity lower. The seedlings looked much happier the next day, and I managed to turn the light back up. Current ppdf is around 200-250, which should be good for them now. Temp has been kept around 72-76 degrees F, and humidity was started at 68%, and was lowered to 65% after transplant to the solo cups. I am targeting keeping the vpd around 0.8 or lower for the moment. I anticipate transplanting to the final 3 gallon pots in about a week or so, and will post my next diary then.

Grew out the seedlings in solo cups for ten days, keeping the light lower at about 250 PPFD 11” over canopy. Watered once, only on the edges of the cup to encourage root growth. Plants had plenty of healthy, visible roots during transplant. Transplanted into 3 gallon pots with the same soil (CoM Stonington Blend). Added 10 g/gallon of grow dots for nutrition. Watered to runoff with water supplemented with cal mag and recharge. I experienced calcium deficiency in my first grow and read that for grows in coco, it’s good to supplement the first two weeks with some extra cal mag to try to cut off later deficiencies from the medium. I will feed with recharge weekly again, as that helped tremendously in my experience. I plan on scroging more aggressively this grow, and will top the fifth node and use some LST following “LBH’s famous scrog” tutorial on growweedeasy.com. Since I’m using grow dots, I plan on flipping my lights in four weeks as that is when the nutrition composition changes to flowering mix. That should give me plenty of time for training and growing out some nice healthy plants.

Topped both plants above the fourth node this week. Both seem to be recovering well, but one of the plants has shown some leaf edge curling since transplanting into the three gal pot. Research suggests this is caused by over watering, which is possible but I was under the impression this was not easy to do in coco, and I’ve watered once since transplanting. I will let her dry out more though and see how she reacts. My next goal is to let the new tops grow out a few inches, and then I will try bending and tying them down to make the plants bushier. I plan on vegging three more weeks, based on the timing of nutes from the grow dots, so I have time to take things patiently. Plants are 6” tall currently, and I’d like to have the next around 10” over the medium level if possible. I won’t push the LST bending though as that’s a new technique for me and I’d hate to over work one of them.

The girls quickly recovered from tipping and have exploded in growth this week it feels like. Both plants have some unique phenotypes that I’ve noticed so far. The one plant is a good two inches taller than the other, and her nodes are growing very tight to the main stem vertically rather than outwards and horizontal from the stem. I suspect this one will need some heavier pruning because more undergrowth will end up being shaded. She’s also growing some monster fan leaves, which are also helping to shade the undergrowth as well. The fan leaves are very sturdy and I fear trying to tuck them under will result in them snapping off, and I think that would be worse than getting a few more nodes some more light in veg. The other plant has a wild wavy edge phenotype going on, I think I’ve determined. I thought she was stressed from transplanting or overwatered or some combo, but even now when she’s dialed in and growing like a champ, all leaves and new growth are growing with wavy edges. It’s a fun thing, now that I know she’s not stressed :). She’s growing a lot wider than the other plant, so I think she should be easier to fill out the net than the other pheno once I get to that point. Both plants are very happy and are growing super vigorously. I’ve only watered them two times since I transplanted them, so this can be a testament to the power of not over watering your plants.

The girls continued to grow like gangbusters this week. They ended up growing too quickly for me to feel good about bending them down for LST, so I decided to just scrog, but much more aggressively this time. Put the net up two days ago, and started tucking the first tall tops this evening, three full weeks since transplanting into three gals. I also gave the plants a decent first defoliation today. I removed all of the tops in the bottom third or so, and removed most of the fan leaves in this area as well. I left the fan leaves if they were still getting light, but most were just blocking the air flow and looking sad. I need to keep the plants in check with the small growing area. Plants will veg for one more week, and next Saturday I will flip the lights to 12-12. During this week, I will keep all of the tops under the net.

Tucked tops every day this week. Started watering more frequently as the plants are drinking more and more. Watered with recharge once a week still. Gave both plants a heavy defoliation yesterday. I left the fan leaves as long as they were still attached to the main stems (sometimes they pop off easily, these are what I removed). I removed all developing nodes that were not already at canopy level, as the canopy is getting quite full from the continued scrog. Since I only have the one 2x2, I didn’t keep any clones. Flipped lights to flower today (12-12 light cycle). Both plants look to be very happy and healthy at the moment. I am not supplementing with cal mag at the moment, but will keep an eye on the leaves as the flowers grow to stay on top of any deficiencies.

Scrogged heavily the first week of flower, and the plants have pushed the middle of the net up a good two inches! The canopy is filling up quickly it feels like, and it’s hard to imagine finding room for another potential two weeks of stretch. We shall see how it goes. I suppose worst case I just stop tucking and let them grow up the last bit of stretch. The pictures are not super exciting for this technique.

I continued tucking tops through day 13F, at which time I decided the canopy was as full as I wanted it to be, and it was a nice and even height across and under the light. I also wanted to let the tops stretch a few inches over the net so the buds have somewhere to develop and not get squished in the net. I decided to turn up the light a bit today (day 15F) for the first time in a while, increasing the PPFD from about 600 to 750-800. I should have plenty of height in the tent and will let the canopy grow back up to the recommended 11” under the light. I raised the light to lower the PPFD while the plants get used to the brighter intensity. Plants take less water than the single 5 gal did in my last grow, but they’re getting thirstier since I flipped them. I will clean them up next week, and plan to remove the lower cruft that didn’t make it to the canopy and will open up the fab leaves as necessary to allow air flow.

Plants stopped stretching around day 18, and I defoliated on day 19 due to scheduling conflicts on day 21. Cleared some fan leaves to improve airflow and took out any that were shielding bud sites. Removed any flowers or buds that were too low to get good light and that would end up just making larf. Both plants look great post defoliation and flowers are starting to come in. One of the plants is showing purple coloring on her pistils, which is pretty cool! The other has normal white pistils.

Plants just grew this week. They recovered well from the defoliation last week. One of them looks a little like she’s got a deficiency of some kind but I can’t tell for sure, and she does not appear to be stressed otherwise. The canopy looks pretty good, all things considered. I can do better next time, but so far this looks better than my first grow, and that’s how we learn. Played with turning the light up to 100%, but it was too bright for my small tent I think. The PPFD was around 1200, and the temperature at canopy increased up to 79 within minutes. I feared roasting my plants and they are still getting almost 1000 PPFD at max now so I turned it back down to 75 and will let that be the maximum intensity for the grow.

One of the plants has been looking a little calcium deficient so I will supplement a little extra cal mag for a few weeks. Otherwise I’ve just been maintaining this week, plucked off a few low buds that were destined to be larf and kept the fan leaves from blocking the tops. Not too much action this week. At some point, I will probably start lowering the daytime temp a few more degrees, but this isn’t super vital or time dependent.

One of my plants has a clear calcium deficiency that finally started burning the leaves this week. I realize now that this plant presented differently early in the deficiency than my last grow, and was likely the cause of the purple interveinal coloration a few weeks back. Live and learn and more cal mag when growing in coco. At least the other girl is looking great still! No sign of deficiency in her. Buds are looking great in both plants.

Maintenance week. Calcium deficiency seems to have halted with the added cal mag in the water. I’ll keep adding it through harvest at this point. No sense in having it come back. I’ve been considering lowering my lights over the last few weeks as I have read this helps finishing but I’m waffling at the moment. Let me know if you have an opinion on the topic in the comments. The one pheno is showing a nice purple fade. The other is still fully green but looks very happy. Both smell super strong and are overpowering the carbon filter at times. They’ve just started throwing more pistils so they’ve still got 2-3 weeks easy.

Plants are starting to mature, and buds are starting to stack up new growth. Sugar leaves and flowers are getting pretty frosty. Both plants are showing senescence in different ways. One is having a decent fade in the fan and sugar leaves, while the other’s sugar leaves are staying green but twisting a bit on the edges. Both are super stinky. Hard to define what terpenes they’re throwing, maybe they’re just combing weird in my nose. They’re both dank and loud though, regardless. Just performing maintenance at this point. Will lower my light intensity slightly by raising the light as the days get closer to harvest to lower the dli as I’ve seen recommended online.

More maintenance this week. Ticked the light up a click or two to slightly lower the DLI and lowered the daytime temp to 72. Buds all started growing fresh pistils a few days ago, so I’m guessing I’ve got a good week or two left before harvesting. Currently day 64F. Stopped cal mag since plants are finishing up. Edit to add: I noticed one apparent seed on one bud on one single plant. It’s been about a week or so since I’ve noticed it and it has not developed at all that I can tell. I poked at it and it felt pretty soft so I think it’s sterile. I did not find any bananas anywhere after extensive searches so I feel good.

I think they’ll be ready within the next week. The first ambers are visible across the mature buds, and the late pistils are maturing and should be mature in a few days. Once that’s done, I’ll watch the for some more amber and chop when ready. Timing wise, they may be ready on thanksgiving. I’m glad it’s getting cold here, as it will make drying much easier. The overnight low in the tent is currently 62, which would be a great temp for drying. It’s supposed to stay cool for the next four to six months or so so I should be in good shape.

Checked trikes every day. Everything was cloudy with a handful of ambers, but these plants seemed resistant to getting super amber so I decided to chop them on day 76. Gave them a heavy defoliation the day before chopping. Removed all leaves that didn’t have trichomes. Unplugged the light after the last lights out and removed the net the next day. Chopped them after I got the net off and hung them in the tent. Conditions are almost ideal since it’s winter here, and are hanging around 60 degrees F and 60% RH. Hoping to have them dry for 10-14 days.
