New year's eve and this little bean was nestled into a nice moist Rapid Rooter and placed into a seedling tray with a little bit of RO water in the reservoir. I made a cozy little nest by placing a heating pad into the bottom of a dry grow bucket, topped it with a small folded towel, and then placed the seedling tray with humidity dome inside. I zipped up the tent and I'll see them in 48 hours...
~~~~~~~
1/3/19 - germinating beautifully! 😊 I moved her and her sister over to my huge bedroom window for some sun! Keeping the heating pad under the seedling tray to make sure they don't get too chilly! ✌️
Started under California Lightworks 550 Solar System LED with following settings - R49 W99 B99 with a cycle of 18/6.
1/5/19 Tangie is a rock star. Keeping her under the humidity dome until her roots get more developed.
1/6/19 Changed light settings to 39/49/99 per recommendation suggested by California Lightworks
1/13/19 - Got Tangie tucked into her new big girl bed last night. She’s in an 8 gallon Current Culture solo bucket in clay pellets. I filled the bucket with 6.5 gallons of RO water and added 3ml UC Roots and 1.25ml Coco Cal.
I have some yellow tips on the first leaves from accidentally letting the rapid rooter get a little over saturated when in the seedling tray, but her new growth is very healthy!
1/15/19 - Tangie's roots are starting to make their way down the net basket! I have changed the position of the light to 41" above the baby canopy and changed light settings to R49 W49 B99
1/18/19 - Gave Tangie her first meal tonight. I'm using the Current Culture line of nutes and mixed 1/4 of the recommended strength. Happy munching, Tangie! 🍊
I'm looking closer at my seedling and wondering if I am getting some early signs of lightburn. 😣 I jacked the lights back up to 44" away from the seedlings, but that's quite a bit higher than the recommended 24-36" by California Lightworks.
1/20/19 - It was suggested to me that Tangie might have been hungry for a bit of magnesium, and since she was still looking a little pale, I added an additional 1/4 dose of just UC Roots and Coco Cal. She already looks much happier!
1/27/19 - Fell a little out of sync with my grow schedule, and poor tangie'matic had to SHOW me she was hungry because I just wasn't paying attention... Doh! 😩
Gave her another feeding using 1/3 the recommended strength of UC Roots, Coco Cal, and Veg A&B. Keeping a close eye, because I think I may have been misdiagnosing calcium deficiency as nute or light burn in the past. The more I read, the more it makes sense. Constantly learning!
This grow is dedicated to purposefully learning and trying something new… It’s going to be my first time attempting to top my autos. I have talked to many talented growers of both sides of the fence, and what I have determined is this… Reading article upon article, forum thread upon forum thread, and grow diary upon grow diary ad nauseam isn’t going to give me what I’m looking for. Only my own first-hand experience is going to reveal to me what MY best way to grow is. I have gotten more than comfortable with my creative ways of LSTing - when at first I was all thumbs and nervous mistakes. Now it’s time for me to get uncomfortable again. And you know what they say, the only time you are ACTUALLY growing is when you’re uncomfortable! 😉 So I’m just all around enthusiastic about the next few months!
1/29/19 - Leaves had begun showing signs of what I think is calcium deficiency a few days ago, but I had failed to read the signs. Now I have worked to correct it by adding small doses of Coco Cal to the reservoir over the past couple of days. As of yesterday, symptoms were still rapidly progressing to new leaves. None of the new branches are affected, it seems to only be showing up on the fan leaves so far, but I'm. Hoping today I start to see the turn around and the halting of progressing symptoms.
Today I topped Tangie'matic at the 5th node. Let's see if she still loves me in the morning 🌤️
2/2/19- Tangie'matic is showing zero signs of stress after her topping. She pretty much just kept on growing and doing her thang. I removed a couple of leaves that had suffered from calcium deficiency and now this lady is just flourishing! 😍
2/4/19 - I'm really pleasantly surprised by Tangie'matic. I expected stress and stunting after topping, but she's pushing back with vigor and growth! I'm relieved, as this is my first topping experiment, and I'm doing it with an autoflower. Naturally, learning something new comes with a certain degree of uncertainty, but I feel like Tangie has been more of a partner in this learning process. For that I am thankful. 🙏
2/6/19 - Reservoir Δ Day! Tangie'matic's roots look immaculate!
Tangie'matic has responded beautifully to topping! Compared to the way I have grown previously with only LST, this has cut my work in half! I have been able to create a perfectly even canopy with an abundance of beautiful bud sites! I'm excited to watch her unfold now that she's flowering!
She's also starting to smell really nice now that her buds are coming in. 😊
Tangie'matic is flourishing like a rock star! I did some light defoliation last week, but I think I need to get in there and open her up a bit more for some proper airflow. Otherwise, everything is as good as I could hope for!
Had all the intentions of doing a proper defoliation, but life got in the way, so she's really bushing out. Despite the thickness of her undergrowth, her buds are really starting to fatten up nicely!
Tangie'matic got a massively overdue defoliation, which included the removal of a few of the lower branches that just weren't getting any light. She happily accepted the new haircut and rewarded me by continuing to stack and fatten up her buds!
Moved the grow to the basement which caused my plants to have to readjust to the new environmental norm. It's quite a bit colder down there so I used a flood light to bring up the heat outside of the tent and had a few days of 24 hour light cycle to warm up the tent's interior environment.
Once the air and reservoir warmed up enough, the plants started happily eating and showing me how much they love their new home. ✌️❤️🏡
I gave Tangie'matic another mild defoliation, a little on the late side, but life had some wrenches.
This plant has been very forgiving, and despite the warning to be careful not to stress this strain, I have to say that she has done a solid job handling all of the unintentional stress I've thrown her way.
Her buds are stacking so fantastically that I find myself in awe with every opening of the tent. The day/night temperature change is doing a solid job at pulling the colors out of this plant.
She smells like citrus, but when my hands are done ruffling her feathers, there is a distinct skunky odor.
She survived me being away for 4 days in Miami, but she didn't love the cooler nights we had and a couple of the buds have some foxtailing.
Now that I'm here for the rest of the home stretch, I'm working extra hard to bring the best environmental conditions that I can to my frigid basement. The change in trichomes over the last couple of days tell me that it's about time to drill and flush.
Coming to a close here with Tangie'matic. This grow has been so enriching! I decided to go outside of my comfort zone and head strong into the controversial world of topping autoflowers.
Some people swear by it, others stand by their stance that topping an autoflower will destroy any chance at a decent yield by stunting the plant in its already limited life cycle.
This plant has been a true partner throughout this grow process. I pushed with the top, she pushed back with buds. I pushed her again by changing her grow environment when I decided to prematurely move my grow tent into the basement. She stacked and fattened.
When I traveled and let her house get too chilly, she tossed me a couple of foxtails to remind me that I need to do a better job. I responded with more environment correction and she rewarded me by finishing up beautifully.
Flush time! So somewhere over the last 2 weeks the smell coming off this plant changed from strong citrus to a distinct skunk smell. Not too sure how I feel about it considering I. Was chasing the Tangie terps, but let's see how she cures.
I did a reservoir change and she's running with just RO water for the next couple of days mixed with 48 hours of darkness or so, and then she gets the axe!
Cracking the jars on these deliciously citrus buds delivers a beautiful whiff of mandarin top notes that tickle the senses while giving a hint of some mildly skunky undertones. I sincerely enjoy burping each and every one of these jars.
The smoke is very smooth and gentle on the lungs. The flavor can't help but bring a smile to my lips. The high has a very pleasant onset that gives me a playful euphoria that often comes attached with a case of the giggles.
After about 20 minutes or so, a real nice body high sets in, and my skin feels tingly, and hypersensitive to touch. 😉 It's a real fantastic strain for getting snuggly.
Because of the effects of the body high and intensity of the euphoria, I don't recommend it as a wake and bake strain, but a great late afternoon into the evening/night strain!
This was a strain-chaser grow for me - after smoking a local grower's Tangie, I knew I needed to grow it - and I am STOKED that it delivered! All in all, a freaking delightful flower that I will most certainly be growing again!
Tangie'matic showed me that she was in it for the long haul right from the start. This was my first time topping an autoflower and I wasn't sure how it was going to turn out - but each time she took on stress, she pushed back even stronger.
I topped her once at the 5th node, and then used some low stress training to create this beautiful canopy. She really grew like a dream!
Partway through flower I had to move my grow tent from my second-floor bedroom to my not quite warm enough basement. I had assumed that the heat from the grow lights would have compensated, but it didn't take me long to realize how wrong I was. This poor plant had her reservoir and atmospheric temperatures dropped with no warning.
She held in there while I figured out how to get the environment closer to desirable and less feeling like a frozen tundra. In the mish mash of environmental flux, some of her buds began to foxtail. This was my first time seeing this happen; so despite the fact that it's not desirable, seeing foxtailing happen with my own buds for the first time was actually kind of cool.
After the environmental woes were corrected, she stacked even more. Her buds nice and dense with a citrus fragrance complimented by some subtle skunky undertones.
Before harvest I changed out her reservoir and gave her a 4 day flush along with 48 hours of darkness. When I opened the tent on harvest day I was punched in the face with a beautiful fragrance of mandarin that instantly lifted the corners of my mouth into a sweet smile of satisfaction.
I cut her down and hung her to dry in my climate controlled closet holding a perfect 69.8°F and 55% RH. Six days later her buds were ready for the jars.
Her dry buds gave me 8.8oz/250g of quality bud and an additional 2.9oz/82g of popcorn buds. Just being in jars for 24 hours has REALLY brought out even a stronger citrus aroma that is just a true pleasure to take in.
Will update with more after the cure and first smoke experience. ✌️💜🌱0000
Great job! Even without the challenges that you had you really came through on this one in my opinion. I’m going to switch over to ebb and flow for my next auto as you really can see a difference in the yield and quality.
Thanks for sharing
@blazin_skywalker, you’re a bad influence on me lol. I have a gorilla glue and an amnesia xxl autos that I went and topped this afternoon since reading yours. Truthfully I did it to my Moby Dick early on and the results have seemed pretty good so far.
@Silverback_Guerilla,There's nothing like enjoying the beauty of buds in their natural lighting. I felt like I was looking at her for the first time! 😍
This is a wonderful grow, well done 👌
But why is tangie purplish, isn't is supposed to be white ? I also have tangie she is in her 8th week and is frosty white lul 😂
@WiddieThePooh, Thank you! I think the biggest factor in the throw of color was the dramatic temperature fluctuations this poor plant endured. When I moved them into the basement to finish flowering, the day/night temperature swing was pretty substantial. This is just a theory though. ✌️
What a yield truely awesome grow, great colours. I’m growing 3 Tangie’matic’s if I can get anything close to that per plant I will be amazed lol. I’m hoping for 16 oz off 3 plants. Enjoy those flowers.
@DustyDuke, Thank you so much! Do you have a diary shared for them? I'd love to watch the grow! She's been curing for a couple of weeks now and oh my terpy word, what a beautiful smoke!!!
Hey! Im talking to u on Instagram..
I want to learn w/ ur diaries, dank plants 🖤
Its my first run, DWC setup.
By the way, great inspiration to me, thnx for share
That is amazing. What was your average indoor temp? Also I am using 8 gal current culture now. I have light leaks in between the holes where the tubes are supposed to go through, it leaves a gap. Did you have any issues with that? I bought a linear air pump and I have a feeling that brought my indoor temp much higher , I’m sitting at 84F from 80F now which is not good at all.
