Germination success! 4/5 of our GSC seeds germinated and sprouted (80% success rate). The first 2 taproots emerged about 36 hours after initial germination, and the other 2 emerged the next day. A hole was cut in the bottom of a red solo cup and stacked inside another red solo cup (for drainage). Seeds were placed, taproot facing down, into moistened soil about 1/4 in. deep, and lightly covered with a pinchful of soil. Once seeds were planted, soil around the edges of the cups were lightly misted with water. All 4 cups were placed on a heating mat (keeping the temp from 70-80 degrees F), and placed in the grow tent with the lights off, for 2 days. After 48 hours, gentle light was introduced and for the seedling stage, we will maintain an 18/6 hr. lighting schedule, gradually increasing light strength from about 20% strength to 50-60% strength throughout the seedling stage in the next couple of weeks. Humidity range goal for the tent is 60-75%, with a VPD set on our AC Infinity controller to 0.8 kPa; OK for it to range from 0.45-0.75 kPa at this stage.
WATERING:
Day 8: Plants 2 & 3 were given their first watering (3.4 oz of water with a pinchful of Bergman's seedling booster (11% Nitrogen, 40% Phosphorus, 13% Potassium).
Day 9: Plants 1 & 4 were given their first watering (3.4 oz of water w/ same nutrient as above)
Day 13: All plants given 3.5 oz water (no nutrient) - Grow light was increased this week by 10% (30% of total light strength)
***Some mild leaf curling noticed on 2 of the plants on 15-days post germ; lights reduced back down to 20% intensity; will resume with gradual increase in a couple of days once plants have a day or two to recover from the stress.
Transplant during week 3 was a success! All 4 plants made it from their original solo cup containers into their 5 gallon fabric pots. Once in their larger pots, each plant was watered with 1 gallon of water/plant (no nutrient). Lighting was also brought back up to 30% this week as the leaf curling that was observed previously has subsided.
Plants were watered on day 4 of week 4, as follows:
Thin Mint Jr. (P1): 1 gallon water, pH: 6.2, Height: 5 1/4 in.
Thin Mint Sr (P2): 1 gallon water, pH: 6.13, Height: 4 1/2 in.
Lucy (P3): 1 gallon water, pH: 5.6 (slightly low), Height: 5 in.
Herbert (P4): 1 gallon water, pH: 4.93 (LOW), Height: 4 3/4 in.
***All plants were watered with nutrient this week; Bergman's Plant Food Growtime Fertilizer (19% N, 5% P, 20% K - 2/3 tsp/gallon)
***Planning to add pH UP solution to Plants 3 & 4 (more notably P4) to increase their pH levels a bit as they are a little lower than ideal right now. Our pH goal is 5.8-6.5).
***Lights increased to 40% intensity on day 3 of this week and increased again to 40% on day 5 of this week.
*Current AC Infinity tent settings:
Daytime temp: 73-78 degrees F
Nighttime temp: 67-70 degrees F
Humidity range: 50-60% (ideal is 55% for daytime)
Plants are continuing to grow! One plant, Thin Mint Jr, was showing some signs of stress which improved after this week's nutrient feeding.
Plants were watered on day 4 of week 5, as follows:
Thin Mint Jr. (P1): 1 gallon water, pH: 6.42, Height: 7 1/2 in.
Thin Mint Sr (P2): 1 gallon water, pH: 6.48, Height: 8 in.
Lucy (P3): 1 gallon water, pH: 6.23, Height: 10 1/4 in. (doubled in height since last week)
Herbert (P4): 1 gallon water, pH: 5.33 (improved from last weeks 4.93 reading), Height: 8 1/2 in.
***Lucy and Herbert, whose pH readings were slightly low last week, have shown progress with a slight increase this week (not using any pH solutions at this time - slowly alkalizing with natural pH of the filtered water, which sits around 6.9/7, and this seems to be working so far).
Plants were watered on day 2 of week 6, as follows:
Thin Mint Jr. (P1): 3/4 gallon water, pH: 6.29, Height: 10 1/4 in.
Thin Mint Sr (P2): 3/4 gallon water, pH: 6.9 (slightly high), Height: 10 in. - has some leaf discoloration indicating likely nutrient deficiency (should respond after nutrient feeding)
Lucy (P3): 3/4 gallon water, pH: 6.26, Height: 14 in.
Herbert (P4): 1 1/4 gallon water, pH: 5.27 (slight drop from last week and slightly low), Height: 12 1/2 in.
Plants were watered again on day 6 of week 6, as follows:
Thin Mint Jr. (P1): 3/4 gallon water, pH: 6.56
Thin Mint Sr (P2): 3/4 gallon water, pH: 6.56 (Notes: leaf discoloration; needs nutrient feeding; nutrient has been ordered and waiting for it to arrive - plant should be OK temporarily)
Lucy (P3): 3/4 gallon water, pH: 6.18
Herbert (P4): 3/4 gallon water, pH: 5.3 (continues to be slightly low but plant appearance is robust and healthy so not overly concerned; will keep an eye on this)
***Usually I like to water each plant with the same amount of water, to keep things consistent, but P4 (Herbert) wasn't having sufficient runoff water until 1 1/4 gallons, so just had to adjust for the one plant this week.
***We are fluctuating a bit with some nutrient deficiencies and possible difficulty adjusting to the brighter light intensity (currently at 70% intensity). Growth has been good and nutrient deficiencies haven't been overly worrying, as plants seem to be responding well to their feedings.
***This week, switched to using Fox Farm Big Bloom as the nutrient of choice. Using general feedings, which are 4 Tablespoons/gallon of water. (Analysis: 0.50% Available Phosphate (P2O5), 0.70% Soluble Potash (K2O), and 0.10% Iron (Fe).
Plants were watered on day 3 of week 8, as follows:
Lucy: 1 gallon water, pH: 6.57 (no nutrients)
Herbert: 1.25 gallons water, pH: 6.38 (no nutrients)
Plants were watered on day 4 of week 8, as follows:
Thin Mint: 1 gallon water, pH: 6.01 (in nutrient distress)
Thin Mint Jr: 1 gallon water, pH: 6.5 (in nutrient distress)
***(both plants fed with BioCanna BioVega Nutrient - 3% N, 1% Phosphate, 5% Soluble Potash)
Plants were watered on day 7 of week 8, as follows:
Thin Mint Sr: 1 gallon water, pH: 6.50, Height: 18.5 in. (in nutrient distress - in process of recovery)
Thin Mint Jr: 1 gallon water, pH: 6.50, Height: 18 in (in nutrient distress - in process of recovery)
Lucy: 1 gallon water, pH: 5.98, Height: 21 in.
Herbert: 1.5 gallons water, pH: 5.66, Height: 22 in.
***(All plants fed nutrients - 5 ml/.5 gal BioVega (3% N, 1% Phosphate, 5% Soluble Potash), 7 ml/.5 gal BioBoost (1% Phosphate), and 1 ml/.5 gal BioRhizotonic (0.6% Soluble Potash))
Plants were watered on day 4 of week 9, as follows:
Lucy: 1 gallon water, pH: 6.27, Height: 22 in.
Herbert: 1.25 gallons water, pH: 5.77, Height: 24.5 in.
***Both fed nutrients - 5 ml/.5 gal BioVega (3% N, 1% Phosphate, 5% Soluble Potash), 7 ml/.5 gal BioBoost (1% Phosphate), and 1 ml/.5 gal BioRhizotonic (0.6% Soluble Potash)
Plants were watered on day 5 of week 9, as follows:
Thin Mint Sr: 1 gallon water, pH: 6.76, Height: 20 in.
Thin Mint Jr: 1 gallon water, pH: 6.50, Height: 19.5 in
Notes: Thin Mint Jr has nutrient burn and so was NOT fed nutrients today. Thin Mint Sr was fed nutrients at 50% strength 2.5 ml/.5 gal BioVega (3% N, 1% Phosphate, 5% Soluble Potash), 4 ml/.5 gal BioBoost (1% Phosphate), and 0.5 ml/.5 gal BioRhizotonic (0.6% Soluble Potash) (both plants still in nutrient distress - in process of recovery but have some new growth that is greener so improvement is being observed; slowly but surely!)
***Plants ideally would have been transitioned to the flowering phase this week, but due to nutrient deficiencies and nutrient burn on Thin Mint Jr., we are holding off on this transition for 1 week to give the plants a chance to recover from stress.
