Hello, I’m wondering if you can help me determine when to harvest? I don’t have a microscope, do you think that’s necessary?
I don’t see any amber tric’s, they all look milky/cloudy. But the buds have fattened up. Should I start flush, and plan to harvest in 2 weeks?
The 70's hippies were using the pistols method. Not the most accurate , not the most efficient BUT the better way to harvest with NO magnifier. You harvest when most of your pistols are brown and if you plant is also yellowing at the same time then you have the perfect combi because the late flowering yellowing ( if the plant is correctly feed ) is called senescence and it is a natural way to show you that it is the end of the road for the plant. So brown pistols + yellowing = ready to chop.
Hi mate, nice looking buds💪
A simple think you can do if you dont have microscope, is to look at the pistils, when is 70%-80% orange-red its time to harvest. This articles will help you more.

Budrick pretty well covered it but just want to throw a couple things with it. If u have a smart phone with a good camera you can take pics from as close as the camera with focus and then zoom in. It's not ideal magnification but u can see enough. The trick I discovered to that is u get better pics with the flash but the light reflects off the clear trichomes and they appear sparkling white, the milky ones looks kind of goopy and sticky and dingy colored. U cant go entirely off pistols but I'd wait til some began darkening and curling in. I've only grown 6 strains so I'm no expert but all mine so far have had around 50% darken and begin curling . Invest in some higher power magnification when u can but if now isn't gonna work u can try the phone method. I can post a pic and show u what I mean if youd like. I understand what you're going through, I'm just getting a good feel for it approaching my 6th harvest. Best of luck!
Week 10 - I’ve even impressed myself... these girls look frustrated as hell!
but it’s getting hard to refrain from cutting .
Bought a magnifier and I’m down to wait a couple more weeks.
@StarFluff710, no problem, anytime. Theres many people much more qualified than I am to answer questions so I normally dont even look at them. I had the same struggle since I started growing so I felt your pain lol. I finally bought myself a digital microscope today actually. I got inspired lol
@beans - hey man, any input is welcomed and appreciated ~ I’ve found that the best way to learn something is to teach it to someone else. I’m down to collaborate
@StarFluff710, it really does seem to solidify your knowledge and improve your overall understanding of whatever it is you are trying to teach somebody. There is a definite sweet spot during the learning process where trying to teach somebody or even bouncing ideas back n forth and experimenting with them is highly effective. I've learned that working cuz I've always ended up being the guy who trains new employees or cross trains other coworkers on things they're new to. I think I'm right about at that sweet spot and this is a perfect platform for it. Theres plenty of veterans on here that can check in on us and let us know if we're about to do some dumb ass shit lol. If not we can hopefully both learn from 1 mistake instead of both figuring it out on our own. Shoot me a message and we can do this👊
I’m struggling with when to cut. Advice welcome, the buds look ready to me, but I’m holding off because I don’t see amber trichromes, but I’m color blind
I bought an LED lighted microscope, with magnification 20x to 60x
But I’m having a hard time holding the microscope over plants, while my unsteady hands make it impossible to focus.
The focal point is so narrow that the scope
Is useless to me until I cut plant and check it on flat surface. I don’t want to cut til ready, so I’m wondering... did I buy the wrong thing, or am I missing something on how to use these simple devices?
