All popped within 5 days, #1 wore a helmet for a day, but quickly shed, that’s why it’s got a bit more stretch. Just using well water and a slurry of fresh aloe and yucca extract. Looking for a winner female from this batch, might have use for any males that happen to pop.. Will put winner female against next batch, looking for a keeper for the nursery.
Babies just trucking along. #1 is still a bit taller, maybe by a quarter inch at best. No nutrients yet.. the soil is enough probably for the first 3 months. Its 50/50 seed mix and potting mix.. we make our own compost and potting mix, then blend that with some other things for the seedling mix. It’s moistened as needed with aloe/yucca and well water, not wet and not dry, delicate balance... other than that they’re being kept moist by the same aloe/yucca schidigera mix for the time being. Feel free to comment for details on our soil mixes, I imagine they’re pretty standard.
There are a few anomalies on 1-4.. discolored patches on some of the leaves. Not irregular in growth, just light patches. No pests, no issues, the spots are actually as perfectly healthy as the rest of the leaf. They got their first feeding at a quarter strength, we shall see how they respond, I expect accelerated growth. Next week we will probably move on over to 3g fabric pots. They’ll stay there till after we take some cuttings and see which one is a keeper.. my money right now is on #4 but we shall see.. They’re also going to get hit with a SST next week to help power through the transplant.
Smooth sailing this week.. got the bunch tucked away into their 3 gallon bags. The keeper will move to a 5g forever home once she’s chosen. Mix is an equal part combo of homemade compost, organic potting soil and perlite.. they were watered in with the weekly feed and some diluted SST. Looks like the new growth have outgrown their stripes.
Between the extra root space and the SST, these babies are chugging right along! Moved them up to about half strength on the nutes, plus added in the extra silica and cal-mag supplements, as-well-as another round of SST this week. The next couple weeks we will start looking at collecting the top shoots to get the test clones going, and start training out branches.. super exciting.
Not much to report.. except #4 popping out fam leaves the size of my hand.. each one definitely showing unique characteristics. Still a week or 2 away from taking cuttings to see what we got once and for all. This is going to be an exciting diary lol
The bunch is looking super happy, they’re basically off to the races at this point.. Strange leaf mutation on #1, otherwise it’s very healthy, new growth looking just fine. Have high hopes for number 4 still. We defoliated to help utilize the tent space, plus we want to encourage more branching for after the cutting next week. They’ve been bumped up to full strength on the nutes and I’m expecting them to be ready to give up the tops next week, then of course the cuttings will go straight to flower once they root.. and we can finally see what we are working with!
Slacked on the update this week... I apologize, family stuff happens. They sprung back from the defoliation, and were ready for “the cut.” We are taking the tops as clones to root and send to flower, I’ll update with pics Thursday.. For the cuttings, we chopped a nice aloe leaf into 4 pieces and then clipped the tops below the second highest node, and stuffed each cutting into a chunk of aloe. This is going to give the moms time to branch up and we can start training them, and once the clones root they’ll go straight into 1 gallons and the flower room. Update soon..
Thanks for the info and comments! Absolutely, that’s the plan. That will also give us time to figure out what to do with any males. Might get composted.. space restrictions. :’(
