Hello, again, everyone. It’s been over a month now since I began trying to grow with aeroponics and in that time I have started and lost 3 crops of seedlings. I believe after all that trial and error I finally have it figured out and would love to use this diary to share with you a general how-to.
Firstly, my light is a Sun system 315W LEC, the site doesn’t have an option for LEC lighting yet but I used this system the majority of my last grow and it holds a special place in my heart. I have added in some side lighting by way of a 450W Relassy LED that I chose because its super compact profile saves valuable space in my tent.
The aeroponics system itself is a Platinium AeroStar-60. This system is considered low pressure aeroponics. It’s modular and can be converted to ebb and flow or micro-irrigation; so that’s cool. It’s a bitch to sterilize and you’ll probably never feel like you got it clean enough. I spent hours on it with peroxide and soaking each container in my tub and etc etc. It can get pretty gunky at parts where nutrients might settle or not drain completely.
So what am I doing different this time than the others? First off, I hardened my seedlings longer. They started in a heat mat and humidity dome until they got too lanky for that, from there I rigged up a small homemade DWC system for them to give them about another week of establishing themselves. Second, and what I hadn’t done on the first two attempts, you need to use a timer for your sprayers on-off cycle. Your root zone can’t be getting sprayed 24/7. I picked up a cheap on/off interval timer and have it set for 5 seconds every 60 minutes. That’s it. I could probably set the off cycle even longer but this timer only allows for 60 minutes. Third and what I will call MOST important, and what no other aeroponic tutorials mentioned to me. That reservoir needs oxygen. Use air stones, you absolutely have to. I am 98.9789893 percent sure that lack of oxygen in my reservoir was the culprit behind third attempts heart breaking root-rot. Finally, I kept reading in forums about people saying how adding in a product called Flying Skull Z7 completely solved root rot issues for them. So I picked some up, the entire 8 gallons res. Requires a super small amount, it’s sold in a 2 part pack. I don’t know if it’s making a difference or if these plants are thriving because the billion other changes I’ve made; but it can’t hurt.
Man the stalks on the girls! You could use them as a club.
You would think that your girls wouldn't be producing as much leafy matter at this stage of flowering.
Now that you are half way through your grow, how are you liking your new growing set-up?
@LazLow, Good luck. They should be okay. It's too bad you couldn't just leave them, but you would have a real mess on your hand if you waited too long.
@Quexos, I just pruned one girls roots back significantly this morning, never attempted that before so I’ll see how she’s doing the next few days and if she stays healthy I’ll prune them all back
Man you have put together an incredible growing system! I am more envious than you can imagine!!! You even have LEC lights!!!😃
Everyone looks really healthy. I guess 3rd times the charm?😁😁 Good luck. I'll keep checking back in to see how this system works out!
Do all hydroponic grows require that many additives?
@LazLow, Wow, so its also more efficient in terms of nutrition. You might want to keep the cal-mag in the mix. Cal-Mag will help plant structure, and help it to absorb nutrients. When I switched to AN this last grow, I noticed that my plants were in constant need of Cal-Mag. I guess it depends on the nutrient line you are using.
@Quexos, I don’t believe so. The hydroguard and flying skull are purely in there to prevent root rot. The silica blast is in there for elasticity when LST starts. Probably don’t even need the cal/mag and will take it out. Past that you just have a general part A part B veg/bloom blend. I do know however that you can cut recommended doses in half in a lot of hydro set ups and as much as a quarter what’s recommended with aero.
Everything looks so clean and sterile! All the girls look great! I can see how you can separate the reservoirs when the plants start to crowd each other. You'll just need a bigger tray underneath.
Hey there!
Wow, what a set up you got going there!
We will be following along to see how your Blue Dream'Matic progresses=)
Let us know if you need anything 💚
Now that some crazy root growth at this early stage 👌
Nice to see our Autoflowering Critical Jack in your selection 👍
Thank you for growing our genetics out and good luck with this grow 👊
We will be along for the ride and watching with interest mate ✌️
Until next time 👍
All the best
Mark..
@Quexos, the system isn’t meant to reconfigure that way but with flex tubing and ingenuity anything is possible lol hope it doesn’t come to that after the work I put towards learning it I was hoping I could just sip my coffee and nod approvingly at it from here on out 😂
@LazLow, Yeah , you are kinda set in stone because of your system configuration. Are you able to re-configure in the future and have 3 separate reservoirs?
You never know about these strains. Ones that you would expect to get large, stay short. I think that is especially with autos. I've seen a few strains that I would expect to get around 4ft., end up half that size.
@Budofpray, yep, golden tree is a sulfate so you’re going to get that lovely sulfur smell. If you’re running it hydroponically it’s going to stain your roots as well so stay vigilant on detecting root rot symptoms because it’s going to be hard to notice from just looking at the roots cause they’re gonna be brown healthy or not
@LazLow,ok dude : i understand better 💪💪
i have another question ! a friend gave me a litle bottle of golden tree….wich was new and scelled but at the opening the smell was close to rotten eggs...is it the same for you ??
thx for your answer ! i wish you the best for your grow 👌
🙏
@Budofpray, the LED only runs during defoliation or other maintenance chores if I get to the tent during it’s night cycle. It’s not attached to a timer anymore, it ran when they were young and could spread across the canopy. Now it’s just a glorified flash light
Interesting; good to see another aeroponic grower!
Just converted over to HPA for my last grow; started with LPA.
What did you end up for spray cycle? Currently using 10 seconds on/5mins off on my rig; 3x 50 micron nozzles per plant.
