watering is a reaction. it's not a top-down thing.
you use enough to accomplish the task. You wait for appropriate dryback before you repeat. react to stimulus... Some minor nuances if soil vs soilless but still the same basics.
If you react to what you see in a consistent way, you'll automatically do the right thing.
if not fully saturating each irrigation (10% runoff in soilless), you were doing it wrong from the start. if inductively choosing when to water, you are doing it wrong from the start.
