Old School, homegrow, combining common sense with basic nutes available to most everyone. Using city water that tested high in iron, Ca and Si. Adjusting Ph without a meter, using drops and a color change. Centech digital laser thermometer for temps. Photo of seedling taken at day 6.

Growing well, not going to make any adjustments beyond changing nutes from the high N Orchid food to the Tomato food. Ph of the solution is always tested and adjusted after adding nutes.

Plants are beginning to take on a faint skunky odor. I’ll have to get that charcoal filter for the exhaust fan quicker than I expected. I’m using a bathroom exhaust fan that terminates in the attic to remove air. I added back the high N Miracle Grow Orchid food this week to see if it makes more vegetation with or without it. Began LST on day 18 using skewers to begin pushing the flexible side branches downward as they grow out. Also failed to mention earlier, my soil and pots: Jiffy Seed starter (coco, peat, perlite) blended with bone meal and worm casings. In earthboxes, 2 plants to a box. I used a piece of an old sheet to line the grid so my fine soil mix didn’t all fall through. I started with moist soil and am watering the soil in a circle around the plants about once every 5 days. The fabric is also stuffed down into the water reservoir to assist with wicking in the event that it is needed.

Doing a aide by side comparison of a LS trained plant to one left natural. I selected the larger of the two to train. Planning to switch lights to 12/12 in about a week. I’d like to see a little more growth out of the smaller one first.

One plant lags behind the other in overall size. We had a brief issue with fungus gnats. Treated using a soil/root drench of 1:4 peroxide:water.

The plant with the LST has responded so much better than the one on the right that I left to grow naturally. I’m simply pulling the branches down to open the canopy, and that little bit of effort seems to have produced nearly twice the vegetative growth as the natural plant in the exact same soil and conditions. It’s an earthbox so they are getting the same nutes/water as I am not top feeding anything. I let the moisture meter dictate if I need to add water or not and I watch the plants themselves to determine if I need to modify my nute profile. I am starting to see maybe the first hints of flowering. Hopefully we’ll have baby buds start developing within the next 10-14 days.

Gave the girls a little trimming to remove some fan/shave leaves since they’ve spread so well to take up their growing space and light wasn’t getting through the top of the canopy very well the last couple of days. I only removed fan leaves that were shading bud sites or those that had started to yellow because they were not getting any light. Colas are starting to form everywhere! My lights have both Veg and Bloom features. Veg turns on all the LEDs on the panel, bloom eliminates the blue tones. I’m using the Veg lights for about 4 h a day to mimick peak sunlight, and the bloom light scheme in the mornings and evenings. It may not matter at all, but I’m available to make the change, so I do it.

Started adding molasses to the feeding solution on day 56, 26d into flowering light cycle. The plant that I LST is LOADED with colas. The one I left to grow naturally doesn’t have nearly as many colas. I’ll be using LST in the future for all of my grows just based on this side by side comparison. The Earthboxes are doing really well. These girls haven’t really had any issues.

Noticing the slightest bit of leaf burn starting to show up on the tips, cutting nutes back going forward. I realize I am only midway of the 5th week of flowering, but I am a little concerned that they aren’t fattening up as much as I had expected by now. I mean, I want to grow ideal buds, but in reality it doesn’t matter as most of it will be used for extraction. So I shouldn't be anxious that I’m just going to end up with a bunch of popcorn, nevertheless, that’s what I am anxious about.

Cut back on the nutes slightly last week when I noticed the slightest browning on a few leaf tips. They seem happy now. Buds are slowly starting to pop. I’m excited and impatient as hell waiting for them.

46d in flower. Just fattening up and getting frosty now. This strain calls for 60-65d in flower, so she’ll get her last nutes this week.

No more nutes, just water going forward. Seedsman says these are ready after 60-75 days in bloom. The trichomes are getting milky now.

No nutes, just flushing. Will be taking a close look at the trichomes this week using the microscope to try and figure out optimal harvest time.

Week 15. Harvest

Happy Harvest Day!

Experimented with LST vs natural growth. LST plant grew 3-4x more roots (pictured), thicker stalk and produced about 4x as much as the plant left to natural growth. I also wanted to demonstrate that one could jump into growing without a bunch of specialty equipment or nutes. I grew a very long time ago and am still deciding how I want to invest in this. I used some inexpensive, blurple, listed as 600w LED grow lights (80 watts actual draw) that I picked up for 40-50% off at amazon. I used commonly available garden center center nutes, and an earth box that I already had filled with Jiffy Seed Starter, perlite, worm casings and bone meal. There wasn’t anything tricky about this grow. I watered the soil from the top more than I should have and ended up with a fungus gnat problem. I took care of the gnats with yellow fly tape and the addition peroxide over the root zone killed the larvae. The buds got so heavy that they started weighting down the branches. I was impressed with how heavy and dense they were when I was trimming them down. Most of this bud is going to be used in making medicinal infusions so I only trimmed off the green parts and all the stem. If it had much sugar on the small leaves, I left it. The 4 biggest buds were trimmed tighter and reserved for smoking. Dried at 55% humidity and 74°F. The buds will be going into cvaults with 62% Boveda packs for the cure. 1st sample smoke, 8 days after harvest was so unexpectedly SMOOOOTH, no negatives. Should be amazing after cure. Taste was creamy cheese. Seemed a little strong to the nose, but was such a smooth tasty smoke. Very laid back, not a head high, but a wonderful buzz and full body relaxation. This will make good medicine. The yield on the LST plant was impressive. She would have taken up as much space as I could have provided her. I’ll be using LST going forward for sure!! I’m on a tight budget, but will be researching better lighting and nutes to maximize my yields in the future.

112 days from seed to harvest. Started seeing some amber trichomes on the topmost buds. Could have harvested the tops and left the lower areas to mature, but I needed to convert my grow space to a drying space. Learned that I need to come up with a 2nd space versatile enough that I can have a separate light cycle going or perhaps dry a harvest while still growing in my main space. i like knowing exactly what went into making my buds and what didn’t. It’s sure easier to grow now than it was a few decades ago. I plan to study lots of other grows on the site and keep learning and growing.
