All three beans have caught up with each other, and by day 5 from pop, as you see there's not a lot of action so far. This is an experiment to see if I can get more variety from the same space. I'm not sure at this stage exactly how I plan to proceed.
All looking good each plant displaying it's own character. Pink Grapefruit and Pineapple Gum both topped with 4 main nodes and WW untopped but with downward branches removed. All the girls are getting on well together
Everything filling out while I'm waiting for the girls to give me some sort of a clue what they intend. I want to work with them but I also want them to work with me.
Lots of training and defoliating today. Trying to let each plant do it's own thing. White Widow is very squat even though she's not topped. OK after no updates for three weeks I've finally caught up and we are all. back on track. Next update 26th May.
Even though they all started only a couple of inches away from each other, they are far apart now. The pink grapefruit grew it's four branches to be longer than Pineapple gum which had a tall stem and it's branches were shorter so they were trained to be pulled apart. The Pink Grapefruit though could be pulled all the way on it's side easily in these pebbles, and suddenly all the four branches were at ground level again.
all three appear to be flipping to flower which is the fastest ever for me, so maybe crowding them has helped that.
Things are getting very interesting, perhaps even a little challenging but it's all well under control. All three are growing as they started, Pink Grapefruit is the most expansive with longer limbs, Pineapple Gum is stockier and a bit curly reminds me of Trippy Gorilla a bit. White Widow is remaining short, and she was not topped. Otherwise all seems fine.
I think I have established that under the right conditions, that is a good hydro set up, that there is no problem growing 3 plants with their roots all tangled up together. In fact I think I may have stumbled onto something here because all three are flowering at the same time and all three are about two week earlier than normal for me. I am suspecting that with the roots all tangled up that they can detect hormones from the other plants which are either causing them to all synchronise, or it might be a mechanism where it flowers earlier if it detects other plants. I'm just guessing here but whatever the reason it appear that it's flowering faster. More testing is required.
I have completely removed the wire as it just didn't seem necessary with these plants. Funnily enough the entire canopy can look like a single plant.
Sort of a transition week now, all three beginning to bud up in sync still. Two days after a big defoliation I pulled the plant out and did an even larger one, but that's at the start of the next week. Just beginning to show some trichomes, in about two weeks I guess I'll have to re assess the situation because there could be a lot of crowded bud.
Had a big accident with Pineapple gum, a branch got caught on something as I moved her and she was stretch to the limit and almost broke of completely. However I bound her up tightly with the green spongy wire and she has shown no adverse reaction at all. Not even a wilted leave. I'm curious to see how it looks at the end of the grow, but what a testament to the resiliency of cannabis.
Also moved Orang Bud back under the viparspectra and moved these three back under the QB96 elite board.
Look at the orange bud next to these three on the right at the exact same age. Only just beginning to flower now, it must be more than a coincidence that all these three are blooming in sync.
All three girls are staying in sync and frosting up nicely. Did some savage defoliation, which is pretty well forced on me due to 80% RH which I cannot control at the moment. This update is a bit late so there's another one due in a few days.
Nothing much happening of note this week except that they have suddenly begun frosting up faster than I expected. Had to do a couple more defoliations just to take care of the humidity. Shot this video today at the 10 week mark. Maybe another 4 or 5 to go.
Everything is looking good. Pink Grapefruit has taken over half and is very fragrant, Pineapple Gum is a lot smaller but still with very pretty buds, and White Widow is looking browner than the other two due to the orange anthers, she's not as headed up yet but is more mature. From here on in I'm going to have to be vigilant for any bud rot. I'll possibly have to do a part harvest in a couple of weeks.
I'm a week late with this so I'll do this week and next week right after. Not a great deal going on other than everything is bulking up. The White Widow is looking just how I like to see my nuggets, small and frosty, the other two are more delicate with lots of undergrowth covered in trichomes which will be good for pressing. I've got a Slug33 Fat Mac on the way ;¬)
The White Widow look about ready with highly crystallised small nuggets, I like this a lot. the other two Pineapple Gum and the big one Pink Grapefruit are close too. Although there's still mainly clear trichomes. All these shots are from the beginning and near the end of week 13.
I'm almost finished this now, this was the largest and the flowers dried pretty much as they looked, very light and fluffy but absolutely jammed with trichonomic wonderfulness. It has a refreshing fruity and yes, grapefruit flavour that is very moorish, not something you get sick of, very easy to smoke on those long autumn afternoons.
She's had time to cure, and I'm savouring this last zip, as now apricot and caramel tones are coming through. And a pretty good yielder too, easily get 12 zip in a pot on her own. She's a very pretty plant as well, maybe susceptible to humidity, but as it was really dry in the final few weeks I was able to really let her go. There's no popcorn buds on this type, there's just A and B buds and then very hi quality larfy stuff that's good for rosin pressing. I'm giving her an 8 because of the very agreeable fresh fruity flavour. The high is more on the cerebral side but I wonder how much of that is all in the mind, literally all in the mind.
Pretty good harvest considering she's only one in three in a pot, but she did take half the space. Been smoking her for a month and I will want to grow her agains sometime. I'm quite liking this looser buds with trichomes spread through them instead of these dense nuggets.
Has a nice diesel flavour which I like and makes no fuss small tight crystal covered nuggets, a very agreeable smoke. Would be good for humid conditions.
Small tight nuggets with very little excess leaves mean this was an easy harvest. There was almost nothing to do as most of any leaves were already trimmed on the plant. Ended up using most of her to test out my new slug33 rosin press
A fluffy plant much like the pink grapefruit but more delicate, she has attractive flowers even if they are a little shy. Strong pineapple flavour comes through, nice in small doses. Unusual but not one of my favourite, however I'm told it's a high CBD strain, but it still get you ripped. Still a pretty good return as she only used a small amount of the pot.
Freddd, It looks like your getting close, so my question is... Will you grow three in one pot Again?
Do you think you lost some percentage of Yield do to one bucket system or is it to soon to tell? Can you get us a pic of the base of all three girls next time around. Thanks
@SHAMMYDOG, Hi Shammy, good to see you around again. Oh definitely I'll be doing more of this, for quite a few reasons. Originally it was to get more variety, so that has been achieved. What was interesting was that they all flowered together and I've just found some latest research that back up my intuition that there's a lot of plant hormone signalling going on that I want to understand https://phys.org/news/2019-07-lateral-root.html
I might just do two in a pot, but I'm also encouraged because you cannot tell from one plant, for example my two orange buds in my DIY grow are both different from each other and also different from my older one.
Now that I have established that there's no impediment to growing more than one as long as he roots have plenty of room, this will be permanent. In fact my DIY grow has shown up some very interesting results.
Looks like it's all going great from here 😎 I have 3 critical orange punch (auto) seeds and I may just adopt a similar method and do a little experimenting of my own next time round. Good luck 🍀
Your last sentense about what's in mind and what's a real effect made me think a bit about it. Thank you. Also a great yeald! almost 200g from one automatic plant. That's insane.
Great job and a great and colorful looking plant!
XOXO
Cremo
@Freddd, I honestly never heard of this breeder. Gotta check it out. These kind of reviews/diaries make me wanna try out new stuff :) Thanks and have an awesome week :)
@Cremo, ha, thanks, yep I got 18 zips off a my Think Big! but it's too much work with nets and stuff. You'd like this Pink Grapefruit too. You should give Short Stuff Jedi Kush a run I think you'll like it a lot, it is a very easy plant to tend and produced small dense crystal covered nuggets. A great plant if you have humidity problems.
@SHAMMYDOG, Hi Shammy, yeah I hit the trichome lottery, I've been in the velvet fog, anyhoo I have been assiduously documenting everything and I have a lot of quite interesting stuff. I'm just about to update the Moby Dick XXL, what a journey that was. It got to the point where I just wanted to throw it out, it just went on and on, with a smell like those super strong pine disinfectants. Long story short, it has ended up being my al time favourite. Lot's more good stuff. the DIY is finished, and more have been started, so strap yourself and I'll see if I can get off my lazy ass and get some good cannabis pr0n up.
P.S. if I won the lottery I'd pay someone to organise the diary and I'd just grow the weed.
@@DaveG, thanks man. Yeah, I just like to debunk all the myths, I was told it couldn't be done so that's like a red flag to a bull to me. I always like to learn from each grow.
@SHAMMYDOG, I've been a bit overwhelmed the past couple of weeks, I'm going to do a big catch up today with all the diaries. Interesting question because that is one of the areas I am investigating as my aim is to reduce everything to it's most simple form.
I used to change every two weeks, but these days I go for a bit longer by topping up. For example they might be in the growing phase say for two weeks, and I'll have them on a 1 to 2 to 1 or Micro Gro and Bloom. Then for the transition I'll want 1 to 1 to 1, so I'll just at Micro and Bloom only to bring it up to the desired ratio.
I will also decide by monitoring how quickly the plant eat up the nutrients as judged by the ppm.
It's important to not get caught up in the hype of ppm nutes, lights, etc, mostly it's people simply repeating stuff that is not true. My DIY grow shows how futile it can be, you see two orange buds, completely different and the difference is not due to anything other than the plants themselves, they are under the same lights the same nutrients the same pot.
Now imagine if those two beans were grown under different lights or you did something different to the nutrients, then you'd feel pretty sure that that is what the difference was, but it would be incorrect!
Freddd, It looks like you might be averaging 15 weeks or so on your autos, which in my humble opinion is because of your growing system. If you look at some other diaries, they finish up weeks earlier with a 1/4 of your yield. It makes sense, a bigger plant will take longer to finish. So question... Would you consider growing a photo period for an extra 4 weeks or so to see if it is worth it? Do think there would be any difference in quality? Thanks
@SHAMMYDOG, Hi Shammy, yeah it seems that 13 weeks would be an absolute minimum for me. But every plant I grow, is different even from the same packet of beans. I expect 14 weeks or more. My current Moby Dick is already at 11 weeks and looks like she has another 7 or weeks to go. As far as quality goes, Autos are every bit as good as photoperiods, no question. I used go grow photoperiod from clones 20 years ago, and I would never go back to photoperiod now just for the wonderful convenience of not having a dark cycle. That is such a pain in the butt.
freddd thanks for quick response . I guess my question is ... as soon as you put a young seedling on your drip system, how many times a day does it drip and for how long and does that change with the size of the plant.
Also how do you keep your roots from clogging your exit line back to your rez
@SHAMMYDOG, you have good timing. Yes good questions. The germinated seedling is quite delicate in the clay balls, until the roots get established. When the plant is established it's doesn't matter if a few jets don't work evenly but when it's a seedling I like to make sure that the plug is near a jet just so it's always damp near it. I'll have it on continuously for a few days then I'll have it on for 15 minutes every hour. Once the roots are well established it really doesn't matter much but 15/hour is good, then maybe give it 15/ every two or three hours at night. The roots don't tend to clog up the drain, but that's why I make it a 19mm. Sometimes I'll poke a stick through. Or even turning the pot or lifting it will pull any roots out, once they get established they tend to not clog up.
You should check out my DIY grow, it's working out quite well and very easy to make. I'll be starting something new in a couple of weeks and I'll note what I do with the seedling.
@SHAMMYDOG, That's not really a question for me because that's more of a soil query isn't it. This is one of the reasons I don't do soil you can never tell what is going on. However I am now planting my seed directly into an eazyplug without pre soaking the seed. So the eazy plug always keeps water around the roots.
@Deeganja, cheers, I have to admit I"m getting quite excited now. The Orange Bud was going to be my main chance and this three in a pot was meant to be a 'see what happens' kinda grow but roles have reversed at the moment.
