Just know it's more art than science. All sorts of things can cause odd readings that are not representative of reality. Whether you do soil slurries or test runoff etc... be consistent about how you do it. Don't react to the information, initially. Learn what 'normal' is for you methods of measurement -- also assumes healthy plants long-term... Then you can react to things that deviate from that norm and maybe avoid a problem before it starts... but i wouldn't trust the exact value it spits out. Level of moisture will greatly impact it (probably best after a watering rather than as it is nearing the next watering). If testing runoff whether you do it early or late in the runoff will impact it. If you make a slurry, the pH of the water you add and how much volume you add will greatly impact it.... Greater familiarity is needed than just measuring it in order to use that infor in an effective way. Heck, the probe physically bumping into something could cause a whack-a-doo reading.. some dissolving bit of nutrition in proximity to the probe, a chunk of dried up solute if testing runoff etc etc.. pH balance anything before you add it, and stick to normal watering practices and you'll be fine. The microbes in your soil are going to mitigate and at least partially dictate resting pH.

RepeatOffender Will reduce light to 11 hours/day. Proper soil prep cannot be understated: Pot levels, medium mix, pH prep, knowing how much water a pot requires based on what it can hold and uptake by plants. Keeping up with this diary (2X daily on a spreadsheet) properly emphasized that need. Iron Sulfate made a minimal difference in pH readings. Switching to pH Down for Growth & Bloom.

RepeatOffender Hoping to see some flower development during the week. Thankful for mild wind as the boxes are like sails. Will bungee down tomorrow. Have been regretting my first grow was not with auto-flowering seeds. The learning curve for an outdoor grow with photoperiod plants has forced many reactions. Pretty bad setback: Had to build a top for one of the boxes. Light got in. Then the box fell on the plants and broke off the top 8" on two of them. Looking into purchasing a greenhouse to contend with windy days. pH levels are good now. To test accurately, I have to leave the meter in the soil for five minutes before hitting the measure button. If I test right away, the numbers are in the mid-eights. If I wait, they fall into and remain in the target range of 6.2 - 6.8.

RepeatOffender Have had some ups and downs. Not happy losing the top 8" of my two tallest plants. Got clumsy and put a chemical burn on some fan leaves and the one flower. Have pruned yellowing leaves and one small/low flower.

RepeatOffender So many things I'm learning. pH levels are stable now. Temp spiked today. Taking frequent photos and comparing day-to-day is a great teacher. Covering the boxes with a tarp to protect from moisture and adding another level of darkness during the 13 hour dark cycle. Keep having bad luck with heat and high winds this week. Ordered a 150 x 150 x 200 Vivosun Grow Tent, in lieu of a greenhouse. More versatility in that solution.

RepeatOffender Plants getting a bit less direct sunlight in the afternoons due to strong winds. Best thing I've done this grow was to keep the blackout boxes covered with a tarp. Innovation has been a major factor in keeping this grow going. Now I know I should have made only one box (wider and a foot taller) based on the size of my balcony. Grow tent came in yesterday and I got it all setup in the shed (unheated). I will likely try starting a seed or two in there and see if I can grow during the winter months. Wound up starting 4 pots and will make a diary for each. It has been another blazing hot week. No clouds at all in the forecast. Plants are growing more thirsty and I can tell they're sucking all the nutrients I give them from the soil. Had no clue how tiny trichomes actually are (microns in size). Now that I've got a jeweler's loop I can actually see them. Am seeing a shortcoming with the blackout boxes. They don't provide air circulation. Gonna have to trim to try and combat the humidity. Plants are becoming very aromatic.

She love you long time before you harvest... long time. Not even worth scoping trichomes at this point. like others said, calyxes nowhere near mature and don't look at trichomes on leaves. When you can't perceive the calyxes plumping anymore, that's when you can start scoping trichomes... before that is just for fun or learning or useless.

The plant in your diary is not ready, not even close..........it still needs about 4 weeks! Once there are 98-99% brown pistils/hairs, you will be in the harvest zone.............you are nowhere near that yet.

I had a look, and personally I wouldn't think about harvesting yet. 🌱 I can see what you mean, some of the trichomes already appear cloudy/milky. But looking at the overall bud structure and development, they still look like they have quite a bit of bulking and maturing left to do. Especially if you're only around week 4 of flower, I'd expect at least another 2 weeks, and quite possibly longer. Also make sure you're checking trichomes mainly on the actual calyxes rather than the sugar leaves, as those can mature much earlier and give you a misleading impression. I'd be patient for now and let the flowers develop. Watch the buds swell, the pistils mature and then keep checking the calyx trichomes as you get closer. They look like they still have more to give! 😊🌱

RepeatOffender I thought the buds were going to be much bigger. Might be seeing cloudy trichomes because I don't 'really' know what I'm looking at. Another BLAZING hot day and tomorrow's going to be even hotter. Thanks to everyone helping me along with this grow.
