Germination: paper towel method
-Balcony/window seal grow in Canna Coco +30% Perlite
-Very small plastic pot, didn't say how many liters, only by the measurements of the pot. Guessing around 2 liters or so. (?)
-Sprinkled a very light amount of BioGrow and mixed in with the coco only a few nuckles deep before planting the seed in it. I figure it would spread out better than as a top dressing.
-Only 1 seed germinated out of 2.
-Finally lifted out of the coco on day 3
-Started to add a little bit of Calmag Plus. Out of my first 4 grows in coco, I'm beginning to think that adding calmag and iron the sooner, the better. Out of 4 different strains and three different phenos of one strain, every plant has shown some inner yellowing by the second or third week which makes me believe that I am super deficient in iron and maybe some other things. I usually waited until at least 14 days or so to start adding nutes, but by then I already saw some deficiencies..even at bringing down the ph to 5.6 at times instead of 5.8.. so now I think I'll go a little heavier on the calmag earlier to see if it makes a difference. I always flushed the Canna coco before I used it. Maybe not enough, I don't know.
-Green algae was really starting to show itself and lots of green over the perlite.
-The leaves don't seem to be forming particularly well and don't seem to have a solid plan. Some parts are looking a little wilted, if that's the right word? They are getting plenty of outdoor wind/air flow. Definitely enough to keep mold at bay, but given that the coco isn't super dry and the plastic pot doesn't allow as much air flow as the rest of the fabric pots, and the algae formation, it is time to significantly lessen up the watering until it really dries up.
-Took some metal tweezers and stabbed the holes on the bottom to give the coco a little better drainage and air flow to help dry things up a bit
-Scraped the top .5"/1.25cm of the coco and perlite to try to break up the algae, to have the greenest parts facing down into the pot so it could get less light, and also get some more air to the top on the substrate to help things dry up a bit and have some more oxygen. I'm not sure how much or if at all the algae is affecting the roots, but hopefully I can keep it at bay.
@ElevatedNoob, Thanks, you too! The first seed didn't pop, but the 2nd one has sprouted a tiny bit, so I will take a look at it tomorrow and hopefully it's long enough to plant! 👌
@Pointlessmike, Cool, thanks! It's going to be in a very small pot and will be a challenge if the sun keeps on hiding like it has been for weeks. No more space inside the tent. Hope yours goes good too!
