The beginning of Week 4 & the 5th set of leaves have appeared and the plants are 80mm tall, even though I buried the stem a bit while transplanting. Iโ€™m happy with the growth. The stems are thickening up and becoming a nice light green colour. Iโ€™m adding perlite around the stem about 30mm deep into the coir(see last photo), to try to keep the stem light and airy, hopefully preventing fungus, gnat larvae and too much moisture collecting around the base of the stem, above the roots. While still giving support to the stem while it grows. Does anyone have any thoughts or experience on this? The first few photos are from the beginning of the week. The last few are later in the same week showing growth of the first set of 5 point leaves and branches starting to develop.

Is it beneficial to put perlite around the stem (see last photo) to prevent moisture, fungus, gnats?

Hello StealthOz, first of all your girl is looking good. To answer your question, i think its not that beneficial the way you put it down around the stem. Main use of perlite is to mix it with the subrate of usage. In your case coco, and only to make sure that there are airgaps in the substrate for better drainage. My guess that your not transplanting this girl, maybe when you have a next grow you mix in the perlite with your coco to acheave that. You can use different ratios of mix. I recommend atleast 30% perlite 70% coco. I use a ratio of 60% coco 40% perlite myself and it works great. Hope this was an helpfull answer my friend. Keep on growing. Peace ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿพ

@HydroGrowLED, check out my new grow Skunks & Kush, the seedlings went from nothing to plants with 7 nodes in just 3 weeks. The seedlings love the warmth and seek the light.

@HydroGrowLED, yeah great. They were very cheap to buy and donโ€™t really impact my electricity bill at all. At just under 250watts they arenโ€™t the most powerful lights, but the veg chamber is 780mm in height, 780mm in width and 520mm deep, so it lights up the small space quite well.

@StealthOz, Iโ€™m watching along to see how productive for seedlings it is ๐Ÿ˜Ž๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿ’ช

i count from when i activate the seeds, but truth is there's no convention, most folks start like 2 weeks in or post seedling stage , on here it's often that folks will start like you , at ground break... truth is the calendar record is just data, write it down the way it best helps you by asking yourself what am i using the info for. Long story short : looks good to me man, looks quick even ! ๐Ÿ‘Š

@CRiSPrGrow, thanks for the info. No wonder some plants on some grow diaries look very well developed at an early age if the day count starts at post-seedling stage. Iโ€™ve heard before that the vegetation stage starts at the third node appearing. If that was the case my 6 week diary entry would really be the 4th week! ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

@CRiSPrGrow, ok great thanks. I added more light since my last grow and keeping it fungus gnat free is helping with the growth. Thankyou ๐Ÿค™๐Ÿผ

ok iam wantig to get more correct. Perlit got to be mixed under the whole growmedium if you want to have a much better aeriation. In only using coco you dont have to fear for fungus gnats... they dont like coco coir to lay the eggs into, they love soil. and if you have soil components in your mix , you can go with a layer of fine quartz sand on the whole surface of the pot. Not only around the stem. if you use sand as layer, your watering got to go from the bottom

@Mrs_Larimar, ok great thanks. I do have a bit of perlite, vermiculite, propagation sand and charcoal mixed in with the coir, but itโ€™s about 70% coir. I put some charcoal in the bottom of the pots for drainage too. Good to know about the coir and fungus gnats, thankyou. I found I just had heaps of trouble in the past with organic soils as the fungus gnats Re-appeared time and time again. No gnats as yet this time! Thankyou for the info ๐ŸŒž

Iam doing my own soilmix too. its like 3 parts Compostsoil ( full of benefical stuff) 3Parts Peatmoss ( saves Water) 1 part Vermiculite ( satbilizes the ph)... you can use dolomite lime too 1,5 Parts perlite ( drainage) 1 part coco ( fluffy+drainage 1Part worm Castings ( my Worm produce the castings in coco medium) That is the bsaic reciepe, and even the sesitivest plants love it

Wow, you just about had qctual buds on the plant for 4 or at the very most 5 weeks and then cut them. Have a look, count from wen you first see actual buds and count till you cut them. They had at least another 4 weeks to go.
