Excited to get my hands on some Dutch Passion seeds! Growing 2x Glueberry OG photoperiods in 60L of Freedom Farms Organic Classic soil each. The pot size is 70L so there's some room for mulching or cover crops if I have time before these head into their final pots. Soaked the seeds in reverse osmosis ozonated water and in 24 hours the seeds were still floating on the surface, but with tap roots ready to go! I moved to paper towel for another 24 hours and into soil 24 hours after that. They were happy to pop out by the next day (Day 1 was 27 October 2019). These plants seem to have a lot of vigour, I'm looking forward to watching them grow! Peace, fellow growers! 😀✌️

The weather has been quite overcast and starting rain a lot, with very hot days inbetween. Leaves are a little warped on the edges, perhaps from the moisture resting on them at night? Started a very mild feed, still using RO water for now.

It's been a week of non-stop rain! Moved them to their final pots and applied 5ml of mycorrhizal fungi per plant at transplant and then watered with 20ml/L kelp and RO water. 500ml each. The leaves are looking a bit lime-greenish, but I'm guessing that could be from the lack of sun - they should be getting enough nitrogen for now, but maybe I'm wrong. I'll step it up by 1ml/L on the next feed. See you next week 🙌

I started topping this week, the plan is to mainline these. I've never tried this before, but I think it's working out okay so far! A very strange spider came to visit. Looks like it's the same family as a whip spider. Cheers for now :)

Goodness me, what a week. I stuffed up my first ever attempt at mainlining. I got the first topping right, the defoliation etc, then I started some mild bending of the first shoots coming from 1st topping, and I accidentally snapped one of the branches, not right off but like 90% of the way. I tied it up and at first it was wilting. I kept spraying during the day with RO water, but it was hot so I moved her under cover. By that night, the branch had perked up and appeared to be fine! BUT - the over the next 2 days it just kept wilting and it seems to me that the plant is using energy to try and keep that branch alive. So I literally cut my losses, straightened up the remaining branch to become a main stem, and topped again, resetting that awful experience and moving forward! Onward and upward, folks. Lesson learned (well I actually did this stuff up on 2 plants - so EVENTUALLY lesson learned) - don't start training until there's some meat on them bones! The silver lining is that I might have some clones to work with from the cuttings. I've never done this before, but I'm using jiffy pellets, a cake dome. reverse osmosis water that I'm spraying morning and night. It's been a few days and they seem happy - I hope they root 🙏 I'll be better I promise 😝

Well that first topping on number 1 that went south, is working out. Turns out that if you bend a topped branch back to become a main stem, it comes back very thick and strong! You just lose a bit of time for recovery. I made another whoopsie. At the second topping, I accidentally removed one of the 4 needed growth tips. Again, doing things too early without there being enough "meat" yet and my very sharp blade took off more than intended. This means I either have to reconfigure the mainline that I'm trying to create, or repeat the mistake on the other side to keep the symmetry, again straightening out a topping that went wrong, and re-topping at the next opportunity. I think keeping symmetry is more important. Being my first time doing this, and also not knowing how early or late this strain might flower, I'm hoping I get enough veg time in to finish my base. It's a bit difficult to train with the clearance from the ground to the first topping being quite high, so I'm going to create a T-piece stake that I peg alongside the main stem. Have a happy week, friends 😀

Further to last week's accidental removal of 1 of the 4 needed growth tips for #2 , I decided to mirror the mistake on the other side to keep symmetry, and I'll top again at the next node. It means that the second set of tips will be parallel to the first, but I guess I'll have to figure out the mainline base as I go. I want to go for 16 colas here or possibly more, but I'm not sure what the best configuration will be for a 70L pot - with an unknown amount of veg time until flower. We hit our summer solstice at 22 December, which puts us at 14 hours of daylight, but it will start to decrease to 12 hours by mid March 2020 - so flowering could start any time, I don't know this strain, so it's a guess. Succesfully topped #1, so that's at 4 colas so far. I'm guessing I have at least 2 months more of veg here, but who knows, hopefully I can get all my topping done soon so I can just leave them to grow out into fat colas! The clones I took from earlier toppings are taking root! I have another 70L pot to fill, I'm hoping one of these clones can be my third plant for this grow, rather than popping another seed. Lastly, planted some red clover and alfalfa to sprout a little before I pack down some alfalfa hay. Summers here get really hot so I need to stop the soil surface from drying out, and add in some organic matter while I am at it. Peace out! ✌️✌️✌️

Did some more topping, had some nice sun this week and the girls are looking healthy! I got more roots on more clones, so I'm choosing one to be my third plant of this strain to ride through to next year. Added some alfalfa hay as a mulch.

Great week so far, topped each one for the 4th time, so I'm at 16 colas and they're responding well. Not defoliating too aggressively, keeping lots of fan leaves on close to the growth tips. Not sure if I should do another topping or if 16 is a good number to stop and begin pulling them outwards in using a hoop/ring around the sides. I guess I'll wait and see how they grow out. Clone is doing very well too! Peace ✌️🌱

This strain is really responding well to topping, defoliation and everything I throw at it. Keeping a steady nutrient regime that's simple and letting nature do it's thing as well. The clone is doing great as well. The mulch is helping to keep the soil surface moist and they all seem pretty happy. Happy plants, happy me :)

Where the plants were originally, there was a security light on at night, which I wasn't too worried about in veg, but I decided to move these to a dark place that has no light pollution anyway. Immediately after moving them they showed first signs of pistils. I find this a bit odd because where I stay, we're at our maximum daylight hours for the year, at just less than 14 hours of daylight hours. Perhaps this strain is sensitive to the slight decrease since the summer solstice (22 December). Whatever is going on in there, they're starting to tease me with some wonderful smells. Anyway, now is the time to do my last stage of mainlining - opening them up with some LST or supercropping and fixing them to a ring. I haven't quite figured that out yet, but best I do it fast so I can leave them to flower in peace. 🏃‍♂️🏃‍♂️🏃‍♂️🏃‍♂️🏃‍♂️ I don't think I'm going to do any training on the clone, I'd like to see what this plant looks like naturally. They're happy and showing a major growth spurt! Peace out, fellow growers ✌️😜

Here we go... lots of pistils appearing. Time to open up the branches! I needed a plant ring/cage and I haven't had time to think about constructing one yet - but I happen to have this old fire pit housing that was getting thrown out. What a great purpose for this old thing :) It sits a little lower than I'd hoped, but for my #2 plant, I decided to go a bit extreme on the training. I had to do some high stress bending to get it into shape, but it recovered by the morning. The main branch junctions did get a bit split in the process, but taped them up quickly! After a few days, the plants healed very nicely in those joins. Later this week - for #1, I made a plant cage out of some galvanized wire, PVC piping and some electrical connectors. This one is going to be less extreme, since I only got started towards the end of this week and flowering is happening really fast, so less stress on this one. Plus, it's fun to do things differently on each plant. The clone is also in flower and going crazy. Red ants have decided to make home in my plant bags. I'm not super worried about them, and using cayenne pepper and cinnamon to keep it under control without doing anything harmful to my plants. No more crazy training on these plants. I'm gonna sit back and leave them now till the end. Hoping for some magic colas! Peace, fellow growers ✌️

The weather is getting really hot and humid, and these girls are getting thirstier! Feeding 8L at a time, and the bags are still getting dry pretty quickly. The alfalfa mulch is helping to keep the surface layer moist. It's amazing to see the same strain, given the exact same soil, nutrients and watering, perform differently. I'm getting much greener leaves on the "lower" mainlined plant. The genetics could just be slightly different, or the supercropping could have created a nutrient super-highway - i have no Idea. The taller one isn't as green and lush, I'm not sure if it's normal during flower to yellow a bit, but I'll keep giving a bit of fish/nitrogen with feeds for a while and monitor it. My nutrients have some blackstrap molasses in them, but I'm adding 4ml/L to each nutrient feed now as well. Cheers for now 👍

Things are mostly going well with these 3. It's been extremely hot and humid, and they've been thirsty! Number 1 has been yellowing drastically, very evenly from the bottom upwards. It's like she's drawing on the reserves in the fan leaves, for some reason not getting enough from the soil perhaps. I upped the fish emulsion, and gave an entire extra feed of everything this week, so there is definitely no lack of nitrogen and phosphorous. It could be calmag deficiency, but I have been giving a healthy dose of blackstrap molasses for a while. I tried a teeeeny bit of epsom salts on just this plant, 1 tablespoon per gallon. I don't want to use too much of it since it could hurt the microbial life, but at this point I'm open to options. She could also be rootbound, possibly 70L is not enough grow medium? Although the other 2 are fine. I have only a few weeks left, hopefully there's enough goodness left in the fan leaves for her to take whatever she can't get from the roots. I do also have an ant colony living in the bag. Hopefully they aren't causing problems. Cheers for now!

#1 Has started yellowing much sooner than expected. With 4 weeks to go, I'm not sure how much of a problem that is - what happens if I can't fix that? The other 2 are not affected and have same soil, sun and nutrient schedules. Bud production is going strong. Any remedy ideas?

Hey friend, Your outdoor is looking great...but definitely unusual the 1 yellowing plant. I had 2 possible ideas, first maybe that one plant is more hungry than the others and needs higher feedings. Or hows the ph? I know that can cause a variety of yellow leaves but i would expect the others to have it. The any colony however i do think should be fixed because they can go in and disturb the root system, i would use diamataceous earth since it will kill the bugs and also provide silica which is great for plants and helps in a large variety of ways. Happy flowering

Howdy folks. This week had some turbulent weather, and is really testing the resistances of this strain. The days have either been hot and humid, or raining non-stop. Not exactly what you want late flower, but you get what you get with outdoors! Spotted a few swollen calyxes so there must be pollen floating around. My neighbour just discovered a male plant over his side of the fence. Crossing my fingers that there were no open pollen sacks before he pulled it. Apparently the pods were tiny and hadn't opened yet but I never got to see and verify that. But... this is outdoors, and the area is very outdoorsy/foresty - so there's bound to be loads of stray males in the area. Hoping that these don't turn into seed factories 🤞 What's the latest a flowering plant can get pollinated? Are you ever in the "safe zone"?

It's been a bumpy week weather wise. Extreme sun then extreme rain. Thankfully, it appears this strain can take it! They don't appear to have been too badly pollinated and it looks like they have resumed bud production again, which is great. Trichome production is going strong and the buds are getting more and more solid each day. I think next week will be my last feed, then I'll just water until the end - which I think will be a week or so after that. Getting close to the finish line!

This was an eventful week! Sorry, there's a lot of pics to go through. If you made it all the way down here, thanks for taking the time to check them out :) So, this week's weather has been extremely hot (almost lost a think different auto to heat), then extremely rainy. After discovering a bit of bud rot on each of these girls, I'm nervous. #1 is ready enough to be an insurance policy for me so I decided to harvest her. The other 2 could be harvested, but I don't think the trichomes are entirely cloudy enough. I prefer less amber, but I don't want them to be clear, so they are just a few days off. One of the reasons for chopping #1, was that if the rain picked up (which it did) it would be easier to manage crisis with 2 plants and I don't have too much space under my patio to house more than 2 of them. These grow bags can be really heavy to move as well , especially once they're watered. I'll have more info in my harvest week, I didn't record any wet weights - because why weigh branches that are getting chucked? And also it's depressing to see that weight drastically reduce in drying. Only really concerned with dry vs cured weight. It appears that the rain is done and that we're in for a sunny stretch. Either way, next week is probably going to be harvest time for the others! Exciting!

This week saw the end of the "in ground" part of this journey with the Glueberry OG's. I moved the plants outside in the sun, and back under cover before rain and nightfall. Eventually the rain took a break and I was able to finish these off in the sun. The nights are starting to get cooler as we approach autumn but the days are still hot, so there is a lot of condensation on these plants in the morning. Fantastic conditions for bud rot, which has had me worried this week. It's something I've just come to accept growing in this part of South Africa. Even local sativas that are tall and lanky with whispy buds can get affected here too, so I'm REALLY impressed that these rock solid sticky indica like buds have made it this far. Ideally I would have liked to push another 3-5 days but each day I leave it, there's more rot discovered. I have pushed a bit further already, just to get the quality up at the sacrifice of a small bit of quantity. So, both last remaining girls have been chopped. I've shared some harvest pics over the last 2 weeks, but stay tuned for the harvest week next update and I'll share all the details. Slight spoiler - #1 has finished drying and gone into cure, weighing in at over 200 grams and I'm expecting similar results from these 2 girls. Happy times 🙌😵

This grow was fun and rewarding. Right from the start, these girls showed their great genetics by sprouting faster than anything I've ever seen. They were extremely eager! For the first time, I tried mainlining as well as cloning. It was great to only need to use 2 seeds and get 3 great plants of equal yield. #1 and her clone (#3) ended up being slightly more wispy, yet #2 was a much denser bud. I never had a single sign of powdery mildew, and believe me, these plants went through extreme rain, extreme heat and everything inbetween, as well as insanely high humidity levels. I maybe lost 2% of my yield to bud rot - which is very acceptable. I had to harvest slightly earlier than I thought to prevent further bud rot, but I'm more of a sativa, cerebral head high lover (with a good whack of body buzz too), so I didn't want loads of amber trichomes - so these turned out perfect for me. My thoughts on mainlining: Does it increase yield? Considering that #1 and #3 (it's clone which had no training) yielded the same amount of bud, I'd say no. In fact, if you consider the veg time you lose when mainlining, after all that topping and sidenode snipping, defoliation etc - I believe a regularly grown plant would have yielded much, much more. But - do I think it's worth doing? Absolutely. Reason being, you get a lower sitting plant with less larfy buds. There's more airflow so there's less chance of mildew and rot and you also get a 360 degree view of your plant. I could inspect the buds closely and easily and picked up on issues much better than if the plant was a towering monster that I couldn't reach the top of it to inspect. I feel like the quality of the bud is more consistent doing it this way. The strain is notably thirsty, #1 seemed to just not get enough nutes from my medium and feeds and started yellowing the fan leaves early on. The other 2 never seemed to have that problem though. 70L of medium may have been too little as well, so I may need to consider bigger grow bags for next season, like 100L +. The early yellowing could have also been a sign of her being root bound. I would imagine the indoor guys and girls could push more trichome development from this bud and get even more gooey menaces out of theirs, but for outdoor growers in challenging climates, this is a fantastic choice! I'm super happy with how these turned out. As the world goes crazy stockpiling hand sanitizer and toilet paper, I've been able to stock up on an awesome smoke :) I highly recommend this to all indoor and outdoor growers. There is an auto version of this as well which I'm sure is great as well. Thank you to Dutch Passion, for creating this marvel and to the Grow Diary community for following along - and all the words of encouragement. Cheers, fellow growers - and be safe out there.
