It is time to pull the trigger and just go for a new diary, lets see the consequences. This is a continuation of BlackJack by Nirvana.
Day 57.
A couple storylines, its mother was over nuted and will yield far less than deserved. This clone suffered through the great winter temperatures of 2019 (check other grows) and so it yellowed and suffered for weeks. Now that my tent has been warmed, it seems BlackJack is regaining green!
I have repotted twice now, the most recent being to start things off with this diary. I used 15 HP Pro Mix soil: 5 Fox Farms Happy Frog Soil: 5 worm castings, and Myke Herbs and Vegetables mycorrhizae.
My light setup is a 300 actual watt full spectrum LED, with another smaller pod that is 1/6th that again, over seedlings.
Day 64 since cloning the first of the BlackJack trio. If you could have seen the yellow before I rectified my heating, weeks ago, and then the first week posted, and then to this week, astonishing. Clearly full of nutes, probably a bit excess, but thats all good. Water, time, light, nothing better. I did some LST after photos, you can sort of see in the group shot. Onward!
Day 71 since cloning the first Black Jack of the trio. I had mentioned LST last week, but BJ1 was the one I did not train. It was shorter at the time, and so I’m doing something different for fun. Its pairing up with a White Widow from another distributor, and they will be the quicker to go to flower compared to the other clones of this gen. I did top one time when I transplanted to a final container.
My soil amendment mix was primarily: 30 HP Pro Mix: 5 Fox Farms Happy Frog: 5 worm castings: 2 ASB Greenworld Sheep Manure Compost: 2 ASB Greenworld Black Earth: 2 ETI Greenhouse Gold Seafood Compost: 1 Blood and Bonemeal pellets: 1 Green Gaia mineralized phosphate (guano): 1 alfalfa meal compost: 1 pulverized egg shells; and Myke Herbs and Vegetables mycorrhizae.
With recent amendment problems I ever so slightly diluted the mix, and I also layered it much more, that is, put the hot mix at the bottom and mostly filled it with HP Pro Mix soil. It was already on the verge of excess as it had quickly recovered from deficiencies.
Day 78 since being cloned. So, I did a little hack job with the first of a trio of Black Jack clones. Let me backup, things were going really well this week. I’d say the plant was in excess of nutrients (soil amendment) ... but that can be flushed and used up. It wasn’t in shock, just cruising. It was gaining height faster than my setup would handle so I decided to top it again. I liberally cut it hoping to really make an even, short, bushy canopy - I was shocked by the thickness of stem I cut; it was unintentional. Regrettable, but the plant just needs to recover. I feel this move exposes the excess nutrients more as the young growth have thin leaves showing signs of excess. Also, super dark leaves. I can see some phosphorous streaking which may be due to imbalance or lockout. Just water and time for now; don’t worry, o’ reader.
Day 85 for the BlackJack clone. Everything is going well, but I have to say its not an impressive looking plant. My plans have been erratic and haphazard, and I’ve just hacked away with scissors. It clearly is swimming in soil amendment but I just keep feeding it water and new growth slowly uses it up. Nothing but waiting at this time 👍🏻
Day 92 for this BlackJack clone. Time is just ticking away as it gets hacked, regrows, hacked again, etc. Green is transitioning as it adds more amendment and fills the container. I’m just using water and I don’t have any big concerns. I’m getting with cloning, I should take some before I move the plant, as the switch is nearing. I would have a window to flower starting next weekend, which would be five weeks in the hot soil. (And it would go another two weeks without food in stretch). Everything is looking good and crowded!
Day 96 for BlackJack, the first of a trio. Quick turn around because its time to jump into flower. I know, it seems early, and it likely is judging by stem size, but I have quite the rotation ongoing. I won’t feed anything for stretch, or nitrogen in general, and so I’m not worried - it will have time to use up the amendment is probably hasn’t accessed yet. Its about the same size as another plant on the go, and so the pairing is natural.
I thought I would have time for clones but I didn’t, and I’ll look to take from other Black Jacks. After photos I chopped anything that had no chance of penetrating the canopy.
Day 103 since cloning BlackJack. One week of flowering complete, seven weeks to go. My only reference for BlackJack went nine weeks. Stretch has begun, and good thing as this plant needs to stretch to get light. My tent is crowded. Just water so far. Temperature circulation was becoming a problem in my veg. tent so I put another plant into flower, basically ON BlackJack Clone 2019 (I).
My flowering lighting consists of two 300Watt full spectrum LEDs identical to my veg. tent. I have 96 watts of yellow LED bulbs to supplement the spectrum of the big boys. I also have two custom made light pods, 50 watts each, of a mix of LEDs (I only have an estimation of spectrum). The tent is the same standard hung mylar.
Day 110 since cloning BlackJack. Two weeks of flowering complete, six weeks to go. Stretch is just finishing up and the bud sites are forming, time to start food. Still plenty of green left so no worries. I expect things to get exciting soon. I’m intrigued by the slight pink once again forming. Both angles of the group shot at the end.
Day 117 since cloning BlackJack. Three weeks of flowering complete, five weeks to go. Bad news for my tent, but nothing new. I had to completely ditch a plant in flower which revealed yet another massive soil amendment miscalculation. I have to assume BlackJack has too much nitrogen in the soil still. This will likely effect the outcome. Though I haven’t fed nitrogen to this one, other plants had the same treatment and was able to slowly find more and more of the nutrient. I will attempt to irrigate liberally to wash everything through. I did feed plant food earlier this week, 0-10-10 Alaskan Morbloom with blackstrap molasses, Plant Prod MJ Spike (CalMag) and Earth Alive Big Blue Wave. I am finished with the latter product as I don’t need added salts messing with my current f***ups. I also have changed my timer back to 12/12. I was intrigued by the expedited start to flowering, but overall the reduced yield wasn’t worth it.
Day 124 since BlackJack was cloned. Four weeks of flowering complete, four weeks to go. I still think this is limited by my “noobness,” but I do like the bulbs of bud. There is much potential to gain some mass. I’ve guessed that the colouring is from secondary elements, nothing fancy but excess. I’ve eliminated Earth Alive Big Blue Wave across the board. This plant is due some food tomorrow. I’m getting some nice, sweet aromas. This plant has really sprawled its branches. I defoliated a bit after photos.
Day 131 for BlackJack. Five weeks of flowering complete, three to go. Plump little budlets which are really going to be quality me thinks. I’m getting a deep sweet smell, very nice. It got water today and will have to dry out for one last feeding. I’ll try to get some leaf fade before the end. Really enjoying the visuals. I got heavy rain, and the flushing, has my humidity at a very high value.
Day 138 for this BlackJack clone. Six weeks of flowering complete, two weeks to go. Things are looking good. I’m in the process of flushing with water. The buds are a deep purple and giving off a nice sweet, black licorice like smell. I have another BlackJack further back in rotation that is similar so things seem in line. Buds are starting to sag and just hang all over other plants.
Day 145 for BlackJack. Seven weeks of flowering complete, one week to go. Just flushing away and I’m starting to get some leaf fade. The buds are finishing up nicely albeit quite veggie. Not much time left! Unsure if I’ll do another post so this may be the last look.
Day 150 for this BlackJack clone. Eight weeks of flowering complete, this it! I continue to flush, and I usually give about 24 hours of darkness before harvest. Should get some nice little buds off this one.
This is Nirvana’s BlackJack. Not the first time growing, but this is my first clone brought to harvest.
The only issues during veg. were in the beginning stages of cloning when my basement was very cold which slowed things down. My regret would perhaps be my rush into flower both in terms of using up soil amendment and allowing the plant to gain more (stem) size.
Flower was a pleasure and no issue, this was a small, compact plant. Maybe, during the early periods, a bit crowded in the flower tent.
Smells growing are subtle and sweet, leaning towards a licorice rather than fruit or candy. Product smell and taste is sweet, with a sort of pungency, or sharpness, that keeps it from being primarily taste driven. Trichome production is only average, not caked in crystal. Plenty of resin.
The effects are nice with a decent impact. I would agree with Nirvana’s assessment that it is sativa based, I find it easily wipes you out. I readily use before bed to get nice and sleepy.
Disappointed in yield but I would consider this a small indoor plant, the smallest stage past sea of green style. Overall, even though it was outperformed by a similar sized plant, this BlackJack (and others) confirm to me it can usually yield a good amount. The buds get dense. I also was experimenting with lighting, and so the first three weeks of flower were only at ten hours of daylight, which likely limited plant size.
I have plenty of more BlackJack on the go, so settle in and enjoy a nice vape. If I can get the yield up the score goes up.
I gave around 24 hours of darkness before harvest. No issues with trim, it was a very easy job. Good leaf structure.
I budwashed before hanging to dry. Dip and swirl in a container of baking soda, lemon juice and water; dip in a container of water; hang to dry.
