Hi guys, I'm a very new grower, so any help and advice would be highly appreciated.
I'm from the city of Durban, the hometown of this famous strain. Locally laws are just being relaxed so the growers have started. Never managed to taste a pure batch of DP, even though we should have it right on our doorstep. Buying from dealers here, no-one is certain of what they getting. That's all changing now though.
Seeds sprouted amazingly fast. soaked for 12 hours and then once they cracked I popped them into Jiffy pellets. After only 24hrs, they were above ground. No watering or any feeding the first week. just in a humidity dome.
I'm counting my days and weeks from the time I started soaking my seeds. The week started off with me placing the girls into the DWC setup, same jiffy pellets with some LECA. Started them off with just some silica and CalMag, took my solution to 180ppm. I'm using standard tap water which if I remember is around 80ppm. Girls were doing well and by the 26th Feb, day 11 for me, I added some seedling strength nutes which took my solution to around the 290ppm mark.
My temps are quite high, thinking of adding some ice packs to my res to bring down the temps. Don't have any so I need to get them first. Anybody have experience with this? How often do you add/change the packs?
This week I transferred 1 lady from each tub to their individual buckets. Started training on day 17, topped all the ladies and also cleaned up everything below. Topped to 3rd node. At the same time, which in hindsight was rather daft of me considering I had just removed quite a bit of growth, I upped the nutes. Growth still continued well, but I did get some nutrient burn on the fan leaves from the 3rd node. On day 19, started to tie the shoots down to help with the manifold as it progresses.
I definitely need to do a res change soon, starting to see a few issues, some spots and also slowed growth on some of the ladies. Problem is I can only get around to it this weekend. I have been topping up with fresh water and adjusting ph, but it still climbed to 6.2. With the next fill I will make sure the solution starts right at 5.8.
So I didn't take many pics this week, as there was not much really going on. I waited for the ladies to recover and grow out from the topping I did last week. I have 2 plants in 30 l of solution, and 2 in 14l of solution. I topped them all again, to various levels, and have been defoliating where necessary to allow the new growth some air and light. The 2 in the larger tubs I left with 6 mains, and the other 2 with 4 mains. That's per side, so 12 and 8 respectively. The last pic is 2 days after the topping and defo, nice recovery.
I'm still deciding whether to top 1 or 2 of them again, or just let them be at this level. Also have to decide when to switch over to flower, somehow I feel that 5 weeks is a bit too soon, but they seem to be ready. I'll let them grow out over the next week and then decide by Sunday.
Havent been doing anything besides my daily routine. Check pH in the evenings, adjust downward every day. Been keeping all the ladies tied down to help them spread out. Its only been 5 weeks but I'm impressed with the growth. I'm going to be switching over to flower in the next week. Although they are all Dutch Passion seeds, all Durban Poison, Very different growth. All my params are the same across the plants. ppm may vary by max 10 pts.
One plant shows very vigorous growth. The others not so much. One shows quite a bit of side branching off the mains coming off the mainline. I'll try and get a pic of that for the net week.
Hi guys,
Just a quick one regarding side branches. setup my manifold with 8 mains, but theres quite a bit of side branching occuring off these mains. Should I leave them or remove them? Beneficial or harmful to yield? More colas should mean more bud I'm guessing.
Hi @Stoned_trees. I think leaving them will be beneficial for production, they are all level, I don't see why cutting the side branches, in the future you do some defoliation. they look great. good luck mate 💪🙏👍
Didn't do much for this week except wait for the ladies to recover from defol. I am running about a week behind on my diary here. I will try and update again this week to catch up. I did switch over to flower this week, But I will start the flowering weeks from the next post.
So I will count this as the start of flower. Actually switched over a few days into week 6. Havent done much except maintain ph, defoliation and training. I did remove all side shoots of one plant, think that was a bad idea, as she took it pretty hard. The other ladies all seem to be doing well. Now we wait for buds
Switched over to flowering strenght nutes this week. Started showing the first few pistils here and there. Still just defol and training. the training has helped to keep the ladies quite short for a sativa dominant plant. waiting to see if they will stretch more or this is it. Think I may have been a bit late with the nutrient change as the one plant that was doing extremely well before seems to be slower now, and some of the tips are showing sign of burn.
Also, this plant shows some serious purple on the stem and shoots. I dont think its a cal-mag deficiency but have no idea what else it could be besides genetics.
taking things easy. 3rd week of flower. Just doing some LST and defoliation to keep things tidy and let the light through. Did manage to do res changes on all the ladies. fresh batch of nutes at standard flowering strength. seeing some nutrient burn type damage on some of the leaves. Dont think its the strength though, all the other plants seem to be doing fine.
So picking up on the last weeks problems, I couldn't find the fault. I decided to check ph using my aquarium test kit, the results were way out. It being a marine ph test kit, I wasn't happy with just that result, so I decided to get a new ph pen. Got the Bluelab ph pen and it was a massive difference. All this time my ph has been way out, amazed that the plants grew as well as they did. corrected the difference immediately. Plants seem to be doing much better overall now. Smell has started coming through now. Still quite light, but stronger than in veg.
Being in flower, it is harder to change out the res, so I have been topping up nutrients based on the differences in readings. takes me back up to the original readings I started with, or almost right there.
So I've been topping up the nutes using my percentage method. Although the ppm's are in the right range, I don't think the composition of the nutes is correct so I will be changing out the reservoirs in the next week. I did add a bloom booster that I got as a sample. Hope it helps. The only other thing I did this week was to add a trellis net to one side of the tent. The reason its only one side: I know I had ordered 10m of netting, but when I opened the packet this week, it was only the one meter.
I managed to do the res changes lae this week. Plants are looking a little better for it. I think i need to defoliate at least one more time, do you guys think its advisable, or should I just let it be. Humidity is a little on the high side, between 60-70%. I think defoliating will help with that. Its been a good run so far, don't want to mess it up with mold at the last minute.
Once again I'm late with the updates, sorry. I have not done much during this week except to top off the res and adjust pH and nutrient levels. Tried to keep them fairly constant. The ladies have been bulking up which I've been waiting for. Guestimating a harvest of hopefully 300g dry. Any others willing to hazard a guess?
I must say though, that I've still learned from this grow, there are going to be a few changes in my following grows. Small things that I can't really pinpoint right now.
So I have not been adding any nutes to my res recently. Trying to wean the girls off slowly. I don't think I'll be doing a flush, but we will have to see. They have been bulking up quite well. With me just monitoring them and not doing much else, I haven't been taking many pics. I hope the above will suffice for now. I will try and update again soon.
