Started March 14 after soaking seeds in distilled water overnight. In big Jiffy pellet, on heating mat, under dome cover.
Pic is from March 17.
Head Stash from Big Head Seeds.
One seed didn’t germinate and this one is having a hard time. Seems like peat pellet has too much nutrients for this strain. Huh.
March 28 putting the dud seed in water with a bit of soluble seaweed extract which should help get it to germinate. Not much improvement on the nutrient burned seedling.
March 31 dud seed still won’t germinate and leaves on burned seedling are very slow growing.
Starting week 3 the Triple XL are looking good compared to the Head Stash seeds that were started at the same time.
Head Stash has some roots showing and the leaves are finally starting to grow a bit. Peat pellet seemed to burn the earliest leaves like it was over fertilized so maybe coco pellets are better for germinating.
Planted jiffy pots into final container yesterday (April 6). Still seems slow growing likely mostly due to the low temperatures. But really if it doesn’t like 16C overnight indoors it’s not going to do well outdoors here in Alberta. We’ll see.
This plant finally has some leaves happening but still seems behind schedule. The only reason I can think of is that the house is too cool for this plant.
Been warm enough inside the small greenhouse to have plants out in the afternoon. Barely above zero outside but can hit 30 C easily with some direct sun. Much warmer this next week though so there should be growth spurt soon I hope.
April 20 first warm spring day. Plants were in greenhouse or direct sun this afternoon.
Warm enough all week to have plants out pretty much all day. Just need to remember to bring them back in the house at night.
I don’t think this plant likes cool weather very much, but it’s finally starting to flower in week 8. It should have a good root system by now so hopefully it gains some size here pretty quick. Today was cool so that didn’t help things.
May 7 it grew one inch today. Now 9 inches tall.
Into flowering now but still giving it ‘grow’ nutrient (I.e. more N) For a bit longer and May 14 was first dose of ‘bloom’ nutes. Using a cheap water soluble 10-40-25 Gardenpro Superbloom that worked last year for the first part of flowering.
May 17 defoliated one big fan leaf and tied it to a pepper cage as minimal LST. Staying outside overnight on warming table now.
Playing around with CO2 generation using vinegar and baking soda. Using a Red “tomato greenhouse” and during daylight hours adding CO2 using about 2g NaHCO3 in a tray and adding a few mLs of vinegar. Assuming 0.5 m3 bag this will generate about 1000 ppm CO2. Tried it yesterday and the plant was noticeably bigger today but that might just be normal growth.
Tried again today and it seems to work but may have overdone it a bit tonight as the plant is droopy. Not wilted or heat stressed or overwatered but I think possibly overwhelmed with CO2 as I may have added more than my calculated amount. My technique needs work but this CO2 addition might be worth it for special plants.
Alright overnight low now as high as 11C 🤠 springtime in Alberta
May 18: clearly co2 caused rapid growth and nutrient deficiency quickly showed up in lower leaves...will save this method for another strain.
Looks like calcium and/or magnesium deficiency likely due to fast growth and my soil mix not having enough to begin with. Dolomite lime is needed for next soil mix.
May 22: rain And cold last two days. Been using “tomato greenhouse” for protection and plant is still doing fine.
May 23: tried a calcium citrate and kelp extract as a foliar spray with a dab of dish soap as a wetting agent (surfactant). Didn’t cause any distress and the plant looks good.
May 24: it grew an inch today. Tried the CO2 shroud again. The pepper cage works well to open up bud sites to sunlight 🌞
The calcium citrate and kelp extract foliar spray seemed to help with the calcium deficiency. Foliar spray is used for cal-mag deficiency in tomatoes so I figured it would work. The best fix is preventative...dolomite lime in the soil mix, but the fast growth from CO2 addition seems to be what caused the deficiency.
May 25: grew another inch today so now 16 inches tall. Watered lightly with two calcium citrate pills (2*300 mg) and some Epsom salts in 1 L, plus 0.5 dose of grow nutes and 0.5 doses of flower nutes plus a teaspoon of molasses.
May 26: almost another inch taller today 🤠
May 27: another inch taller and more of the calmag deficiency. Adding calcium citrate and Epsom salt to water nearly every time but deficiency is still showing. Some of the leaf markings are due to spilled vinegar but most of it is calcium deficiency and that seems be due to fast growth lately.
May 30 now 18.5” tall. Using pepper frame to apply LST to keep it open to the sun.
Still adding calcium to the water, but cutting down on N and boosting P and K during flowering.
This plant is likely much faster indoors where the overnight temperatures are higher.
Jun 7: cool and rainy last couple days. Plant is inside the tomato greenhouse to keep water off the buds.
June 10: nice sunny day. Cola is starting to fill in with a few pistils starting to turn brown. Likely two or three weeks still.
June 12: cola is thickening nicely.
Getting close to the end, but it still needs a bit more time. Nowhere near as fast as advertised likely mostly due to cool nights here. Plant looks okay, a bit small overall, but not a cold tolerant plant suited for outdoor use here.
June 16: seems have matured quickly at the end but I’ll hold out for a bit more. 😎
June 17: harvested 26 g wet weight from top bud first thing this morning. This looks like about 20-25% of the total plant, so the whole yield should about 30 g dry for the whole plant. TBD.
June 19: seems to be ready for harvest based on milky trichromes.
I’ll likely take it down this weekend. I’ve decided to follow The Marijuana Growers Handbook comment that to maximize terpenes and THC you need to harvest before sunrise in the morning. 😎
Chopped early in morning on June 21 which is early for outdoor but it was started inside under lights in mid March so it took 100 days. I’m sure this plant was slow because it didn’t like low overnight temps (15-10 C). Other seedlings were better able to handle these temps (Gelato, Super Skunk, Triple XL, Chemdog) so Head Stash is not a good choice for outdoor in this climate. The early smoke is good though. The yield was also fairly small which might have improved with pruning and training but I didn’t want to slow this one down at all.
