Week 1 and the fingers crossed start to new (albeit copied) life! For the first time in like 2 years I’ve finally got the opportunity to run a side by side comparison on training techniques indoors. The mother is doing its thing beyond town limits while these two were snipped just prior to her departure.
What follows is essentially how I run clones. As you’ll expect with me - minimalist, Limited margin for error, no bullshit. It was inspired by a photo I saw entered in one of the monthlies - @butterstotch had a wicked pheno of this and I was just so impressed I had to try for myself.
This Mofo’s Steeze 👇
Step 1 - The start for any cutting from any plant is going to be a difficult one. Choose branches that are 6-8” long and looking robust and healthy. I chose 2 - one that was just so, and another that was a little on the small side. You’ll see the difference in growth rate over the next 3 weeks - about a week between them in terms of development but only five days between showing roots.
Step 2 - take the cuttings with clean scissors, preferably just below a growth node (but this is not a necessity) and immediately place the cut stems into cold water. You can use RO water and all sorts of other shit - mine came from the tap.
Step 3 - prep your starter cubes/pots (whatever kind or medium you use, the principle is the same). I use root riots which are essentially root sponges/jiffy pellets/rock wool/rapid rooters. I slice em to the center so that I can lay the stem right inside with all the rooting gel intact across the whole buried portion of the stem (very important). Trim off all but the top leaves and clip the ends of what stays as well. This will further encourage the cutting to focus on rooting vs. Leaf growth. Slice the bottom of your cutting at 45 degrees and dip the bottom of the stem into rooting gel. I’ll also split the cut end of the stem to expose more of the insides which will eventually sprout roots.
Step 4 - plant your rooting cube into the medium of your choice. In our case, were using a small Bubbleponics box made from a standard 5gal storage bin. We’re amending the net pots with clay pebbles and running a solution feed line into the bottom of the rooting cube via a small aquarium pump. This will keep the root cube moist as the cutting works on developing roots.
Step 5 - sit and wait. I don’t use a humidity dome and temps are generally 17-22 degrees with about 60% RH on average. Mist as often as you can (we use a liquid karma micro nute foliar) but Regular water about twice a day should do it. We’re hoping for roots in 7 days but will definitely settle for them in 10🤞. Any questions are welcome And thanks for stopping in👊.
Background
This one’s a multi-hybrid, 60/40 indica with an interesting cross of Blue Dream x Fire OG bx1. Scent is supposed to be berry, citrus and diesel with a couchlocky effect. Touting 24% THC. Sounds interesting enough. I’ve seen this plant before and she’s a beauty👍. Grown a bunch of Humboldts beans and their genetics have yet to let me down. Always robust and extreme terp profiles in late flower👌. This should be a good little grow.
This guy’s how-to on clones. Should also show the general differences between straight low stress training vs. A combo of lst and topping. My money is always on the biggest😉.
Week 2 - after the first 7 days on the bake, the girls were lookn pretty terrible. Leaves droopy, stems colouring. I really could’ve trimmed off a little more of the fan leaves and clipped the tips to get em focusing more on root development. But - on day 9 we start to see some signs of recovery and growth. The leaves perked up on one of em and within 24 hours of the noticeable change - boom, we have roots in the res. Noth’n do’n with the other girl though. She’s still in the window but slightly smaller than her sister and generally weaker all around.
Day 13 and after almost 2 weeks, the weaker of the 2 started lookn better and shooting out roots👍. 2 for 2 on em🤟
Again, this method isn’t overly involved.
I prefer not to use a humidity dome because of the shock factor when they get exposed to the natural environment. It may take a little longer on average but if you let em develop under typical conditions I’ve found they’re a little more vigorous. That said, the drawback is that the weaker ones that could/would survive via proper use of a humidity dome - sometimes they won’t make it.

Week 3 from the clip - really the end of week 2 of veg. As soon as the roots got a whiff of the res. These girls were on the grow rapidly. #2 is still about 5 days behind #1 but without any training or topping we could’ve likely flipped switch to flower already. But, this is the part where we get to see the rough diff between lst vs. Topping. We’ll take it another week for a little bit of that and then flip for the flower show. Alls good under the hood and in the cab peeps👍🤟😎.

Week 4 update - middle of the week, we started training and topped the largest of the 2. It was a little late on all this and could’ve started a few days ago. Either way, they’re look’n primed and we expect to flip within the next few days once she looks recovered. Runn’n em our quick to beat the mother to chop. Off to the races now🤟😎.

Week 5 update - leave it to my dumb ass to not learn from my own mistakes... I left the slightest of gaps at a tape joint around the air hoses on the smaller plant res. Fast forward 48 hours and we’ve got a significant pytheum issue setting in.... This blows fat chunks.... it also requires prompt action and is this weeks lesson in dumbassedry:
Light leaks in your res. - even the slightest of light leaks can create a pytheum problem. The roots get slimy and stringy, the water gets groty and the instruments for PH and TDS go haywire.
You have little time to remedy the problem and there is never a guarantee that you’ll salvage the plant. Root rot is the absolute worst.
BUT - if you move quick, you can often put this problem down if it’s early stage.
First, prep a new, clean res. Pre-filled and balanced, ready to rock. Cover all the god damn light leaks! Then mix 5ml hydrogen peroxide/1L in a spray bottle. I use regular, over the counter stuff (when you can find it during COVID). This spray will act as a root cleanser Before we do the res. Change out. Wear sterile gloves for this next part. When you lift the Lid out spray down the roots heavy with the peroxide spray. The solution is strong enough to sterilize the affected roots Ie. kill the rot but hopefully not burn the shit out of em. You’ll want to get in there with your hands and try to wipe off the slime where you can but the important thing is to get the roots sprayed/saturated. After that you hose the roots down and rinse them off well and get em into the new res. You want to be thorough but you also want to work with a sense of urgency. This process is going to shock the plant regardless so the less time spent out of water the better.
After 12hours and one ph correction the res. Was stable and the root tendrils have stretched back out. It’ll be touch and go for this one the next week or so but she should be alright.👍
***a note on your res. Solution***
The fix works really well if your running clean/sanitized. If you’re running hydroguard or a similar bene microb then I would suggest you run your next res. With peroxide instead (1ml/L). It’ll help kill off some of the lingering pytheum and you can roll back into your usual mix on the next change.👍
Aside from all that Bullshit - we’re flipp’n em to flower in a couple days and gonna see what happens! The other girl with healthy roots is primed to be a beast of a clone.
Week 6 update - first week or so of the stretch. As per photos, we effectively (and definitively) solved the batshit nonsense from last week with the light leak. Caught the root rot nice and early and she was back on the grow within a couple days. When you’ve had as much experience with botched hydro runs as I have, it’s always nice to be able to pull a plant back from the brink🤙👍.
They’re into the stretch now, all the ties are in place and alls to do now is wait for buds. We’ll continue to spread out the canopy over the next 3 weeks and if all goes well - we’re gonna get an early look at one of this years strongest outdoors😎.

Week 7 update - 2nd week of the stretch and she’s filling out like mad🤙🤟😎. Still no budlets just yet but should be any day. They’ll both need a big haircut pretty soon And I’m holding off until the budlets pop. Alls good under this hood. 👌

Week 8 update - 3rd week of flower and we’re now show’n some pretty and very strong budlets👌. I can’t say that either plant is a runaway winner on the other at this point. They’re both really happy and really damn thirsty too. Once the budlets started showing, we ruthlessly defo’d both of em. Didn’t spare too many of the fans either. Chopped out the sucker branches that weren’t reaching enough. The plant with straight lst has been stripped heavier and definitely has less branching. The topped plant is a giant bush and more my style😎😎😎. This really was our strongest plant of this years outdoors and the clones are demonstrating the same vigour for sure.
Here’s to hope’n for buds that are fat as hell🤞🤞🤞.

Week 9 and 4th week into flowering. Alls pretty much smooth sailing. Bud development is ok but with really long spacing so it’ll be interesting to see how much they’re able to fill out. If topping was supposed to break apical dominance on the bigger girl then that was a total fail. She’s got one massive branch stretching wayyy beyond The rest. Really happy with the maxi series nutes - simple and seemingly more stable then the botanicare liquid line. I rarely have to ph correct after res. Changeovers. Roots are super healthy too. Not as much odour as you’d hope for but we’ve still got a long way to go. Only drawback with em is how much they’re drink’n - like 2 randy sailors On a liberty pass, easily a gallon and a half each a day roughly. So far, so good - they’ll be a good run up to the harvest season around late August/early September👍.

Week 10 update - 5th week of flowering and we’re pretty much at the half way point now. A final major defo this past week just to make maintenance easier and get light deep in the canopy. Buds have also been stacking well the last week and my concerns about the excessive node spacing may be unfounded. If that’s the case, look out 😳 - these girls will be massive yielders. Only major difference between them is indeed still a marked difference in branching. The topped plant simply has more of em as expected. Well see if it translates to more bud. Kinda of a boring comparison and I thought about maybe adding in a flowering booster nute on one of em just to see a diff.... but I’m lazy as hell and the maxi series is proving both efficient and also very easy👍. Alls good in the hood - lotsa fluff, lotsa scent and if we’re lucky some massive dense buds to come😎😎😎.

Week 11 update - we’re now in to the 6th week of flowering and she’s pretty much on autopilot. Had to drop the mix a little bit after she started showing some tip burn but otherwise, no issues except a lot of scent and sticky icky👍. They’re drinkn like mad now. Not much longer to go.

Week 12 update - 7th week of flower and on straight auto pilot. RH is runn’n a little high but that’s expected in a big crowd😉. Still hard to say what they yield out to. The number’ll be good but how good will depend on how much they chunk out over the next couple weeks. Alls lookn dreamy and they’re start’n to colour up with a blueish purple hue👌. The smell is pretty overwhelming now too and the whole cabinet is packed to the walls😎. We’re dropping out the calmag supplement for the rest of the grow. Doubtful they really need much more of that at this point. These plants are definitely gonna be a quality addition👍.

Week 13 update - come’n in to the 8th week of flower and what would a grow be without some element of bullshit disaster. Changing out the res. (For the last time) and she’s got so much beef now that the net pot literally tore away from the lid🤬. The whole basket went in the drink and pebbles were floated evrywhere🤬🤬🤬🤬. Took two sets of hands to get the lid snapped back over and keep the mesh pot from take’n another dunk in the res. We had to crib the lid and mesh pot with bbq stakes to keep it from collapsing again and then taped the fuckn shit out of all of it to hold everything in place. Needless to say it was the best option we had and thankfully - we’re not much further out now. She’s straight gorgeous, stinky and dank. It’d be preferable to see them fill out a little more and we should see that over the next 10 days. Not long now yall🤙😎🤙😎.

Week 14 update - flower week 9 and we are officially on trich. watch. She’s colouring out really nicely now and definitely gett’n to the end. She’s just a straight up gorgeous pheno and I can’t wait to see how mom did in the wild👍. You can see that plant #2 is visibly a little behind on the fade. That’s probably due to the shock of last weeks batshit nonsense🤬🤬. Either way, they’re both looking great and really thickened out nicely. Not massive in terms of overall bud thickness but the density is there and we’re just pickn our spot for the chop now👍😎.

Week 15 update - into the 10th week of flowering now and trich watch is still on. Shouldn’t be Much longer on the first - she’s got mere days but the trichs aren’t quite where they need to be yet. The 2nd really did take some shock when the net pot and lid failed. She’s behind now by about a week. She is starting to colour out like #1 now but damn - that plant is just a hot mess. Half the colas are falling over, the other half are yo-yo’d to the wall, I can’t change out the res. And all the tape on the lid looks something out of an abduction scene in a movie😂. Either way, these girls are gonna yield some big weight once finished. While a 6 week veg. On a clone is somewhat unnecessary, it still yields a metric fuck ton o bud👍👍👍😎. Next update should be harvest deets - peace✌️!
Sept. 13 update - over the last couple of days #1 has turned over real nicely. Leaves are starting to crisp up and she is now done😎. We’re bring’n this girl down today while the other will def. take another few days to round out. Now to the damn trimming....
Sep. 19 update - nugs for #1 have been on the dry for 6 days now. Without the benefit of the stems they crisp up pretty quick so we’ll be jarring em today to start a slow cure. Clone #2 is still take’n it’s sweet ass time but shouldn’t be much longer.
Sept. 22 update - we took down clone #2 today. A little earlier than the other in the hopes that we can get the smoke a little racier. Initial experience with this strain Is that it’s a HEAVY indica with a massive couchlock effect. Final harvest deets to follow.

Pretty much a text book, perfect, almost no issues at all grow👌👍. We avoided certain disaster on clone #2. Late in flower the net pot failed and fell right through the lid into the res. as I was changing out the bucket. We had to think fast and the wife came up with an alternative use for our steel BBQ stakes👍😎🤔💡. We built a makeshift crib with em after pushing the net pot back through the lid. She can talk all the shit she likes about “saving the day” but I was the one who backed it up with a fuck ton of gorilla tape😉👌.
Aside from that, both clones showed incredibly well for a side by side of the differences between LST and topping. The grow gets an 8/10 for ease, maintenance and performance overall. As always, full deets are below.
Taste & Smell: 🍭🍭🍭
Effects: 🍭🍭🍭🍭
The terp. Profile so far isn’t much to write home about. We’ve got another 3 months before anything legit comes out in terms of taste. I will say however that the scent profile carries a lot more earthy kush than it does berry. This could just be the pheno here but I was really hoping that berry scent would be more pronounced. More blueberry like. 3/5 lolli’s on the scent profile.
Either way, if the goal was a high THC, couchlock effect; mission accomplished. With the munchie effect on top, this is a hard hitting indica that’ll remind you of dem high school Dayz🤟. You know... when it took 2 puffs to get blazed as shit, hit a bag o lays and pass out for a few hours.... yeah, that happened last night😃. I’m not big on sedative indicas yet we always seem to have at least one on the shelf at all times😎.
4/5 lollipops for these girls being exactly as advertised👍.
Update - fast forward a few months and the earthy kush scent remains with a little more depth of the berry👍. This one is a knockout - super sedative and great for just about anyone who needs to sleep. Not really my kinda strain personally but the rating remains regardless. This girl does what she does and does it really damn well.
Medium:
Yep - still gonna beat on the DWC drum. It just gets better and easier every run. Almost religiously changed out the res. every week and this was definitely overkill. Could’ve easily gotten away with every 10 days to 2 weeks. Stuck with peroxide this run again instead of going with bennies via hydroguard or hygrozyme. The results speak for themselves on a 6 week veg. That’s for sure. Still save’n them dolla bills on the nutes too. Minimal nute mixing (as well as simplistic regime) and for what we’re using in each res. - gotta be easily a 50-60% savings on nute consumption vs. more traditional methods. Honestly makes one wonder why organic soil grows are seemingly all the rage. I’ve found terp. Profiles, structure, plant health and of course yields to all be just that much better in straight water. What more can I say, we love our DWC.
Method 🎚️🎚️🎚️
The dueling methods were the whole point of this grow. Our best attempt to illustrate the differences between LST vs. LST/Topping ie. just how significant is the difference in terms of overall production? The truth of this test is a bit of a double edged sword. On the one hand, topping does have a significant effect on overall yield. This fact is regardless of whether or not from seed or clone. That said and when it comes to clones, you still have to be mindful of the drawbacks of further dividing (and thus reducing nug size for) main branches. Our topped clone #2 is a perfect example of this. While the structure demonstrates significantly more branching, the nug sizes are also significantly smaller. As you’ll see in the yield details it does somewhat make up for this through a higher overall weight but it was also a much less manageable plant than #1. Root mass on the topped plant was heavier and bulkier, drinking much more water than its counterpart. And in late flower half the plant was pretty much falling over. While some of this is attributable to the extremely hollow stems (and thus a carbon deficiency), making the most of the grow light proved difficult with the topped plant as bushy as it was. Basic summary - if ur cloning for profit or efficiency, stick with straight LST and grow a whole bunch of em. If I had to do it again I don’t think i would’ve bothered with topping - just for the sake of greater ease🤔🤔🤔. Then again, I’m greedy as fuck when it comes to my yields so I Could totally see myself trying to max everything out and go for broke🤙🤙. 3/5 volume bars for the rating - we accomplished what we were trying to.
Yield/Harvest🌴🌴🌴🌴
Awwwwwe yeah - down to where it counts and these girls were champs💪. While internodal spacing was longer than necessary and overall bud size was smaller than average; these plants pushed out some solid weight👍😎👍. Ran er through a 7 day dry and all jarred up on a slow cure.
Final numbers:
Total yield - clone #1: 5.14oz = 143.92g
Total yield - clone #2: 6.01oz = 168.28g
Approx. est. yield: 600g/m2 divides by 4.8, multiplied by 2 (approx. for 2/3 the cabinets sq/ft) = 250g per 0.41m2
Actual yield: 11.15oz. per 0.41m2 = 312.2g per 0.41m2.
That is some seriously good production right there😎👍😎. The high end avg. for this strain is 650g/m2. When you crush that out to my space and the numbers above, it works to about 270g per 0.41m2. Our actual yield still destroys the high end avg. by almost a zip and a half👍👍👍. The cree cob does it again. Fuck’n jazz hands y’all🙌!
With results like these you could really give the whole grow a 9/10. It’s only an 8 in my book because it’s not my preferred high. Otherwise, any time you’re north of 5+ oz. per plant, it’s a good day at the office👍👍.
Props👊👊👊
No choice but to shoutout Humboldt genetics. These beans have treated me so well and I can’t say enough Good things about the strains this organization puts out👌👍👌. Other than that, thanks to everyone who dropped by for a look and a comment. The convos always good and of course - any questions or enlightened conversation are welcome. Every time I try to take a break from documenting a grow, I end up growing something worth documenting. If your as high as I am right now, you should still be trying to figure out that last sentence.... stay lit y’all. See ya soon on the next one👊👊👊.
