Hello As soon as the plant has at least 4-6 nodes you are safe to top. Especially if the plant is healthy and vigorous. I feel like it heals better during that vegetative cycle so the sooner the better as long as you have those several sets of true leaves opened and growing.

If you have enough space, then top it regardless of being auto or not, of you want to compare an auto topped vs not topped check out my 4 strain diary in wich i top 1 auto and leave 3 not topped. P.s. i was hurting for smoke and the topped one was producing the most so i did took some branches from time to time so leave that in mind. Wedding cake was topped, gelatto wasnt, and honestly by estimates the wedding cake yielded about 15% more.

Is this an auto flower? Rather than topping have you thought of LST, topping autos have not worked well for me.
