2020 It’s on!! Finally warm enough at night to put the very first seedlings in for the season. It’s definitely early. Late August here, but I am trying to keep the soil a bit warmer by bringing in at night. I am also extending the light each night for about another 4 hours. The plan is to do this up to about 5 weeks then leave outside. They should flower out from there and my 2nd run can go in before the intense heat of summer hits. Or that’s how it’s all supposed to go anyway, will see what happens! I grew the GHS Jack last year and it was I bit shabby looking, but the tastiest bud I have tried to date so happy to go around again. 🍻

Week 2. A new jack. My first jack has not turned out the way I would have hoped so I have gone to jack 2.0 to take up the running. I have edited my diary so the weeks are correct with my new fella, hence the pause of a few weeks between updates. I will keep posting a pic or two of the original as seen above as an experiment. A few problems, mainly me having my light too close too early, resulting in bunched and small foliage. He is puny and sad, so I put him in the veggie garden to see what happens. Jack 2.0 has had a more settled upbringing. Maybe I got too excited about the new outdoor season and smothered it too much. Will transplant next week, new jack is looking much better, and much deeper in colour which I guess can only be good. Thanks for stopping by mateys 🍻

Week 3. Jack 2.0 will here on be known as,,,,, Jack. Shredding any reference to the original effort which I have shown on here for the final time before erasing him from history!! 3 weeks on and he is loving the new home and is starting to show daily changes now. I had placed some compressed worm compost in the middle of my pot and it feels like the tap roots have just made their way to this area and are enjoying the readily available food source. This year I made my own soil mix using parts of premium mix, organic mix sifted out, and home grown worm castings. I am regretting adding so much organic bag soil now, as it still seems to have too many chunks even though I sifted it, and it also has a bit of a crust on top which I hate. So today I have loosened the top soil and top dressed with a peat rich soil and a few cups of worm castings. I just found this podcast called grow from the heart and have been zeroing in on organic options. Learned so much about the benefits of worm castings and composting. To the point I am attempting my first tea brew using worm castings, molasses and coconut oil. I even bought a pump aerator. So I am really psyched about pursuing this tactic and hopefully I will learn to refine my techniques and improve my grows organically. Thanks for visiting! 🍻

Week 4. Hopefully back on track with this diary, which stalled for a while because of a dwarf seed. I needed a few weeks to catch up. It seems if you don’t update, GD think the diary is abandoned and they put a little gravestone instead of a smiley face!! So hoping to resurrect this diary from the grave..... Jack got topped last week so the vertical growth has been slow, but the new growths have come through nicely. They were quite purple for a few days there, and after doing some reading it seems my soil may have been a tad “hot” and with the worm castings too. I also fed seasol at full which seems to have been a bit much this early. Never the less, after going back to just water, the green has punched through again and Jack is on the move. Thanks for your patience on getting this one back on track. Hope it works,,,, 🍻

Week 5. Jack is growing solidly and the new tops have stretched out well. Looks lovely and healthy after the rain showers last night. So good to hear,, I don’t think is has rained here in the 5 weeks jack has been alive! I have spotted a few hairs already which is definitely earlier than I was hoping for. Was hoping to top once more and get another week or two in veg before putting the cover on to finish out. I suppose it is what it is. Will keep an eye on it for a few days before deciding whether to top once more. I did expect this, but last year they made it a little further before turning. Either way I’m happy with the way the jack is kicking along. 🍻

Week 6. Jack is away already! Buds all over him. I haven’t even needed to cover up at night, it just seems to be close enough in daylight hours to take off. Have switched the feed and shaped him a bit and he seems to be filling up a bit. Put the cage on for the next few weeks to get the ideal shape and then hopefully be able to put him away early and concentrate on the next lot, which I am hoping can go for the whole season this time. Until then jack is healthy and happy. Looking forward to seeing those awesome flame hairs in coming weeks. Thanks for visiting! 🍻

Week 7. Jack is going ok,, very healthy and happy, but a bit of a short ass. This was supposed to stretch a bit higher than fruit spirit, and may well yet but needs to get a move on. It’s nice and wide in the middle and filling up, but would like to see him get a bit taller before stacking up. I have been covering fruit spirit each night to induce flowering, but with this one I haven’t bothered and it seems to be doing well enough, However I won’t risk it revegging and will start covering or bringing it inside from next week. Thanks for visiting 🍻

Week 8. Not much change for jack this week. Buds are swelling up a bit and he has stretched a bit but not really anywhere as much as I hoped for. Looks like it might take a while to finish out given the changes from week to week are not really that impressive. I’m not convinced I did the right thing with my soil and next year i will go back to pre mix for the early season grows. 🍻

Week 9. Jack grew a bit but seems to have reached its maximum height now. This week he really put on weight. Buds went from popcorns to now joining up into lines and even getting some of that classic jack flame red hairs. I’m starting to get a real good feeling about this jack. Although short, it just takes a brush of the leaves to get that strong deep smell on the hands. Already it has loads of resin around the buds, I recognise the smell from last years grow but this one smells stronger already I reckon. A feed of worm tea this week, high went down really well. All in all it’s so far so good. Thanks for visiting 🍻

Week 10. Jack is on a real tear now. He has put on a lot of weight since last week. I love it when I move him around the yard and I can feel those buds wobbling from side to side. The smell is just unreal, and unique to the GHS jack. One thing I noticed was how quite a few of the leaves seem to curl off to the side at the ends, like a fox tail. Has anyone seen this before? I feel it may be a sign of some sort of issue, maybe something like a nutrient lockout? Due to too many worm castings possibly? If anyone knows, give me shout. Other than that it has really been a moving week for jack and I am really happy with the way he is putting weight onto those awesome buds. 🍻

Week 11. This will just about do it for jack. Enough ambers are showing up on the close up pics, so he will get the cut some time this week. Although he is short her than the one I grew last year, he is stacked! I got 48g last year and I reckon I can knock that off this time. Jack smells just unreal. It was my favourite smoke for a long time, and now this one seems to be even smellier and more dense. Hoping to reminisce with some of that unreal jack flavour in coming days.. so next update will be harvest. See you all then 🍻

This was my 2nd attempt at GHS Jack Herer. Last year I grew him for my first ever grow and did ok. The taste of Jack was a real favourite and I was hoping to recreate the experience again this year. For this grow, I am happy to give Jack a score of 7 because,,,,, Seeds - Pretty good. I bought a 5 pack and ended up with one runt. The rest were good. They germinated well and all grew at about the same rate. Grow - Again pretty good. I did not get either of them as big as I would have hoped, but I also made a few mistakes along the way. Absolutely no pest or mould issues. Jack develops real nice thick looking buds, beautiful flame red hairs and really nice smell. Topped well and handles my conditions nicely. Buds - Above average, but did not deliver the same flavour as last time. This one got me excited because it was so sticky and so nice smelling in the late stages. But once dried, the buds are yet to live up to the same flavour I got from last time. It is early in cure for sure, but the first taste was not where I expected it to be. The hit is a strong one though, and very smooth going down. Lasts a long time. So maybe it depends on the pheno that you get

For me this Jack is a tad behind my last effort in most areas. 1 gram less in yield and just not quite able to recreate that awesome taste that I got last time. Still, it hits hard and goes down nicely, so I have a jar full of some really nice buds to show for the effort. Not sure if I will grow again, given there are just so many others I want to try in the future. Thanks to all of my GD mates for following and helping along the way 🍻

I think you leave cup at certain hours and unfurl at other. And I don't think that it is too serious. Could be from varying humidity during the day. A way to check is to plug in numbers for VPD. In case you don't have it, this is the formula to indicate how fast water would evaporate : VPD = 610.78 x e^(T / (T +238.3)) x 17.2694 x (1 – RH/100)/1000 The folk lore says for vegging VPD should be 0.8–1.1 (kPa) And for flowering VPD should be 1.0–1.5 Lower VPD means its wet. Water less. If anything, get a fan or spay anti-mold. Higher VPD means its parch. Better water more often. I put this in an excel file. Realistically I can't do much to effect outdoor rain. Best thing to do for me is to grow in season like normal people would.

@Med_in_Tropic, geez med, I’m flat out putting my pants on the right way, let alone work out that formula!! I’m gonna need a few smokes beforehand for sure 😄😄 I don’t think it’s humidity as it’s been really mild so far this year, but you might be right about watering. Not sure if I am getting it spot on with jack. Still, it’s another cool looking thing that I haven’t seen before. smells great though😊👍

@Grey_Wolf,hi mate. I can but i wasnt planning on it. I planted early sept last year and they flowered out. I figure at 5 weeks we will just be over 12 hours light here and they should finish out. Your thoughts mate? Do i risk them going back into veg or hermie if i dont cover them up?? Cheers bro
