Ice Bomb Notes Week 1 I have patience problems and probably should have saved the grow space for a different project like I planned, but I’ve been dying to try growing and smoking Ice Bomb since I first started looking into what seeds I wanted to buy. I bought the seeds directly from the Bomb Seeds site back when Seedsman was overloaded with orders from my country and couldn’t take any more orders while it dealt with the backlog. I’ve actually been finding it’s cheaper to go straight to the seed producers themselves for the strains I go for, but many of them don’t throw in free seeds in their promotions or have quite the variety that large distributers like Seedsman are able to provide. Luckily for me Bomb Seeds is seriously the freakin bomb and provided me quick shipping, a few extra free seeds with purchase (I’m growing one of them now – Berry Bomb Auto; diff. journal), and I was able to get the seeds I wanted at a reduced rate since the cost of the middleman had been cut out. Their website is pretty hilarious too, but I don’t know if that was on purpose or not so I’ll hold off on talking too much about it. Ice Bomb is currently only available as a feminized photoperiod, which is actually pretty nice for my needs right now. My other photoperiods are bag seed, so I’ve got a definite appreciation for not needing to worry about gender testing or figuring out whether I want to set up a space to keep the male for pollen or toss him. Plus factoring in how long the pollen is ideally viable for, and matching that to the week that the female flower will be most receptive to the pollen. Whatever lol, it’s all much more specific than I ever expected and not necessary for this journal – so moving on. A quick rundown on this strain – she’s an indica dominant hybrid that grows short and bushy, only reaching about 3ft-4ft (about 91cm-121cm, approx.) in height. Flower is pretty average at about 7-9 weeks with a high yield, dope resin production, and moderate THC percentage in the late teens to early twenties. I’m only planning to grow one seed from this strain right now and depending on how the gender testing goes with my Ghost Train Haze seeds (different journal), I’ll probably be housing Ice Bomb in a grow tent with them since they’re close-ish in age. I’m definitely looking forward to the smell though lol, it’s supposed to smell intensely of vanilla and chocolate during flower and I’m so insanely curious to smell it for myself. 11/05 Chose one of the biggest seeds out of the five I bought from Bomb Seeds directly, and man am I excited. The seed itself is gorgeous, and I have a really good feeling about it. The outer shell looks strong, thick, and waxy – so I’m wondering if it may take a few days for the water in the paper towel to penetrate the shell and start the germination process. When I add the element of heat to seed germination it seems to happen quicker, however I’ve noticed with past germination experiments that high temp or too many fluctuations slows the taproot’s growth. I wet a paper towel with filtered water until it was soaked but not actively dripping and covered the seed with it. After that, I put the paper towel in a fresh Ziploc bag and then put that on a seed heating mat set to 72 degrees F (about 22.2 deg. C). I find the mat traps heat easily though and gets a little too toasty for my liking, so I put a folded pillowcase between the mat and the bag. I’ll leave it overnight and check on it in the morning; I’m not expecting any progress so soon but it’s always exciting to stumble on a marijuana miracle like overnight germination lol. 11/06 Alright, so after getting insanely stoned late last night I apparently decided to pull the trigger on the Ice Bomb grow I’ve been planning in the back of my head for a few weeks. Kind of fun to wake up to it all already set up though actually lol, I was really thorough and even set up my grow journal and grow space all nice; even setting up the germination process perfectly. Stoned me is amazing. Anyways lmao I woke up about nine hours later, checked in on the seed, and guys – We got the marijuana miracle lol. That shell is cracked wide open and the lil taproot is sticking out already after just a few hours! Extremely dope and a fantastic start to an already fun morning. I feel like I got a dope holiday present from myself lmao, I’m pretty tickled pink right now to be honest. Since the seed is doing well so far, I’ll probably leave it alone with the seed heating mat till the afternoon or evening before deciding when to move it to a dirt pot. I want the tap root just a little bigger first because I’m finding it’s just easier to get the seed how and where I want from the get-go when they have a larger taproot. I have terrible luck with seeds otherwise and they like to push out of the dirt instead of digging in or rotate and move in weird ways lol. 11/07 I ended up leaving the seed alone till this morning, and it’ so dope – Ice Bomb’s taproot came out like a complete champion when I checked it this morning. Anyway, I filled an approximately 1 gallon pot with Fox Farm soil that I moistened with PH’d filtered water. I fluffed up the op a bit, poked a hole in the dirt, and used a pair of tweezers to gently slide the root into the ground with the other end of the shell facing up out of the dirt. The shell was split pretty deeply and I can see the cotyledons inside the shell casing pushing out and making it look a little more swollen, so it may even shed the casing as early as tomorrow. Crazy. To keep up humidity I put a wet paper towel over the pot and popped it with some Ghost Train Haze seedlings I’ve got going under an LED full spectrum board. 11/08 Pushed off shell casing and cotyledons are a cute light green. There’s like no height on Ice Bomb though, maybe I put her under light a tad too soon. 11/09 Cotyledons are opened and the first set of secondary leaves are peeking out. No increase in height though, so I’m debating on putting her in a few extra hours of darkness tonight to get the stem a bit longer. I’m finding that if I keep the stem too short the first few set of leaves tend to brush the dirt more. Now that I’m thinking about it, I’m wondering if it might help improve airflow in the future too. 11/10 – End of Week The curling’s pretty prominent right now so I’m keeping misting light until the dirt dries out from my initial watering a bit more. The stem got a bit longer, but the secondary leaves coming in are getting bigger too so I’m not worried about Ice Bomb getting leggy yet. It could admittedly be a sign of stress from too much water, but the purpling in Ice Bomb’s leaves looks really cool. She looks gorgeous in some of the flowering photos I’ve seen, but I wouldn’t think some of that coloration would come through so soon. I’ll just keep an eye on it for now. Honestly it’s kind of fun that Ice Bomb not only germinated and sprouted so quickly, but has been powering through and launching into the veg stage so strongly too. I can’t wait to see how she grows up in the coming months too.

Ice Bomb Week 2 Notes A lot has been happening with lockdowns going into place and trying to prepare for some of the shortages and difficulties my area’s already starting to face going into winter, so I didn’t have the energy to write up notes for any of my strains this week to be honest lol. First set of secondary leaves came in this week (that first, one point set of leaves before the 3-5 pointed pair starts coming in for those who might not know), with the next set already starting to come in as well. Been rotating the pot 1-2 times a day and misting twice a day. Last week I kept the distance a little further away from the light so she could grow in a bit taller – I tend to keep seedlings on the shorter side, but since Ice Bomb isn’t going to get very tall even in flower I figured stretching her out a bit now would make care a bit easier down the road.

Ice Bomb Week 3 Notes 11/19 Been misting twice a day for the most part, but went ahead and gave the pot a proper watering so I’m going to wait a day or two before going back to misting again. Solid development so far, and no problems that I can see. Hopefully in week 3 we’ll start to see some impressive development. 11/23 Ice Bomb’s really been coming along nicely. She’s still young enough that stem thickening hasn’t really started to kick in yet, but at least for now she’s holding up under the weight of the gorgeous leaf growth coming in. It’s all pretty compact and the distance between nodes is almost non-existent lol, but since she’s supposed to be squat and bushy anyways I’m not too worried. The first set of three-tipped leaves are coming in already and with this strain the leaves seem to be a bit fatter looking than what I’ve grown so far, so it’ll be fun to see exactly how she reacts to training. Just been misting twice a day so far, but today gave her full watering.

Ice Bomb Week 4 Notes Went ahead and topped Ice Bomb earlier in the week, and was worried at first because it took a few days before I saw a sign of the new colas growing in. Now that it has though, I’m pretty excited to see how she grows out with this training method. I’ve only been successful in LST, all my fim attempts ended in failure and resulted in a single main cola growing back in. I’ve transitioned completely into watering every few days instead of misting, and doing an alternating schedule of cal/mag and veg food. Maintaining the 18/6 light schedule through veg – maybe in another month or two I’ll make the flip to flower depending on how many colas I can achieve in that time. I won’t be able to depend on stretching in flower to make her tall with her genetics leaning towards a shorty indica grow, so I’ll work to make her wide.

Ice Bomb Week 5 Notes The topping I did last week worked fantastically, and there are now two main colas on the plant. I think it's time for me to dive back into research mode and see if I can get a feel for how others trained and worked with this plant again, because it's got stocky leaves and a stocky frame going on. Super healthy and happy from what I can tell, but will probably benefit from defoliation due to how little space there is between nodes. I've been tempted to reduce the amount of light on hopes of stretching her out, but she seems really happy with what she's been getting that I don’t particularly feel like tempting fate with experimentation quite yet. Around midweek I took off two fan leaves near the top. I would normally wait a few more weeks before even thinking of defoliation because tucking leaves or doing a little LST to get them where I want has worked so well before having to do defoliating, but there's just not enough stretch in the leaf stems and branches yet to do that. Now at the end of the week, I can say the early (and minimal) defoliation of the two leaves went exactly as I'd hoped - Ice Bomb's branches are finally starting to grow and stretch out a bit more noticeably now that they have more access to light. Note: After the defoliation I also put her pot more directly in front of a fan I have going inside the tent. With the density of her growth, I suspect it'll be a good idea to give her fresh air exchange a little more focus compared to the others I have growing right now.

I decided it was time to throw in some LST for Ice Bomb and she could probably handle a transfer to a bigger pot, so I moved her into the 5 gallon size. I gave her a day to rest, then tied down each branch and cola except one tiny one at the top that had been stunted due to being completely covered by the surrounding leaves and branches. Hopefully with the new light penetration it’ll start to grow in normally And I’ll eventually be able to tie it down too. She’ll never get tall, so I’ll work on getting her sturdy enough to support plenty of topping.
