Sir, thank you for touching specifically upon this nearly mythical topic, which deserves more research! I believe partial defoliation encourages bud growth, not because of more light to the flowers, but because flowers sense when there is room to grow, and when they are surrounded by dense foliage. The flowers themselves are not capable of photosynthesis, and do not benefit from direct light, except for the comparatively small surface area of the sugar leaves stacked among them. Big fan leaves are still the ovens that bake the bread that feed the flowers - never forget that!
The under canopy should be trimmed of downward facing fan leaves and heavy growth. Upper branches should be trimmed partially, or 1:3 as CaliWill suggests, to not crowd potential bud sites.
Looking great! Nice work so far.
