Mephisto Genetics - Pink Livers (Illuminautos #48)
There's a whole bunch of hype for Mephisto trees, so I wanted to see what the fuss is about for myself! This girl is from the recent Illuminautos release, Pink Livers (Livers Back-cross x Pink Panama). Pink Panama is a beautiful looking plant, so pretty excited to see how this grows, I hope it has some of the colour from that strain, but I'll take whatever pops out!
>> EQUIPMENT <<
I keep things pretty Lo-Fi:
3 Gallon Felt pot
Bio-Bizz Light Mix
Bio-Bizz Grow
Bio-Bizz Bloom
Bio-Bizz Alg-A-Mic
Fecida CR600 125w LED
I grow in the Space Cupboard, a broom cupboard in my kitchen with the walls wrapped in survival blankets. It's small, but it's stealthy and convenient.
>> GERMINATION TIMELINE <<
01/01 - New year, new seed! Germinated 1 seed in between cotton pads soaked in a little water and closed up in a jiffy, then placed between two plates and put on the floor of my grow space to keep them warm.
02/01 - Taproot cracked after about 24 hours, popped into the soil which I pre-watered around a radius of a couple inches of the spot I planted the seed, just enough to keep it damp.
03/01 - Humidity dome in place just to keep the soil from completely drying out. Seed popped the surface this evening. Germination was roughly 48 hours from seed to sprout.
Looking forward to this one! I'll keep the humidity dome on and mist the seedling a couple times a day, just until the first serrated leaves show, then I'll remove it and continue to mist for a week or so. Here's to hoping Mephisto is as good as their rep and fingers crossed for some of those cool Pink Panama colours!
Welcome back to the Pink Livers grow! Hope you're well, it's likely a quiet one around here, first week is always a little slow...
Day 3 - @ 1"
Seed sprouted and has had decent growth without stretching at all, which is really nice. Just misting with plain water about once a day, nothing fancy going on. I took off the humidity dome yesterday.
Day 7 - @ 2"
Starting to pick up a little now, the first week is over which I always think is about the slowest for any grow aside from the final week when impatience kicks in! I've been watering with the can the last couple of days, but still only about a shot glass full of water, just enough to keep the soil damp around the stem. The seed helmet is stuck onto the stem for some reason, I can't pull it off, so just leaving it on for now, eventually it will fall aside I'd have thought.
End of the first week! Seedling is looking healthy, no ground breaking growth going on, but at least she'll start to get more interesting from here on out! Grow well!
Welcome back!
Day 10 - Height @ 3"
Nothing much to report yet for this girl, she's been a little bit of a slow starter but I'm hoping this week will see her kick on and my next update later this week will show a lot more rapid growth. She does have quite a strange structure, very wide, but nothing to be concerned about I guess. No nutrients still, just a little water every 2 days or so.
Day 13 - Height @ 3.5"
Growth is starting to kick off now! I have some concerns actually about how big she is going to get, she's so wide already! She's growing really healthy and stocky though, nice big leaves and a they're all a solid dark green. Her next water will probably be due tomorrow, so I'll introduce a low, low dose of nutrients to get her feed schedule started. But all that information will be in next weeks entry!
Thanks for stopping in, the Mephisto hype train is ready to depart for some intense vegetative growth!
Welcome back, here we go with the start of week 3!
Day 15 - Height: @ 6.5"
Day 15 and this thing is getting pretty large now, with vegetative growth hitting its stride. There's a couple of interesting things come about over the last day or so. Firstly, she's shooting off an asymmetric cluster of side branches at the first node. I've seen this before and think it will probably correct itself after the next set of side shoots. Secondly, you can't see so well in the photos, but the newest leaves have started taking on an interesting colouration, with a pink/purple hue to the tips, almost looking like petrol in water. I'm hoping this means she's going to adopt the bonkers colours of Pink Panama, but we'll see! I introduced a very low dose of grow nutrients this week, so it will be watch and learn for the next few days to make sure she responds well. Looking crazy robust and healthy though. I expect the next update in a few days is going to see her doubled in size.
Day 16
This girl is getting huge and since I have the space right now, I've decided to LST her. I haven't done this before, so it's all new for me.It will be interesting to see how it goes, but this plant looks like a beast. My plan is to drop the main stem and then begin curling it clockwise around the edge of the pot. See how that goes!
Day 20
I pruned off the large fan leaves to open up the canopy more, and have been training just to keep things level, the plant seems to be doing okay with most of the growth transferring from the main stem to all the side stems, so I guess it's doing its job!
Day 22: Height @ 6.5"
This badboy has responded super well to LST. I defoliated all of her large fan leaves and her growth has transferred from the main stem to all of the side branches, some of which have at least doubled in thickness. I've managed to create a pretty flat, even canopy, so hopefully the main messing about has been done and I'll just tie down branches as/when they need it if any start to pull up and away from the others. It's pretty amazing to me how much difference the training has made in terms of just how she looks and watching the transfer to different areas of the plant for main growth that's so different to what I'm used to when growing without any training. All healthy otherwise, seems to be responding well to nutrients and the light and growing like a champ!
Day 25: Height: @ 10"
This beast has really started spreading wide now. I've pulled some of the larger branches down further and widened up the canopy to give them room. She looks like she's finally started to show pre-flowers, which is nice because I was starting to worry she wasn't going to auto and I don't have a space to put her in for 12/12 so that's a bit of a relief. Otherwise, just feeding as usual, training her heare and there to ensure the branches all have their own space and that's about it. Looks good.
Welcome back to the Mephisto Party, we got signs of flower!
Day 29 - Height: @ 13"
This girl is finally kicking into flower and I started her on bloom nutrients for her first feed of the week. I actually think it's a bit early to go in at 2ml/l compared to what I normally do, but she is growing really strong so I don't think she'll mind at all and will hopefully thrive on them. Really interestingly, she's developed a bit of a weird mutation on two of her stems that have shot out two bud sites rather than one. It sort of looks like they have been topped, but they definitely haven't. Still I'm not going to complain! The canopy is still largely even, there was a single shoot that did go up a little more than the others, so I just pulled it back down with a tie and it's all sorted. Looking healthy!
Day 33 - Height: @ 15"
This girl keeps looking better and better! She's really healthy, eats up nutrients like they're nothing and has a really great shape from the LST. Two of the bud sites are a little lower than the others, so I'm focusing on getting them up to be an even height with the rest of the canopy right now, hopefully they'll catch up this week. She looks great though, absolute pleasure to grow! Feeding as per details, watering around every other day right now.
Grow well! x
Welcome back to the Pink Livers, moving into week 6!
Day 36 - Height: 15"
My love affair with this plant continues. She's a total gem to grow and takes training so well. She wanted to stretch out a little but I managed to reign her back in and keep her relatively narrow. Super healthy looking and has taken to the addition of bloom nutrients without a hitch. She has started drinking quite a bit now and I've noticed one or two leaves are starting to curl at the tips ever so slightly, so I'm going to start alternating Grow nutrients with plain water for a few feedings and see if that improves them, as it could be early signs of having slightly too much nitrogen available. Otherwise, easy grow, coasting along. All I want to see this week is those bud sites starting to mature a little and it'll be happy days.
Day 38 - Height: 17"
Some of the lower leaves were starting to die off and go that horrid lime and yellow colour, so I went at the lower branches with a pair of snips and did a fair bit of defoliating to open up the centre of the plant a little more and get some better air flow around the lowers. I also upped bloom nutrients in her feed to 3ml/l as I noticed some of those lower leaves had a few pale brown spots, so I think she can take a bit more. Not at all a problem as it was all those early, lower leaves that always start to go around this point in flower, so still very healthy.
Thanks for reading.
Welcome back to the Pink Livers!
Day 42 - Height: 17"
Everything coming along nicely with this plant, the buds are starting to progress nicely into decent flowers now. She seems pretty set and I don't think I'll need to bother too much with training anymore, maybe reel in some stems now and then and a little defoliation. One slightly frustrating thing, she started to show a couple of small brown spots on the leaves, very similar to the problems I've been having with the Creme Brulee grow. This is a pretty big concern, but luckily I seem to have caught it early enough. It still looks like a calcium deficiency to me and fortunately, mid last week I threw some Cal/Mag at 2ml/l into her feed just to buffer the soil a little. It's very weird though, I've never had this problem before and now twice in two grows... Makes me wonder if something has changed with my water supply. I've ordered some de-Ionized water and a PH and TDS test pen so that I can test my soil and double check to make sure things are still okay there. If anyone has any clue as to what the rust spots are, do let me know in comments, cheers!
Day 50 - Height: 17"
This girl is going along well, she has a slight deficiency thats cannibalised a couple of leaves, but no big deal really. The buds are starting to look like something worth talking about and hopefully will continue to fatten up and put on weight for the remaining 2-3 weeks before she hits the chop window. In terms of feeding and such, I've dropped the grow nutrients and been alternating adding them because I think she had a little too much N in her feed, so I'll keep on that until her leaves become a little lighter green. Overall looking good though as she moves into the latter stages of her lifecycle!
Day 53
Starting to get excited about how this girl is going to wrap up now, she's really fattening and bulking up over the last few days, so hopefully that will continue! I did some light defoliation to try and open up the middle of the canopy a little more. I'm still feeding mostly plain water right now in order to flush through some of the built up salts in the soil. PPMs in the runoff are coming down, which is good, but she's still struggling to uptake calcium by the looks of it. It should all hopefully improve by mid-next week. Either way she's pushing through well anyway and looking good, some serious frost and a really dank, skunk-y diesel smell in the room every time I walk in!
Welcome back to my Mephisto Pink Livers grow! We're nearing the finish line!
Day 56 - Height: 17"
Strolling into week 9 with this girl and she's looking fantastic! She did start to develop the same calcium issues I had with my Creme Brûlée, so I started this week with a MASSIVE flush. Using plain water I measured the PPM of the runoff until it was down to within 400 of what I was putting in and then fed a very small dose of nutrients and began feeding again as per normal, alternating plain water and nutrients. It seems to have done a great job and halted any of the necrotic spots spreading, so I guess that was a great success. In future grows I'll definitely be keeping a closer eye on PPM to ensure I'm not overfeeding and causing lockouts, which I'm pretty sure is what was happening here, as my initial PPMs were over 2000. Otherwise this week has been easy, I took off all my wire that I used to train the shape and put a few bamboo stakes in to help hold up the branches which were starting to sag under the weight of the bud, which, for the record, is dense AF! She has also started really putting out a massive stink this week, its a weird, very sour, fruity skunk smell, pungent and sticky. I think this plant is going to be something pretty special!
Day 61 - Height: 17"
Starting to fade really fast now. She's well over the calcium problems and PPMs are stable in and out (1150 IN, 1225 OUT), but her leaves are hitting that natural late flower fade, turning yellow quite rapidly. I think she's got another two weeks in her, max. Trichomes are pretty much solid milky right now, so I'm basically just letting the buds get their final weight gain and chasing those ambers. She's been a great plant, but I'm quite looking forward to harvest because she is stinking my house out pretty badly...
Thanks for reading, back next week for what will probably be one of the last updates before the chop I reckon! Grow well x
Welcome back to weeeeeeeek 10! of the Pink Livers, she's running on and on and...
Day 64 - Height: 17"
Sugar leaves are fading to yellow pretty fast now. She also grows in smell day after day, at this point stinking out my whole house and definitely the smelliest plant I've ever grown. Topping that off, it's a really skunk-y, sour diesel scent that's pretty difficult to conceal. Bit of a shame about the calcium issues from week 7-9 as some of her foliage is looking pretty ragged now, but she still paints a pretty good picture, with her buds swelling to a pretty good size. She must have at least a week left judging by the trichomes that are mostly cloudy, a few ambers here and there but way more clear still, hopefully she'll go another week and start to finish up. Feeding is dead simple now, i've cut out all N from having no grow nutrients, just a few ml/l of bloom and a bit of alg-a-mic. PPMs in/out pretty much on point, so it's just winding her down and waiting for the chop now!
This is the end... beautiful friend. Welcome back to the finale of the Pink Livers grow! She came down bang on Day 70. The trichomes were only hinting at ambers, but judging the whole plant, she was done.
>> HARVEST AND TRIM <<
Holy shiiiiiiiiii... These are the most dense, dankest nugs I've ever grown. Absolutely rock solid and full of fat calyxes. I was a bit disappointed with the wet weight, eyeing the size and weight of each bud I was expecting to break 300+ but in the end came up just shy. I expect she'll shed quite a lot of that weight, but I would hope she'll give me a good 2.5oz of dry at the end of it all. She is without a doubt the stickiest thing I've ever seen and absolutely stank during trim, even outdoing Lemon Pie which pretty much gave me a headache from the smell.
I've trimmed the whole thing pretty tight from the outset. Normally I would leave a bit more leaf on the bud for the first 2-3 days of drying at least, but the buds were so fat in places and so utterly dense that I am a little more concerned about mould that I might usually be. She's all hanging to dry now in a rack, with 50% Relative Humidity and temps around 20-22C.
>> DRY BUD REPORT <<
It took about 5 days to dry in my hanging rack, now I've put them into jars, but I'll keep the lid off for a full 24 hours, just to slow up that final part of the dry so they don't get crispy. After that they'll get the lids screwed on with 62% Boveda packs. Final weight all trimmed was 82g, ready for cure. Honestly, these buds look like straight fire. They're covered in crystals, practically crack under touch. Nice and dense and very little popcorn, probably in total only 5-10g. The rest is all in good size, stacked buds. The smell is very sour and earthy with a strong gasoline vibe, proper skunk-y. I froze the trim and ran it on a mesh screen and took 5.5g of dry sift from the discarded leaves before they hit the trash.
>> EARLY SMOKE <<
Obviously it needs a good cure to get the best, but already this is a good night time smoke. One for pain relief or insomnia by the feel of it. I'm a casual smoker really but this hits fairly hard. Good vibes though. Worth a proper cure for sure to make sure she is nice and smooth.
>> FINAL THOUGHTS <<
Overall this was a good plant to grow. Easy enough, had a few issues with Calcium in the middle and I had to do a full flush about mid-week 7, but after that was fine. Very hungry and VERY VERY smelly. If you grow this, seriously, heed the warning, this plant stank out my whole house for the last 3 weeks of life. LST was great, she took it like.a champ and grew out really nicely, overall very easy to train, since her structure was quite open anyway, so I didn't have to work too much on defoliation throughout the grow. I'll definitely grow it again, I have 4 seeds left and will definitely plant them all at some point. At teh start of the diary I mentioned that Mephisto gets a lot of hype. So do I now think they're worth the hype? Hmmm.. so-so. It was a great plant, but just from a growing perspective, nothing that unusual or special. The truth will be in the real smoke in a couple of weeks, but the buds are really good looking so I'd say they're worth growing for sure.
Thanks so much for following along. I think I'll try a few other Mephisto next as well as some Fastbuds. I have some Fastbuds testers that I want to do first probably, but then I'll be doing a Sativa dominant strain next, just for some variation. Either Mephisto Bubblegum Smile, or Fastbuds Orange Sherbert. Cheers!
