After a short recovery phase both in the grow room as well as out of it, I finally had the chance to clone out one of my new strains I'll be trying out this year! After a few setbacks, I've backed up and created myself a new system to catalogue my grows. That means I'll be able to keep daily logs and update as we go, so be sure to check back often :)
The Setup (Cloning):
When I take clones, I like to use a small amount of medium whether it's the premade soil pellets, starter trays, plugs, etc. This allows the new roots to quickly find their way to the bottom and start to prune themselves. This in turn helps to tell the plants to focus on growth rather than rooting more.
For this run (and most), I used the following:
- 6-count starter tray
- Razor blade
- Paper towel
- 70% Isopropyl
- 250ml distilled water in a short glass w/ 1tbsp H2O2
- Promix BX soil
- Promix Rooting Powder
I fill only 3 of the inserts with soil (now referred to as plugs) to allow adequate space and ventilation between the clones. It also makes it easier to remove the plugs once they are rooted without squishing the others. After sanitizing my razor with the iso/paper towel, I cut one of the lower branches off that's about 4-6 inches long (cutting close to the main stalk, but leaving a bit). I quickly remove any lower fan leaves leaving only the top 1-2 nodes. If I have time I'll usually snip the tips of the remaining leaves at this point. I then set this aside in the glass of water while I get more cuts. Once I have enough cuts I take them out of the water one by one, cutting about 1/2 inch off the bottom at an acute angle, then dip them into the rooting powder before sticking them into their own plug. Finally I saturate the homemade plugs with remainder of the H2O2 enriched water.
I kept these 3 cuts in a humidity dome, spraying them with a fine mist 2-4 times per day for the first few days with vents closed-slightly open. Towards day 6 I aim to have the vents open completely, and stop misting by day 7. When the plugs get dry, I water from the bottom by flooding the bottom of the humidity dome with a light concentration of rooting nutrients and water (just enough for the bottom of the plugs to connect and absorb it). This is usually what gives the roots a second wind, and I usually see roots coming out through the bottom within 24-48 hours.
These clones were ready in 10 days. Now, our journey begins!
Day 1:
M.C. 01-21 The first of 3 clones to show roots. Roots were starting to migrate upward. Potted to small starter pot (490ml). Promix BX amended with 30% perlite, 10% D.E. Lightly watered from bottom with SEEDLING water. Lightly misted with plain water.
M.C. 02-21 The least rooted of the 3 first clones. Some swirling on the bottom of the tray, and a few strong and healthy root not pictured. Potted to small starter pot (490ml). Promix BX amended with 30% perlite, 10% D.E. Lightly watered from bottom with SEEDLING water. The new dry soil should promote root expansion over the next few days. Lightly misted with plain water.
M.C. 03-21 Nice and healthy clone from the first set of 3. Beautiful spiral root at the bottom of the tray, and plenty of healthy off-shoots. The soil was at the perfect moisture content for potting, holding firm without excess water. Potted to small starter pot (490ml). Promix BX amended with 30% perlite, 10% D.E. Lightly watered from bottom with SEEDLING water. Lightly misted with plain water.
Day 2:
M.C. 01-21 The watering from the previous day has saturated the entire pot during the lights off period. I removed it from the tray to avoid further saturation. The plant will take 2-5 days to expand its' root system to the bottom of the pot I imagine, so there won't be much development until then.
M.C. 02-21 The pot seems heavier from the previous watering, although it looks like it did not absorb enough as I can't feel where the water begins when sticking my finger in the soil. This plant will remain on the watering tray again today. I suspect this one will be a bit longer to root out and hit the bottom, maybe up to 10 days, but still viable!
M.C. 03-21 The soil was mostly saturated with water from the previous day. Outer edges remain dry, so I did keep it on the watering tray for today as well. I can see this plant taking root in another 4-6 days I imagine.
Day 3:
M.C. 01-21 The soil has started to dry at the edge of the surface. I'm starting to notice a stretching from the tip as it pushes out a new set of leaves. This will be her 3rd node/set currently - the 2 that I left from the initial cut, plus this new developing tip. No wilting either yet, so the roots seem to be taking strong. Adding 250ml water to the tray just to keep promoting the roots to find the bottom of the pot.
M.C. 02-21 The leaves look much darker and heavier today as a result of the second watering. Crazy how noticeable watering is when they are this small. There still some light green near the base of the 3rd node as it's trying to develop it while expanding the root system. Multitasking slows both down though haha, and still nothing past the initial cut yet.
M.C. 03-21 The soil remains mostly wet, and I can see some growth on the 3rd node, and the leaves are starting to separate which is awesome to see already! I'm hoping it doesn't delay the rooting. The tips of the oldest leaves are yellowing as she drains some nutrients to support all the internal "construction".
Day 4:
M.C. 01-21 Despite watering before the dark period, the surface of the soil appears dry. I lifted the pot to weigh it, and it was definitely bottom heavy which is a good sign. The leaves are separating at the new node, with bright green fading to a darker green at the tips. I have a feeling that this one wont be far behind MC-03 for the roots to show now. Added another 250ml water to the tray.
M.C. 02-21 The leaves have brightened up as some of the over-saturation has dissipated. The leaves of the 3rd node are quite long and thinner than those of the other clones 3rd nodes. Interested to see where that leads :) I'll leave it out of the tray to make sure it doesn't suck up any additional water for now.
M.C. 03-21 She's got roots at the bottom in 4 days! I was so happy when I lifted the pot today and saw that little root poking out haha. I love when cut's go this well! The leaves from the 3rd node are continuing to separate and starting to parallel to the ground. Added 250 ml water to the tray
Day 5:
M.C. 01-21 The soil looks much better after more water came to the surface. There are still a few patches of light grey D.E./soil which I'm happy with to deter pests. The node space is much more noticeable today, and you can see the leaves drop naturally from their weight as they grow larger. Sure enough, when I lifted the pot, I saw the first root poking through the bottom! I'll let it stretch today and see how she is tomorrow.
M.C. 02-21 The soil seems to be just starting to show signs of drying on the surface. There's definitely still plenty of water though, as the pot felt heavy when I lifted it. Not much development for this clone today, so I'm hoping the changes were subteranian haha. No water today for her.
M.C. 03-21 The root at the bottom is bringing her friends for a drink haha. I'll be using this plant as my marker for when to repot if it keeps progressing like this! The leaves from the 3rd node are coming in thick and broad. The curve they do reminds me of "Pringle-mouths" haha.
Day 6:
M.C. 01-21 The leaves are becoming more broad, and I can see the start of the 4th node coming in! The soil has dried out a little as I had hoped, but the pot is still saturated with water, so I'll hold off on watering again today. Nice to see that she's gaining height already by the end of the week.
M.C. 02-21 The leaves from the 3rd node are flattening out from their initial roundedness. I can just-to-say see the starting of the 4th node which is awesome too! The soil is finally starting to dry out at the top. I'll still leave it for another day to get some air into the soil.
M.C. 03-21 The leaves have relaxed much more from their "praying hands" stature at the 3rd node, and I can see the start of the 4th coming in. Even more roots are appearing at the bottom, and I can see a few starting to turn and curl! I'd like for her to focus a bit more on the leaves though, so I'll hold on the water for her again today.
Day 7:
M.C. 01-21 The 4th node is definitely coming in nicely! The 3rd node still has some developing to do, as the base of the leaves still have their glossy new surface. If you look closely between today's and the previous days' photo, you'll see a very clear "corrugation" developing in the leaves of the new set, and they've almost doubled in size!
M.C. 02-21 One of the leaves from the 3rd node is clearly developing faster than the other, as it's almost completely out while the other is still in an infancy stage. However the 4th node is still coming in slowly. She might fall a bit behind the other two from this point, but nothing we can't fix with some training later on down the road.
M.C. 03-21 She won't listen to me now... Haha. She fell behind MC-01 a bit, but still going strong! In her defense, it MC-03 leaves seem to be coming in a bit thicker at the base which might be using more energy. The 3rd node has split completely but is still developing. The 4th node however doesn't seem to be slowed down much. Those roots at least should be doing something down there. Only time will tell!
Continuing on this week, I was able to keep the log going, however I did miss the first day or so of photos for the week as I had some other matters. As you can see, they're coming along nicely! Reminder to keep checking back for the daily log updates!
Day 8:
M.C. 01-21 The clones haven't been watered in a couple days. I added about 500ml of water to the watering tray, making sure not to over water and choke out the roots. This clone remains as one of the more vigourous clones, and is already working on spacing out the 4th set of leaves now that the roots have fully reached the bottom. I can see the start of the 5th coming in as well!
M.C. 02-21 The clones haven't been watered in a couple days. I added about 500ml of water to the watering tray, making sure not to over water and choke out the roots. This clone is still behind the other two, but doing well. I can tell that she's switching to growth, as some of the leaves are being leeched from. You can see some of the distinct discolouring on the top two leaves
M.C. 03-21 The clones haven't been watered in a couple days. I added about 500ml of water to the watering tray, making sure not to over water and choke out the roots. This clone is very close to MC-01, and it's kind of hard to tell which one is truly doing better haha. Definitely not a bad problem to have. Nice green new growth, and the leaves are maintaining the broad structure of the mother plant - even if it slowed it down a bit ;)
Day 9:
M.C. 01-21 The clones have been transferred to my new 2x4ft tent that I'll eventually transition into a flowering tent once these clones mature. The pot is wet almost to the edge, unlike some of the others in the same tray. I sneak in 1-2 hours after the dark cycle starts when I can to make sure that there was enough water for the tray, so I would attribute this to a stronger root system and thirstier plant - noted ;) The 3rd node is now completely developed, the 4th well on it's way, and the 5th is now starting to get thicker and corrugated.
M.C. 02-21 The clones have been transferred to my new 2x4ft tent that I'll eventually transition into a flowering tent once these clones mature. The soil is damp throughout, but not oversaturated. I keep checking daily on the root development at the bottom of the pot to to make sure nothing is choking or drying out.
M.C. 03-21 The clones have been transferred to my new 2x4ft tent that I'll eventually transition into a flowering tent once these clones mature. The pot is wet almost to the edge, just like MC-01. The top set of leaves are also coming in nicely! Prosper my girl.
Day 10:
M.C. 01-21 No signs of distress from the new environment so far. The MIGRO ARRAY was dimmed to about 25% when I first put them in yesterday. Today I've bumped it up 5%, which I might repeat again depending on how they react. MC-01's pot is dry on the surface now. Added 500ml water to the tray. The 5th set of leaves are out now, and about the spread while the 4th seems to just be finishing up. I think I might actually be able to stick them in their final pots in about a week and start training if they stay on this track.
M.C. 02-21 No signs of distress from the new environment so far. The MIGRO ARRAY was dimmed to about 25% when I first put them in yesterday. Today I've bumped it up 5%, which I might repeat again depending on how they react. MC-02's is almost dry, which is to be expected with the slightly smaller cut. Added 500ml water to the tray. Looks like the new set is 5-fingered, which is a great sign of health, considering the one side is still larger than the other. She's fallen behind slightly still, as the 4th leaves still haven't completely separated. The 5th node however is still poking through a bit.
M.C. 03-21 No signs of distress from the new environment so far. The MIGRO ARRAY was dimmed to about 25% when I first put them in yesterday. Today I've bumped it up 5%, which I might repeat again depending on how they react. MC-03's pot is dry on the surface, and she's still perky! I definitely think this cut will be ready for a repotting within a week as well. Added 500ml water to the tray. The 3rd node is now completely developed, and the 4th is coming in nicely! Should separate soon. I think I can see the tip of the 5th node coming in as well!
Day 11:
M.C. 01-21 Decided to take a photo of all 3 beside my favourite coffee mug for reference. As you can see, the 4th node has now flattened out and the 5th is coming in nicely. I really love the complex texture and detail that's coming through on these leaves. It's really cool to observe the differences beside other strains. The pots feel like they have sufficient water content even though the soil tops look a little dry.
M.C. 02-21 Decided to take a photo of all 3 beside my favourite coffee mug for reference. MC-02 is losing her symetrical growth, and still working on the 4th node. You can just start to see the 5th node starting, and the side branches are just starting to push out it seems at nodes 2 & 3. The pots feel like they have sufficient water content even though the soil tops look a little dry.
M.C. 03-21 Decided to take a photo of all 3 beside my favourite coffee mug for reference. You can really notice the difference and gains that MC-01 got when you compare it with this shot of MC-03. MC-03 is now a full node set behind, but still growing vigorously. The 4th set are starting to split, and revealing the 5th node coming through. The pots feel like they have sufficient water content even though the soil tops look a little dry.
Day 12:
M.C. 01-21 Today's photos were taken about an hour after lights on, they're taking a bit longer to wake up today it seems. Started to observe the tiny branches developing at each node. So cool to see the progress. Added a splash of water to the bottom of the tray to keep the roots happy that are poking out.
M.C. 02-21 The 4th node is separating more today, and no issues waking up for this girl. You can see some really nice coloured ribbing on the main stalk too - can't wait to get these girls to flower. Added a splash of water to the bottom of the tray to keep the roots happy that are poking out.
M.C. 03-21 Another sleepy girl today, but otherwise good. Nice little leaves poking out at the 2nd node. Added a splash of water to the bottom of the tray to keep the roots happy that are poking out.
Day 13:
M.C. 01-21 Pictured today about 30 mins before lights out. They seem to be maxing out about 2 ish hours before the dark period. The taller clones seem to be more affected by this than the shorter one. They look really happy with the light throughout the day cycle though, so I'll keep them in there a bit longer while I prep the mother to flower. Added 750 ml water to the tray.
M.C. 02-21 MC-02 seems to be the least affected, and tends to go to sleep closer to the lights off period but you can see in today's photo that she's still covering up quite a bit. Added 750 ml water to the tray.
M.C. 03-21 This clone seems to be going to sleep the earliest. The leaves coming out at the 2nd node have 3 fingers now, so things are clearly still developing! Added 750 ml water to the tray.
Day 14:
M.C. 01-21 Here are the girls a couple of hours after lights on, to illustrate the drastic differences haha. Looking nice and happy, and easier to see progress when they aren't groggy. MC-01 is flattening out the 5th node, with the 6th coming in. The soil is just starting to dry out on the surface. I think I'll be switching the nutrients starting next week. All 3 clones could be repotted not, but I'm waiting on a resupply of diatomaceous earth before I get those ready, as I really want to keep those gnats at bay.
M.C. 02-21 MC-02 is looking great with the 4th node out and the 5th coming in nicely. The leaves should split in the next 24-48 hours if things keep going the way the rest of the nodes went. The side branches still look good, and I think I'm noticing a slightly lighter green hue to the leaves overall, which could be telling me that theyre diverting/converting nutrients and getting ready for a spurt!
M.C. 03-21 MC-03's 4th node is flattening out and the 5th is coming in nicely - infact just starting to split as you can see. Most notably the side branches are coming along! Despite the difference in nodes, this clone is very close in height to MC-01. This pot is the most dry of the 3, however I'll hold out to see if I change the nutrient solution.
How ya doing mates?? Awesome week last week - all photos and logs have been added so be sure to check it out! This week is going great so far! I've switched to an early vegetative state nutrient system. As you'll see in the daily logs early this week, this bumps up the micro and grow nutes, and keeps the bloom at 0.6ml/gal. A quick note about last week - I'm unable to update the measurements, but please note that those nutrient amounts are measured in ml/gal, NOT ml/l.
Anyhow, this week I'm just waiting to get my order of diatomaceous earth so that I can make up another batch of soil. I'm still debating between topping this week before repotting or letting them take root in the new pots first. Decisions decisions lol. I think at the very least I'll clean up some of the lower growth to make sure the energy is being spent at the right places. I've been switching back and forth between just LST and mainlining in the past - but I think I really like the ease and cleanliness of mainlining. The draw back is the recovery time they take in the process haha.
UPDATE:
The D.E. has come in, and I repotted the girls this week. I mixed in about 1.5-2 cups D.E. for the whole pot, as well as some Bat Guano and Kelp Meal for micro and macro nutrients to use on dry cycles.
I've also included some photos of the mother plant to give an idea of what's to come! I've just started to flower it, which is the first time for this strain - so I'm pumped!
Day 15:
M.C. 01-21 After reviewing the last set of photos from last week, I figured I'd play it safe and dimmed the light back down to 25% strength. The mother plant is almost ready for flower, and I'm down some tents so she'll be taking this one over shortly. These photos were taken shortly after the lights went off, and they look quite happy! You can see some of the side branch developement in today's photo for MC-01. The pots are fairly dry now, and I've decided to move to the next stage in the nutrient regime. This kicks up the Micro and Grow nutes, while maintaining the Bloom amounts.
M.C. 02-21 A nice top photo for MC-02, you can really see the lighter green in this photo. Not to worry though, as these will darken back to a vibrant green as long as I give her what she needs shortly! The pots are fairly dry now, and I've decided to move to the next stage in the nutrient regime. This kicks up the Micro and Grow nutes, while maintaining the Bloom amounts.
M.C. 03-21 Look at that little leaf poking out from the 2nd node! Some slight yellowing you can see too, but again, not to worry. The new mix should rectify that. I've decided to move to the next stage in the nutrient regime. This kicks up the Micro and Grow nutes, while maintaining the Bloom amounts.
Day 16:
M.C. 01-21 Today is the day - for the mother! I've cleared out some space and moved plants around. So back out to the grow room these girls go! MC-01 seems much better today with the reduction in light. The 5th node is almost flattened out and the 6th coming through still. Most notably though, you can really see the work she's put into the side branches! The branches at nodes 2 and 3 are starting to produce more leaves - great sign! The new growth at the top is also a nice dark green. Added 500ml water to the tray.
M.C. 02-21 MC-02 seems to have liked the adjustment of light as well. She's got nice dark green growth at the top, and the little branches at the 2nd node seem to have a full leaf! Added 500ml water to the tray.
M.C. 03-21 The photo from today is cool, because you can see how close MC-01 & 03 are, even though there's almost a full node difference. MC-03 is stretch out a bit to compete with her sister for the light haha. She's also put some more effort into the side branches that you can see. Added 500 ml water to the tray.
Day 17:
M.C. 01-21 I figured a video would be the best way to illustrate the changes today! They've been back in the grow room under the Veg dedicated light for a day now and seem to be loving it! MC-01 has its' 5th node out, splitting the 6th node, and I can JUST see the 7th node coming in. I don't think they'll get too much more height, as you can see that the side branches are starting to stretch now! She's definitely going to be well tangled in the roots by the end of the week when I hope to repot her.
M.C. 02-21 MC-02 is doing great despite the difference in height! You'll notice the side branches stretching out at nodes 2 & 3. The pots are also still fairly wet at their center, so I'll hold off on water most likely. At least this clone will have time to root more while we wait for the supplies!
M.C. 03-21 MC-03 also has great side branching! If you take a look at the group photo from today, you'll see that both MC-01 & 03 are practically the same height, but MC-03 snuck in there by the stretch haha.
Day 18:
M.C. 01-21 My order of D.E. came in last night, perfect timing! As you can see, her roots have fully reached the bottom, and have started to migrate upwards with the water that's absorbed. The soil was a little dry for my liking, which made things a little difficult/dusty but still no mishaps! Watered around the root-zone before covering with more soil to keep the gnats down.
M.C. 02-21 Not quite as much lateral root growth as MC-01, but still plenty enough for a repotting! Her soil was a little dry as well. Ideally I should have given them a light misting from the top of the soil and let is drip down to keep the dusty bits together haha.
M.C. 03-21 Nice and thick root growth, no issues with repotting, and strong stalk. The extra spacing in the nodes may prove to be helpful during the training phase.
Day 19:
M.C. 01-21 Some nice top shots today as they slowly get acclimated to their new homes. Once I see them push out a new node, I'll probably top them. This is to make sure that they're taking to the new pot without causing any extra stress before they can take it. Today I watered them with an early veg nutrient. I like to stay cautious with nutrient boosts since they're in soil - not to mention the added nutrients from the repotting.
M.C. 02-21 Top shots for the girls today. Not much change, but also no immediate signs of shock either, so I'll take it.
M.C. 03-21 You can't really see it in this angled shot, but the small branch at the second node is coming along nicely! I think the girls are happy that they each have their own tray not haha.
Day 20:
M.C. 01-21 Definitely noticing some slow changes to the top nodes when comparing the pictures from the previous day. The leaves are slowly starting to separate, and I'm not noticing too much yellowing yet which is good. Watered with 500ml water to keep water migrating upwards to meet the roots.
M.C. 02-21 Not noticing much change in this girl today, but that's okay. She's most likely focusing on the root developement instead which I can't complain about! Watered from the bottom.
M.C. 03-21 Maybe seeing some separation in the top leaves, however more notably are the small branches at the 2nd node that you can see better here. Still a bit of stretching with them as they get longer. I might even keep them on for clones later on. Watered from the bottom.
Day 21:
M.C. 01-21 Looks like she gained some distance last night, as the top node is now above the fan leaves, unlike 2 days ago. I'm really getting eager to top them, as I don't want them to waste too much time and energy growing tissue that I'll just end up cutting off. I'll be bumping the nutrients up starting next week to keep the progress going, moving to a mid-veg stage shortly. I'm going to let things dry up tonight for a fresh boost of water tomorrow to give it a dry cycle as the pot is still a bit heavy.
M.C. 02-21 MC-02 really worked hard last night it seems, as she almost completely flatted out her top leaves! I think she's ready for a topping, but I'll let her benefit from the headstart and let the other two catch up and root before. dry cycle for her tonight as well.
M.C. 03-21 MC-03 was busy last night too and is now slowly flattening out the top node as well! Maybe tonight they'll have enough progress to go topless afterall haha. Dry cycle in prep for watering tomorrow.
I'll be updating the comment with the daily log shortly, but figured I'd get the photos and weekly overview up.
I started off this week with a topping at about the 4th node, leaving the larger fan leaves on for now. I then left then alone for a bit while I waited for the new branches at the nodes to grow out, rotating as needed. By the end of the week, they had all bushed back up with new foliage and growth.
I also included photos pf the flowering mother plant to keep up with that sneak peak. She still wasn't showing signs of flowering, so I gave her an extra 24 hours of darkness to hopefully kick start the process. As I went to go shut unplug the light source, I noticed that there was a smaller light leak from one of the vent ports, so I also made sure to close that up. At the end of the week when she started to show signs of flowering, I defoliated her to help with light penetration, as she's got massive fan leaves. You'll see in the photos that I took that opportunity to decarb the trim as well. I'm sure there's little to no THC-A, but whatever other compounds are present should make for a nice addition to some butter later on down the road. I just won't factor it in when approximating the potency of the final product.
We ended off last week with a topping at the 4th node for all 3 plants. We also decarboxylated some fan leaves to add to some butter that I made this week.
I waited until about half-way through the week before starting to tie them down, to make sure that some of the branches had stretched out a bit. I also snipped off some of the larger fan leaves to help light get to the lower branches. All 3 plants seems to be keeping a steady pace with themselves, keeping their size in relativity to each other. Now begins the process of filling the pot out to the edges before we get these girls to flower!
I went to check the mother plant at the beginning of the week, and it looks like I did end up stressing her a bit too much. There were a few pollen sacs starting to form at the internodes where the flowers were starting to form. I'll definitely take this into consideration when I take these girls to flower. I'm not concerned for these ones, as the cuts were taken well before flowering/stress was induced. I'll keep an eye on the mother plant and be sure to clean up before I send these girls to flower to avoid any fertilization.
Canna-butter: Turned out awesome, but took such a long time. I'll definitely be making more, but I'll make sure it's a large amount at a time on the next run lol.
