Watering with natural spring water?

Goldbud
Goldbudstarted grow question 5 years ago
Since I am growing with 50% coco/50% Perlite PH of water should be between 6.0 and 6.5. I hate to measure PH so I have found a very super cheap still water SASKIA which has PH of 6.2. Is that possible to grow with natural spring water? Any risk? See ingridients on the picture.

you can, for sure... but like RO water, it likely doesn't contain some of the trace elements a plant uses -- it even uses Cl-.. but not too much of course. Now, it has a lot of that stuff.. you're going to want to convert to ppm and add to what your ferts provide and make sure it isn't too high for some of that stuff. i don't have the familiarity to tell you without converting it all, lol. nowadays, i rely on spreadsheets after setting them up once, i often forget the 'how to" part due to 1-off use. I can tell you that the primary stuff with 1ppm (mg/L - 1 ppm), is mostly nothign to worry about. It's the trace elements that you have to check.. AFter a second look, i doubt you have a problem.. just depends on any potential chemical interactions with the last couple things, lol. safe to drink, so like tap, probably isn;t too far out there with S, Ca, Mg etc. if your hydroponic feed provides this stuff in a proper amount, it will be zero worries to use this water... if it depends on tap watar providing something or being in a typical range of pH that city water tends to be in, then you need to be a bit careful or at least observe how thigns go and react immediately to a hint of deficiency in this context. if you pH your mix, you can add X mL of white distilled vinegar to ph-down safely. if you measure it and add it 1mL at a time and pH it each time you can learn how much you need to add without pH'ing it the next time.. one caveat -- consistency of your water. good city water will be in a normal range of pH and will be consistent enough to trust... not all water utulities provide such a context. so, spot checking until youknow it is consistent is wise... i don't pH anymore.. i know i add ~2.5mL to 1/2 gallon of my tap to get a good pH. My ferts get me to ~6.5 everytime on their own, so i don't have to add to that. i bought a 100pack .1-resolution pH strips. I have plenty left to use only when i see problems i can't deduce the cause of due to my recent behaviour.

That would be the PH at source. It can vary slightly. But the short answer is no, you wouldn't be able to get away with not measuring PH throughout your grow. It is always essential to accurately measure your PH when growing in coco, as anything outside of 5.5-6.5 will cause the plant to be unable to uptake nutrients correctly and will starve your plant. As coco is a medium that contains 0 nutrients, you will have to provide nutrients to your plant in the water, once the first true set oof leaves appear. When mixing nutrient solutions, it is impossible to just guess the PH, even if you know the PH of the water you're mixing with, bottled water in your case. You need to mix the nutrients and then adjust the PH to the desired amount, using PH Down/Up. I would also keep an eye on EC levels, especially with using certain bottled water, as some can have an initial high EC. A basic PH meter is super cheap, and an essential bit of kit. Once you get into the habit of monitoring and adjusting PH, it's actually pretty easy. An EC reader is also essential, to make sure your nutrient solution is the correct strength for the stage of growth. Get a cheap PH meter, calibrate it and measure PH accurately. Your plants will reward you for it. I hope this helps :)

In Coco, you need to keep your pH between 5.5 and 6.0. sure you can grow with it shouldn't be an issue from what I know! Happy growing!

Sorry, never seen it was cocoa. Ph should be 5.5 to 6.5 in soiless. 5.8 ideal for veg 6 to 6.2 for flowering

A mineral analysis of the water would let you know what more or less to give. But that's only if you want to get technical. Cheers
