Hot Soil

Is it true that hot (nutrient rich, in this case organic) soil can create nutrient lockout in seedlings? Next time I should only start in jiffy pellets or similar?

Yes, my friend, this is true, if the soil is too hot it basically burns your baby up. Two ways to go about this next time with using the jiffy pellets, the plant can and will recover once it starts getting bigger and can actually intake the amount of nutrient in the soil, or you can just go with a less nutrient-rich soil like Fox Farm Happy Frog which has just enough in it, doesn't burn seedling and has enough nutrient in it for the plant to feed on for at least 3 weeks. Hopefully, I answered your question and remember Happy Growing and Free your mind one puff at a time.

Hey! I've been growing for years and never used a jiffy pellet or anything similar once.. I've always started with the paper towel method, then a 500ml cup with light mix soil. I generally use light mix from biobizz because I don´t have space to make my own soil. I think where you went wrong was maybe too hot.. Roots need warm water, not cold nor hot. just in the middle. Organic soil is the best way to go but you need to get the measurements right. Loading too much of one could over do it. These ladies have been burned from too much nutrients. I would start with a light mixed soil in the first 4 weeks, that way they grow nice without adding anything else. Then when you transplant you add them to the richer soil.. you'll avoid possible stress doing that. Hope this helped. Good luck and happy growing!

Hello, not sure about nutrient lockout during seedling stage, but those kinds of soils are too strong for seedlings. I, as a practice, do not fertilize seedlings, as a good seedling soil such as Espoma or Light Warrior provides all nutrients during the initial 2 weeks or so, before I transplant to my super soil. And even then, I do not feed until after 30 days, of veg growing. IMO, external feeding anytime before that 30 day period, just increases the chance of over feeding, before their time. Good growing!!
