How many egg shells do I need to make an effective CAL fert? Are 6 shells soaked in 500ml of water with 1tsp of vinegar enough? What about if I boiled them in plain water? What is the dosage, ratio, and minimum amount of vinegar to use for this process, so it doesn't smell

Just crush them up fine, either cooked or raw and sprinkle a small handful around the base of your plant and rake it in a bit so it is incorporated into the top layer and wont get washed off the first time you water. Egg shells are a "slow release" type of amendment, along with blood/bone meal, oyster shell "flour" etc and can not be used as a "quick fix" if you are having a calcium problem, then if so, liquid calcium supplements are the quick fix. If you are just wanting to provide a slow and steady source of calcium, the egg shells are quite effective, especially if mixed with either the blood/bone meal or oyster shell flour, or even both for a super charged additive, but mix all/any together first and give only a small handful of the mixture, not a handful of each ingredient, that would be too much and can cause brittle stems from the excess calcium. Boiling the egg shells will not "extract" the calcium from them, the calcium only comes out due to soil microbes breaking the egg shells down into a form that the plant can use and is a biological process that can not be hurried. The finer the mixture the easier it is for the microbes to break down though. Reapply a handful every 4-6 weeks throughout the growing season and stop giving it about a month before estimated harvest date, your plant will not need another "booster shot" that close to harvest, as there will be enough residual calcium in the substrate from the earlier applications. 6-10 eggshells, depending on size, and then crushed up is roughly a small handful. I have a container for egg shells that I collect throughout the year to ensure an adequate supply for any grow, otherwise if you have a few plants, you have to either like eating lots of eggs or are not concerned about wasting them. It can also be a good idea to ask your non growing friends (Mom, Dad, Gran, Aunt etc) to keep their egg shells for you, it is rather innocent and shouldn't arouse any suspicion either, just tell them you are trying a natural way of keeping snails out of your garden, which it will do incidentally, snails certainly don't like lurching through the stuff! Hope this helps, Organoman.
