Could be caterpillars, just squash them! (or throw them over the fence if you can't face squashing them!) Ocassionally plants will grow weird leaves like these for absolutely no reason at all.

Usually chunks like that are caterpillars. Most other pests will leave the leaf intact.

For one, there are lady bugs fornicating on them. That's not an issue though. The damage looks like an insect has been eating on the leaves but it looks like old damage when the leaves were just forming. If you topped the plant you may have pinched the ends off a little when the leaves were just emerging.
