HAY SMELL

newenglandgrowersstarted grow question 2 years ago
Buds smelling a bit like hay/wet grass! what's weird is that the fat main tops are "crispy" and smell sweet and fruity but the smaller buds are still wet and smell like hay. On day 13 of drying 60%rh 72°F. The bigger stems are starting to snap but the smaller ones only bend??

Drying is a weird process bro. I haven't had 1 plant dry the same. I had what you are talking about on my 3rd part harvest on my zkittlez she had 95% white pistils and when slow drying she turned 100% amber and I had what you are talking about. And it's the best weed I've dried yet. The slower the better. Another 2-3 days. If you don't wanna overdry your main cola, strip them and put the small buds in a box and start your main bud curing in the jar. But 90% of the time you get all your grow in the same window but on occasion when you have dense buds and big cola stru and you dry it right like you did, (whole) it's just the stem drying out and the lil buds your talking about I bet they are mainly in V shaped areas of the stem right? She's drying great man.

Don't worry about the smell. When you start to cure it in jars you will find the hay smell will have gone. Just don't over dry it otherwise it'll take longer to cure. You want the small stems to snap easily before jarring.

I have found that waiting for the bigger stems to snap means I have over dried and need to hydrate the flower for curing. If you have a hygrometer try putting one of your branches in an airtight container with the hygrometer for a day and see what the humidity is.

And as for the hay smell, when it fully dries out most of that smell will go, but if it's still pungent like that it has some drying left to do, probably a bit too much as it prob will be too long for the drier buds. Strip what you feel is dry and cure it. And you can either strip the small buds and throw em in a box to dry quickly or you can let em dry out for a few more days, 3-4 by guessing from my own dry, which took 7 days for 70% and 10-11 for the rest of the 55g
