LED do this even if feeding a plant well. If you have powerful LED, you should expect it to occur. Yes, p-def can cause this, but i track and log what i feed at all times. i can amp my P up with a 0-45-0 TSP without changing anything else... the purple petioles never go away, but i definitely start to get P-tox symptomes not too far above 60ppm. Since i did not change any other ppm value per molecule fed, i can be very confident of what i observed. they are worse at the top where exposed to light the most - just another sign it is related to the LED. So, becareful. don't just blindly amp up P in your mix... do it slowly and allow some times to observe plant's reaction.. if you start to see P-tox symptoms without any visible improvement on the petioles' colors, then you know it had nothing to do with the amount of P you feed. -- this is much easier to do in a soilless or hydro context, but you can do it with soil too, albeit with less resolution about the moving parts. you definitely want to try, but if all you get is a P-tox, accept that it was the wrong path taken, take a step back, and either try something else or accept it as inevitable.

One reason can be that some genetics have those kind of red characteristics. And another reason could be to much or not enough of a certain nutrient

Hey Growmie, If the plant doesn't have "purple" genetics red stems are usually early signs of a phosphorous deficiency.

Red/purple stems can mean a couple things. It can mean it's a "purp" strains (Grandaddy Purple, Purple Punch, etc.. ) or has genetics from those strains. The purps do this naturally, even when everything is perfect. It can mean that there are deficiencies, like the other user mentioned. It can also simply be a sort of "sunburn". Especially when you're using LED lights. You can usually tell if this is the case because only the topside (the part exposed to the light) will be purple or red, but the other side is green. Advice: I would not make any major changes just yet to the grow, as purple or red stems doesn't scream deficiency or problems on its own. However, it does look like your plants are ready for feeding, so if you have not fed nutrients, now is the time to do so. You will want to start feeding at half dose of your preferred veg nutrients. If you are feeding already, I would suggest adding around 50% more food (i.e. if currently 1tbsp, bump up to 1.5tbsp) and see how things fair. Cheers and happy growing -DJ Sunstone

I'm told red stems indicate a magnesium deficiency... I had not known that before and just learned it - BUT here's the thing - your plants are now at the age where they're going to be wanting some nutes so I would start them up at 1/2 strength to see how they're tolerated. You won't get the red stems to go away but there should be enough magnesium in your nutes to take care of this issue going forward. Everything else looks great - good luck!
