Also I have another question. Ive been using my tap water in my humidifier and here in norcal we have tons of minerals in our water and the ph is almost 8. with my humidifier running one and off all day could it be affecting my plants in a negative way?

nah... you aren't goingn to have ramifications from hard tap water beyond your humidifier wick (if that top) degrading sooner or just more white dust settling on things if you have the other type. use a deminarlization cartridge/tablet, if worried. pH is no concern in this context either... given common ranges of tap water. the real concern would be a dity/tainted reservoir... keep it clean or you'll blast pathogens all over the place.

A lot depends on the type of humidifier. If it's a steam type the minerals will be left behind in the dehumidifier as the steam is mostly pure water vapor. If you have a cool mist type all those minerals get blown into the air. When the water evaporates the minerals fall like microscopic snow. Eventually you might notice a white film of minerals develop. How do you know the mineral content of your water? pH is not a great indicator. Many municipal water systems treat the water specifically to raise the pH so you can have a high pH without having a crazy high mineral content. Still, there will be minerals in the water.
