it's nota controversy. Some mopes think it helps be removing anatomy responsible for light absorption, molecule production and lungs (transpiration). you simply should not defoliate with blind faith. You should only prune off in a selective way anything that might increase risk of infection. that is not 'defoliation.'
all you've done is reduce transpiration and absorption of enery. they'll recover. This can also cause prolong flower/bloom length in an unpredictable manner. It's a good way to have a longer, slower grow cycle.
"to defoliate or not..." - article on cocoforcannabis.com. read their guides and posts in dr photon's corner. avoid the regular forum posts as you should with any marijuana post - or at least read them with great skepticism. you'll avoid a lot of bro-science like 'defoliation' and light/fertilizer deprivation nonsense.
light green new growth makes me think you "boosted" P or K, as many mindlessly repeat. If you did, revert back to previous formula. This is the first sign of buildup for both molecules. if not, maybe take p/k down 5-10% without changing other nutes too much. More than one thing can cause this symptom... consider more facts before you take action. Removing leaves will also exacerbate whatever the cause is.
