I would start from the bottom, and trim any leaves that are totally being shaded by top leaves. I would remove any spindly side branches that are not part of your main cola(s).
On your main stalk(s) or cola(s), I would remove any budsites protruding from these stalks, that are not getting any sun light. I would be very careful not to remove too many upper leaves, to open your lower budsites. I would try tucking them under other leaves branches instead.
As the plant stretches, it will continue to leave leaves and little branches in the dark. Continue to trim those. I would trim right before you have to feed, so it can tolerate the defoliation better.
