The simple truth is that the vast majority of effects attributed to cannabis are various cannabinoids synergizing with CB1/2 receptors, which are then further influenced by the given profile of the strain. The terp/flav/alcohol profile can vary from strain to strain, from medium to medium, can be varied based on nutrients used/photoperiod length/stress, and on and on...
This is a long-winded way of saying that the majority of effects attributed to cannabis (like wow this strain is for focus, this makes you sleepy, wow this one was creative, etc.) is complete nonsense. Firstly, the human body (namely the endocannabinoid system) is a dynamic and complex biological system - in other words, we are each just as much entirely separate boundary value problem with sets of unique equations to solve as we are a monolith. Further distilling this, logically, there is going to be some magic strain that agrees with every person (if they can find it) while there is never going to be a strain that agrees with everyone.
Seriously. The majority of the effects discussed in archaic med/rec programs are nothing more than based off terpene studies/terpene wheels/antiquated indica/sativa perspectives. So, your budtender is essentially talking to you at the same "science" level as DoTerra essential oils. Past that, we are talking sheer coincidence or the placebo effect. 🙌
There is a REAL science to terpenes and the effect wheel sadly is not it. The best science even there is memory association (ie., I smelled an orange before and oranges remind me of spring and this cannabis reminds me of oranges and now I feel energetic). Terpenes are really unique in nature. A finite number of them in our universe, and cannabis displays just about all naturally occurring ones. For example, on the macro scale your pine terps and such associated with evergreens actually nominally increase the probability of rain locally above those forests, which is advantageous over long periods of time. Most terpenes border on between lipids and alcohols. They're fun and useful and delicious usually.
